Its not been played everytime at all, one of the big gripes about England playing at Landsdowne road was the fact that they would only play the Irish republics natonal anthem and the awful Irelands call when playing England.J wrote:dude what are you talking about its been played EVERYTIME . 27/2/2005 Ireland v England at Landsdowne Road , it was sung then .
It was also sung on 24/2/2007 at Croke Park .
No, wouldn't I have to be older than 3?lol , how old are you less than 3 ?Please don't live up to your national stereotype, we have all moved on since Bernard Manning croaked it!
Really i can gaurentee you God save the queen is played before every English rugby game anywhere. I dont miss em Im a rugby fanatic so just trust me on this.
.
I remember the BBC commentary team pointing this out and my ears pricked up 'Oh OK' not thta it bothered me or anything, it just came across as strange.
Its not debateable, arguing between two points of view, its stating fact!

The GAA is an Irish nationalist organisation; stating it is republican is too strong a term IMO.SticknMove wrote: As I understand it now isn't Croke Park a GAA ground with traditional links to republicanism,
Traditionally the GAA have not allowed any non-Gaelic sports to be played in their stadia - only recently has this rule been relaxed.

Dont start getting arsey fella, theres no need. Just cos you state it as FACT, does not make it so.

I didn't state it TT I merely asked the question without intending to cast any aspersions. But I understand your point.

If they have played 'God save the queen' at Landsdowne Road then it has been a very recent inclusion. The times I have watched England vs Ireland they have never played it and when I heard the comment (which I took to be FACT) from the BBC commentary team about God save the queen not being played at the Landsdowne road would have been round the time of the millenium.

sorry maybe i took your post the wrong way, no intonation, apologies I am calm was hoping you were too, which evidently you are.....
they were there and see quote "I was at lansdowne road and sang god save the queen two years ago"
the article itslef is to do with singing the anthem at Croke park, but if they sang it there then you can bet your bottom dollar they sang it at Lansdowne. Waht you also forget is staunch northern Irish see it as their national anthem so to not play it may well be insulting to some of their own. Are you sure that you arent getting confused with the Croke park kerfuffle Carlos?

It's been played since I can remember(which admittedly is only the early 90's) and was played before the turn of the millennium .Carlos-Wigan wrote:Whose getting arsey with you? no-one is getting arsey with you so just relax.J wrote:Carlos-Wigan wrote: Its not been played everytime at all, one of the big gripes about England playing at Landsdowne road was the fact that they would only play the Irish republics natonal anthem and the awful Irelands call when playing England.

You sure you didn't mishear what the BBC boys were saying .

Are there crossed wires here over God Save the Queen being played for the Irish team (as its N.Irelands anthem) and God save the queen being played for the English team?
Pre 1995 God save the queen was played for the Irish team along with the republics anthem, post'95 they adopted irelands call. When England play, God save the queen is ALWAYS played.

Rugby is the only major sport in Ireland in which the national team is drawn from both sides of the border. In fact, for all the talk about the propriety of playing "God Save the Queen" in Croke Park, several Irish players are Protestants from Northern Ireland who consider it their national anthem.

and that could be it Wales!

You know, I'm not an England rugby fan
they have not played God save the queen, now if they have played it regulary at Landsdowne Road prior to 2005 then I will take the comment back.
They play the Scots and Welsh national anthems (the game I watch)
and from what I have heard from the BBC and other people who know more about it than me, 'God save the queen' was never played at landsdowne road. Maybe some England rugby fan who follows the game can attest to it.

Listen fellers, I'm ready to take my comment back if I'm wrong, you learn summat new everyday an all that but I swear around the 1999-2002 period the BBC commentary team commented on 'god the save the queen'
not bing played at Landsdowne road and voila! it was not played.
It could be me getting old though...

I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick here Carlos. 'God Save The Queen' has always been played before England's games at Lansdowne Road.
However, prior to 1995, it also used to be played as the Irish anthem, when the Irish played in Belfast. However, when Ireland played in the Republic, i.e. Lansdowne Road, it was not played as the Irish national anthem.

guess i am just miserable and unpatriotic, but i'm not a big fan of the anthems at boxing fights.......being an individual sport i just don't see a fight as a battle of nations, having said that, it must be a very proud moment for a boxer.....but in the days of skyplus i just fastforward to that bit when Ian John Lewis says, 'I am the wefferwee....'
I'll admit to booing my bollox off when Kostya was entering the ring to the Aussie national anthem against Hatton, in fairness I quite like the Aussies as a nation, but I see my job as a fan is to make the venue as intimidating as possible for the opponent in the hope that it puts him off his game in some sort of way.
I would've been booing the US national anthem at Cardiff If I was there, but that would be to annoy the over-patriotic yanks than to put Manfredo off his game.
Boxing venues seem to have inherited a football type atmosphere and mentality for the BIG fights with the booing, singing and sometimes a brass band, probably due to the massive cross-over of fans.
BOOOOOO!!!

Rugby fans as a whole put the majority of others sports fans to shame.Manc_Red wrote:I hate booing but even in ireland youll get lunatics going mad if the British anthem go's up.....
Rugby fans in ireland will fully respect the British Anthem but say Footy or Boxing there will be booing left right and centre

Why did the English Rugby team change from 'Land of Hope and Glory' to ' God save our Queen'? it was only a couple of years ago they did that.
and if they are changing foir good , why not add the 4th verse when England are playing the Scots at Murrayfield Park,
Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the Queen.
that might get things going
