Right folks, went to the ulster rugby forums and put the 'national anthems
at lansdowne road' question to the people who know... Irish rugby fans an here was their responses.

My understanding was that NO visiting team anthems were played at LR. Any assuption that this was so they didn't have to play GSTQ is, of course, pure speculation. My opinion is that they should play either the Italian, French or Welsh (in that order) anthems at all matches and we could at least have a decent tune

I have attended nearly every international at Lansdowne Rd since December 1963. Missed 2 or 3.
Under the then "compromise" which started in 1955, when Ravenhill was discontinued as an international venue on the building of the (then super!!) West Stand, only the local national anthem was ever played. One of the reasons for Irelands Call coming about was that visiting teams were incensed that their anthem wasn't played and the situation had to move on.
After 1995, A na bhF was joined by IC and the visitors' anthem in the present compromise agreement. Apart from your 60 page thread recently, this has by and large worked.

no not before 1995 maybe i missed something thought he was saying never? hardly the most coherent of sentences was it.

After 1995, A na bhF was joined by IC and the visitors' anthem in the present compromise agreement. Apart from your 60 page thread recently, this has by and large worked.

A simple since 1995 would have done and what 60 page thread Carlos? biot of peoetic lcence there my son.

There's two posts, one is saying no national anthems have been played and the one below is saying that only one (the local) anthem was played till 1995 (thus the reason for the inception of 'Irelands call')

Obviously the commentary that I remember about GSTQ not being played was before 1995, I thought it was more recent. Stuff like that happens to you the older you get!

They were discussing anthems for 60 pages on the forum. I had nothing to do with it though!

Well unless I was under some kind of dream like trance drug that someone put in my guiness I sang god save the queen.

if you are telling me that no anthems are played at Lansdowne road other than the Irish I can comprehensively tell you the bloke is talking CRAP.

Why if no anthems are played for the opposing side would they have started at Croke park of all places.

Just watch the six nations this year. Ill dig the thread up again then.

Post 95 is feasible I guess.y memory aint that clever either!

if you read my post I said pre 1995 is feasible as for being a bog standard fan, yeah played since I was 6 til I was 21, had England schoolboy trials represented Exeter, Devon and the south and Southwest at under 19 level (alongside the likes of Daren Crompton recently capped and plays for Bristol) played against Steve Ojomoh and Ade Adebayo and followed rugby through my father almost from the day I was born. Go to twickenham at least once a year for internationals and or cup finals and a lifelong Bath fan. hardly bog standard.

They shouldn't play national anthems at boxing anyway, it's yet another distraction and delay before the actual fighting starts and another reason why boxing is a laughing stock of a sport these days. Mark Ratner correctly stated that UFC events are a success because they specifically avoid all the mistakes that boxing makes.

Get the fighters in the ring, an announcer calls their weight, record, and colour of trunks, and then get the fornicate on with it. (see Ali-Frazier 1 for the perfect example).
