Mamby Outpoints Nigerian Boxer
Saoul Mamby of Jamaica outpointed Obisia Nwankpa of Nigeria and retained his World Boxing Council junior-welterweight championship Saturday night, the News Agency of Nigeria reported today.
The 34-year-old Mamby won by a split decision in the 15-round fight, the agency said.
According to the report, Judge Dick Young of the United States scored the fight 144-143 for Mamby, Marcello Bertini of Italy had the champion winning by 145-143 and Juan Guerra listed the Nigerian on top, 146-145. The referee was Harry Gibbs of Britain.
The agency said the 29-year-old challenger, a soldier in the Nigerian army, led through the first six rounds. But he slowed in the seventh and was knocked down by two right jabs and a left cross to the face by Mamby. Nwankpa staged mild rallies in the eighth and ninth rounds, but Mamby dominated the rest of the match.
