Possible Upset?

Post by stujones »

As you are probably aware I do have regular e-mail and other forum conversations with Cory Spinks's manager - so what I'm saying might be tinged with bias.

However, did you realise that Cory goes into this fight with a 9 inch reach advantage over the Mayorga. He's reach is 5 inches greater than Forrests.

Amazingly Cory is an inch shorter than Mayorga, so he must be build like an orang-u-tan.

He fights with a style suitable to giving Mayorga some problems, however I didn't realise he had this much of a physical advantage. Perhaps he can keep Mayorga off bay all night long.

I'm still going for Ricardo, but this is definately worth the trip to William Hill's I think.

I agree. Spinks is a "sleeper" (his fights can be sleepers too  ). He's a very talented boxer. He won't make the mistake of slugging it out with Mayorga like Vernon Forrest did. I had Forrest, narrowly, winning the rematch so I certainly believe that Mayorga can be beaten.

Mayorga is relentless and punches like a bastard, but essentially he's limited and I would imagine can be outboxed. Spinks has the tools, but it's whether he can emerge from the trenches when the going inevitably gets tough. I'm not so sure he can and hence go with Mayorga to catch up with Cory late.

But, if Spinks pulled off the upset, I wouldn't be totally suprised. I'm really looking forward to this fight.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the Mayorga applecart upset at all in this one.

Despite all the great press/stories eminating from the man he is essentially a hard punching, free swinging slugger, who's awkwrd punching technique leads to many opponent's downfalls...

From what I have heard about Spinks he is a boxer who doesn't like to get involved and so should be able to resist Mayorga's calls for machismo.

Having said this, I doubt King would risk his newest gravy train in this fight unless he knew enough to feel safe that Spinks will lose.

Agreed this has the makings of a Spinks win, just when you thought Boxing had got a consistent champ in Mayorga after his wins over Lewis and Forrest (twice) he may get beaten by Spinks. If Mayorga wins then i think he should definately fight Margarito, he is the only serious challenge to Mayorga's Welterweight supremecy indeed many believe Margarito to be the best at the weight. Spinks needs to box well, Forrest could certainly argue he did enough to beat Mayorga second time round and i think Spinks needs to go that little bit extra to win as the American judges seem to favour aggression. Whether it is effective or not is beside the point with them!

Yeah Steve, I know what U mean.
A good example is that dumb ass Larry Hazard Jr. from New Jersey who surprisingly had the 115-113 for face first Harrison over Medina.

 Maybe Frank should choose 3 American judges next time.

I'm suprised you have decided to bring your clear anti-British sentiment over to the British forum Blue but welcome all the same, however i doubt you will be able to say some of the things over here you got away with on the current scene. I was referring to Shane Mosley's supposed aggression against Oscar De La Hoya which won no points for me seen as he didn't do anything, the same happened in the later rounds of Forrest-Mayorga II when Forrest's better Boxing should have been winning points but Mayorga's rather unaffective macho aggresion got the votes. Tarver and Jones on the other hand had a guy clearly forcing the fight and coming forward and although he was not exactly doing a lot of scoring the none-aggressor got the decision, where's the consistency.

Dear Mr 6 ate 9,
(Very creative user name.)
There are British judges & there are American judges.
Some favor aggression, 8)
some favor (cough) ring generalship.
Some favor promoters.
U can’t put them all in the same box.

The clear anti-sentiment statement is in your post. :o

While we agree on Mosley-Oscar De La Hoya,
Forrest fought too scared & too late to earn the decision from Mayorga.
U contradicted yourself about American judges in your comment on the Tarver-Jones fight.

FWIW,
I have blood from Ireland & Wales on my Father’s side.

Anybody who wants to waste some time can do a Forum search and see your accusation of me having anti-British sentiment; nothing but a red herring.
But They can find Anti-American sentiments made by U. :-?

Just drop the herd mentality & stick to discussing boxing.

I have no herd mentality, but everytime you post your Brit bashing! It's like you follow me around, how many times have we had this "discussion"? Everytime there is something being said about Calzaghe, Hatton, Eastman and it's deregotory you always seem to appear, i'd stick a stake through your heart man but i don't think i could kill you!  Plus you got involved in this thread with a allegedly jibe, and that's just the final straw

Hey, U are the one bashing with your generalization of American judges.
I have been mostly lurking and only posting when I feel I have something useful to contribute on this British Forum since its beginning.
I have had no complaints until U showed up with your personal attack.

