Homosexual boxers
Homosexual boxers
According to Thomas Hauser's book, "The Black Lights" which was published in 1985, there had up until then been seven world champions who were gay.
I've heard from what I consider reliable sources that Emile Griffith and Don Curry were/are gay, does anyone know whom the rest might be?

Re: Homosexual boxers
You'll hear rumours of Freddie Mills being gay, but that's all they are, rumours. Lennox Lewis is another accused of being gay, when he recently got married.Alister wrote:According to Thomas Hauser's book, "The Black Lights" which was published in 1985, there had up until then been seven world champions who were gay.

Lewis is married! When, I knew he had a girlfriend - but didn't know he tied the knot.
Where was my invite!
The Freddie Mills rumours were very strong indeed. Its been cited as fact in a few books I have read about him. Of course, we'll never know.
Tyson is another fighter that I have heard "plays for both sides" if you like, but again merely rumours.

You mean the fight where Griffith was so incensed at Paret calling him a "maricon" that he beat him to death? That seem like a bit of an overreaction to anyone else?Holyfield Headbutt wrote:Emile Griffith is straight. The rumors of him being homo were based on Benny Paret questioning his heterosexuality at the weigh-in of one of their fights. The rumors were built on that.
The BoxRec note added to the record of that fight is interesting:
Paret slipped into a coma and died ten days later of injuries sustained during this bout, which was the first ring death seen by millions on American national television on the then popular Friday Night Fights show.
Boy, I'll bet a lot of parents were less than thrilled to have their kids watch Griffith beat the life out of the helpless Paret. Howie Sirota of BoxingRanks.com describes the scene:
Does any of our esteemed older colleagues know what (if any) the repercussions of the Paret death were for FNF?I was twelve years old when, on TV, I and millions of viewers watched in horror and disbelief as referee Ruby Goldstein, apparently frozen, failed to stop the fight with Benny "Kid" Paret as Paret, stuck on the ropes, absorbed at least twenty clean flush head shots before the ref intervened at long last. Paret slid down to the canvas in an unnaturally flexible, almost melting motion that I knew he was dead before he had finished falling.

Remember the classsic line Haugen threw out before one of his wars with Pazienza, about one of Paz' buddies supposedly wearing a ponytail so Paz would "have something to hang on to while he was f***ing him in the a**"? I don't remember Haugen's exact words (and can't seem to find the actual quote anywhere), but that was the gist of it.The_Wild_Man wrote:Every fighter whoever fought Greg Haugen was gay (well except Hector "Macho" Camacho) he said so himself
Since Macho had that little ponytail above his forehead, wonder what Greg would've made of that? Maybe that Cmacho was gay, too, but that at least he was upfront about it.

Actually there are a few, lets say "suspicious" photos floating around of old macho man himself that makes one wonder if he didnt enjoying a little back door action now and then.Eric the Viking wrote: Since Macho had that little ponytail above his forehead, wonder what Greg would've made of that? Not that I would ever seek out such photos mind you

I don't care if it matters or not, I think it's an interesting question - I mean the majority of people in this world would be absolutely amazed if a world boxing champ "Came Out".
It's just completely against the gay stereo type isn't it? Ballet dancer yes, but boxer?!!
But even in this "enlightened age" it's very unlikely a world champ would admitt he's gay - it's never happend in the history of the sport I think..
For what it's worth I always thought Don Curry probably was - and there was a heavyweight champ in the 80's who was gay too - not sure who though.
Tommy Hearns never got married did he?

So was said about 1930s Bantamweight Champion Panama Al Brown by the 1998 Frenchlanguage-book written by Spaniard Eduardo Arroyo, entitled "'Panama' Al Brown 1902-1951."
Brown's record, per research by BoxRec Editors:

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that Emile Griffith is gay. Paret made those comments because even at that time it was an open secret. Also, I seem to remember in Rubin Carter's bio that Hurricane also used the gay-baiting tactic against Emile, but in that case it worked - Carter KO'd an incautious Griffith in rd. 1.
I had also heard about Don Curry and as an above post mentions there was a heavyweight in the 80s (Snipes?). And, to add further innuendo, I've heard talk about Cus D'Amato and Jim Jacobs!
But, the most bent individual in all boxing has to be Don King - he screwed every fighter who ever got near him!

Does it follow that every favorite who gets upset by a knockout is a homosexual.....sounds VERY logical to me..Tantum wrote:Lennox Lewis is not "suspiciously" gay at all. He's gay, period.
I really don't care, it doesn't affect my opinion of him, in fact I think that it's cool that the Heavyweight champion is gay. Too bad he didn't come out years ago.
Just watch McCall 1, and Rahman 1 for the proof...
No you dork-on.
Watch after he gets KO'd... Both times his lover comes into the ring, and hugs/caresses him... Proof enough for me. His homosexuality doesn't bother me, and shouldn't bother anyone. But like I said... I'm curious why he hides it, and if there was a time to come out, it was years ago.

tantum you master of spotting homosexuals, the 'lover' who hugs lennox is his conditioner courtney shand, who has known him since childhood in canada. theyare a close family the whole lewis camp and how many millions of times have we seen a loser getting hugged by a friend?
not only is he married, if you venture into the murky depths of the british fourm you will find a poster who's grandma was NEIGHBORS with lennox in the late 80s, and used tobe kept awake by him shagging girls all night.
what is happening is that you are blindly following the american press like a simpleton who in their infinite wisodom see a man over the age of 30 unmarried and assume he must be gay- brilliant!
whats all this stuff about don curry? ive seen him box, dont know if ive seen him talk? is he camp or something? whats the reasoning behind so many people bringing up curry?
finally, cant see any of those 80s champs being gay- all of them very straight and manly and tough. but someone fascinated me by saying snipes- why? i've occassionally seen things in snipes that made me wonder too.

Don't think it was Snipes, he wasn't a champ and I was told he was a title holder...no idea who to be honest.overhand_right wrote:tantum you master of spotting homosexuals, the 'lover' who hugs lennox is his conditioner courtney shand, who has known him since childhood in canada. theyare a close family the whole lewis camp and how many millions of times have we seen a loser getting hugged by a friend?

Curry was slightly effeminate in the way he talked ( bit like Tyson come to think of it! ) and I guess as he never appeared with a girlfriend it seemed probable...he's never written a Bio as far as I know - maybe he will one day, as he had a helluva career while it lasted.
IMO Lewis is not gay - just likes to keep his girlfirends out of the limelight - on one occasion he wouldn't let his ladyfriend be photographed by the UK press, while in Canada - and the rumours were that she was his mistress, and he didn't want the photos getting back to his longtime girlfriend.
