Maybe in football, Rugby or the Olympics where the competitors have been selected to represent the country, but I really apply this in boxing. I don't think there's any obligation to support a fighter just because he's British.
True. Witter for example I have no time for

I do, I automatically support the Brit/Englishman in ANY contest, I think its treasonous not to, its a pity that Tower Of London ain't alot BIGGER else I'd have been campaigning to have all the Brits who wanted Keslser/Lacy to beat Calzaghe locked up

tbh I'd get excited if England beat Scotland in a tiddlywinks contest and I'd get annoyed if we lost :D

Ah the Welshman has more support from fellow Brits than the Danish bloke, how strange..

If Calzaghe beats Kessler after thrashing Lacy just last year, then that would make it two of his so called successors to rule the division taken care of, with just 2 fights in between. That is some achievement.

the thing is i have seen welsh scots and irish baying for england to get beat at football world cups and although this isnt boxing it still makes you slightly aggrieved  and when as i have you see scots buying argentina shirts on holiday (when the greedy twats wont even normally buy a round of drinks) it makes you think !!!!!!!!!!!!! yes i want calzaghe to win but not for the welsh just because i think he deserves it

obviously i'd prefer to see calzaghe win.

mainly cos i wanna see him and hopkins meet next year.

a calzaghe loss practically scuppers that idea for good.

Rise above the average Welsh attitude - If England lose and Scotland are still in I would look upon Scotland as the UK representative and support them - We are four countries on two islands called the UK so first of all we are English,Welsh etc but collectively we are all UK citizens - Calzaghe is a British citizen while Kessler is a Dane - If Joe was fighting an Italian in Italy would he be claiming to be more Italian than Welsh, I doubt it - Anyway its nice that Kessler is proud to be half English because most English People dont seem to be as Proud to be English as say Scots are to be Scottish - We did have pride in our nation once, we certainly did back in 1966 - Anyway if Joe does fight Froch I would definately back Joe because for various reasons I like him and it wouldnt be like backing a fighter from overseas because they are both British.

Calzaghe all the way for me.

The only time I ever WANTED to see a British fighter lose against foreign opposition in world title fights is when Hamed featured.

Come on lets say it loud "I'M ENGLISH AND I'M PROUD!!!"

Living in Wales for a couple of years made me loads more patriotic to St George.......its Great watching England beat Wales in the 5 nations (as it was then) when you're massively outnumbered    Must admit I wasn't wearing my England shirt on the night round the town though, in fact I developed a subtle Welsh accent in some pubs :D

Kessler for me.

Calzaghe has fought more crappy opponents than any top rated fighter in boxing. I don't root for him in any of his fights.

I dont get the reasoning in this :D

For a start, Joe wasn't even born in wales, he was born in England.

Furthermore, his parents are Sardinian.

So, he has no 'English Blood' in him whatsoever - and i find it ironic that he doesn't get behind Wales in their competions at Rugby or Football when they play Italy - likewise he wasn't regarded as 'welsh' when the amateur team was being selected and he nearly fought for Italy.

With regards Kessler - his mother is born and bred English. He has a brother who lives in salisbury and he comes over 2 or 3 times every year since he was born.

I cant really see how people rubbish Kessler as being part English - because he IS !

Wheras Joe neither supports the country of his birth (England) and neither cheers on the country he lives in (Wales) and almost fought for Italy as a amateur.

I just struggle to be patriotic about it all TBH as neither of them are completely British in their minds or their DNA.

Britishness is a mind set.

Genetically a horse is a horse even if it lives with cows.

No matter "the mindset" of the horse - it is a horse at the end of the day.

If we tested Joe's genes there would not be a shadow of english genes there. Joe has Sardinian genes.

For Kessler it is a different reality.

Many/most englishmen have genes that can be traced back to the vikings from when large parts of middle-england was under Viking rule.

So just for that reason chances are that the genetic similarity will be great.

Much more direct is the fact that half of Kessler's gene-pool is 100% english.

If we tested Kessler's genes there would be a lot of English influence there.

______________

If we tested a horse's genes, it would show that it was a horse with zero cow-genes. 8)

Calzaghe supports Italy in the footie(maybe he is a glory hunter?)and I guarentee if he ever did fight in Italy, he would bring up his Italin roots at every opportunity!!(remember his press conference in New York, when he tried to appeal to Italian Americans!)

All the Irish, Welsh and Scots hate us English, and always want to see us lose in any sporting event(remember that twat Andy Murray wearing a Paraguay shirt when we played them in the world cup last summer, and saying he hopes England lose...shame the middle/upper English class toffs the skinny bastard relies on at Wimbledon for support don't remember such statements...)
So I have no problem at all if any Englishman wants to see Kessler beat Calzaghe :TU:

As I said before, as a patriotic Englishman(being a Brit means nothing to me really), I don't care who wins this fight.
I just hope it's a good'un :TU:

I was just pointing out he is not wholly sardinian, he was born in the UK and his mum is british, not to mention how many years he has lived here.

ah, it was you then...

It would be a very big achievement if Joe can trounce both highly regarded rival champions. I would regard him as the #1 p4p if he can pull it off. I think he has the right style to offset Kessler but is too old, too in love with himself (I'll land 2000 punches, for example) and against a genuine equal for the first time ever.

Let's say he wins. It doesn't make all the shite years acceptable. Joe was a figure of ridicule not too long ago and it wasn't for no reason.

No, they weren't as a matter of fact.

The comparison is a redundant one. Joe fighting down to Salem, Bika, Jiminez, Starie - guys outside the top 15, in some cases not even near the top 20 - is nothing like Kessler mostly dominating guys who are genuine top 10 world class.