It's like you follow me around, how many times have we had this "discussion"?

I follow U? Yeah right!
What did I say to have U attack me a couple days ago without reason in the thread… :o

Just ignore him Grey, don't rise to the bait, if you ignore them they tend to go away. Sugar Roy Robinson did, Blue's still here though.  :P

At the time I took it as a good natured jab.
So I ignored it.

Everytime there is something being said about Calzaghe, Hatton, Eastman and it's deregotory you always seem to appear,

This is a boxing forum for opinions isn’t it? 8)
Where can U say I have made personal attacks or slagged their abilities without reason?

i'd stick a stake through your heart man but i don't think i could kill you!

So U hate someone you don’t know, because they don’t agree with U? :o

Plus you got involved in this thread with a allegedly jibe, and that's just the final straw

The allegedly jibe was a good natured counter for your previous aforementioned jab.
So what you’re also saying is that every time U criticize Donkey King, or Jose Sillyman U r American bashing?

U are trying to paint a negative picture of me through negative & repetitive propaganda that is not related to boxing. U should defend your arguments with substance instead of slogans. :-?

Have U heard of a "punchers chance"?
Only if Spinks gets Judges who favor “Ring Generalship” will he have a “runner’s chance”.

Mayorga's whole appeal is that of imminent disaster, in the ring, out of the ring - whatever.

I have never seen Spinks but I did read that Don King has hired Manny Stewrad to work with Mayorga for this fight, which would seem to confirn your fears are shared by El Matador's Promoter.

I like Mayorga and hope he goes on to be the biggest name in the sport - Which I think he will do as the rest are dropping like flies:

DeLaHoya - fading - and 2 fights from retirement
Mosley - peaked.
Forrest - same - no appeal anyway - even though Roger Mayweather rates him as the most naturally gifted Boxer he's ever worked with INC his Nephew!
Jones Jr - tarnished after Tarver, ripe for defeat at Lt Heavy (C'mon Joe) - 1 fight from retirement.
Barrera - could be finished, looked it at times in his last fight.
Floyd Mayweather - one exciting performance in his last 4 fights and likely to be EVEN LESS explosive and exciting if he continues to move up.
No Heavyweights of interest past the Klitty boys and they aren't much anyway.
Naseem - Last seen at KFC saying "look out Hatton, you are next - if Allah wills it".

The more I read about mayorga the more I like him - he threatened to "staple some nuts to you so people don't think you are a girl" or some such to Spinks - which you have to love!

Mayorga v Mosley is one heck of a match up, I hope it happens. Sugar Shane looked so strong against De La Hoya, don't bet on him giving too much ground to the wild swinging welterweight.

Steve man don't give up so easily.... :(

Blue is very articulate and accurate in his defence of the accusation of brit bashing...however he has also mastered the art of covering his arse..

Of course he can reel off previous comments made by himself and you but it's the undertone and hidden meanings that stick in our minds...you know the stuff that can't be used in evidence...

I think I and allot of the Brits know where Blue's opinions lie, even if he chooses to turn his defence into attacking you.

P.S. Hope your listening Blue, and make sure you keep this thread to serve up in your defence next time some rude brit accuses you of brit bashing.... :D

The key to beating Mayorga it seems is all in the mental side of it. Mayorga has some skills, but he's no Pernell Whittaker, and he acheived success against Andrew Lewis and Vernon Forrest through his intimidation. He's a mauler, but a very effective one. You only have to look at the face of Forrest in both fights, he didn't have a clue what kind of animal he was fighting in there. He wasn't prepared mentally for someone like Mayorga, someone who was raised hard, and just doesn't give. Forrest was beat both times before he even stepped through the ropes.

If Spinks can get over Mayorga's wildman antics, not get drawn into the Nicaraguan's games, he can have some success with his boxing skills and astonishing reach advantage. Spinks must have some mental toughness to fight over in Italy and come away with some kind of result. NOt enough toughness for me though, Mayorga is a nutter, but he's a good nutter who can fight.
