Calzaghe - Hopkins would be a joke..

Post by Greg Nicholas »

We all know they're fighting in New York in Feb, but a 36 yr old against a 43 yr old (thats how old they'll be)..? How pathetic can you get..

Joe's promoter should have had the ability to get that fight on 7, 8 yrs earlier.. also, Calzaghe taking 15 yrs to get to the states is taking the biscuit.. Why couldn't he just went over there 5, 10 yrs ago..? This Hopkins fight after this next defence really makes him and his promoter look even more like jokes who basically just wasted decades waiting and bitching..

Calzaghe's a classic 90s champion. Spend your prime making as many average title defenses as possible, miss the biggest fights until you're getting on a bit. Jones and Hopkins were like that as well. Boxing doesn't really accomodate that attitude as much these days. Spend as much time not risking what you have.

Hopkins ducked the smackdown he would of got In 2001 when they tried to make a Hopkins fight.

Hopkins Is a pain In the arse to deal with too.

Howcome you didn't complain when Wright at 35 fought Hopkins at 42? Are you looking for excuses to hate on the worlds best boxer?

Max I am getting very worried about you. It is one thing to be a fan of a particular fighter but you appear to be almost obsessive about Calzaghe.

You need a some therapy sunshine or a good surgeon to remove you from JC's constricting nutbag. :TU:

But it's okay for Hatton to build up a £10M fortune before taking a risk is it?

Sorry but that's a flawed argument. European boxers need to go to the boxing capital to justify their claims. Americans don't need to travel.

No they don't. They just have to beat the best guys in their division wherever, and whenever, they can.

I don't see why that's pathetic, they're still probably the best 2 around 168-175 IMO

Lets see Calazage get past Kessler first, which will be a tough ask. I wonder if BHOPs will be as keen on the lesser known Kessler

I would favour Calzaghe to beat Hopkins at this stage of their careers, but no way would B-Hop ever receive a smackdown from any fighter.

You make sound like Calzghe would completely dominate Hopkins, which would not be the scenario.

I think there's quite a few 175 lbers who might beat Nard at this stage, which is why he's facing the likes of Winky Wright instead.

Calzaghe is the goods at 168, at least until he faces Kessler.

Point I'm getting is that Calzaghe, Hopkins etc followed a clear pattern and that they cashed in with big fights, rather than proving themselves in their primes with big fights.

Hatton's extended WBU/Manchester reign went on way too far, but at least he gunned for the #1 guy in his division, and in his last fight beat down Ring Mag's #2 at 140.

Anyway, the WBU doesn't count as a world title. Were these fights advertised as "world title fights" i wonder?

I wouldn't take the Ring's rating too seriously....I mean, how could anyone have Castillo at #1 at 140, he'd only had one serious fight at 140 prior to Hatton, and very nearly got beaten by an unheralded African fighter.

Lol, I think Calzaghe should of had a better resume but thats all In the past It seems as last year Lacy, this year Kessler and hopefully another good one after wards.

I rate Calzaghe highly though, not seen any British fighter that good regardless of opposition.

One thing I was reminded off Is Kessler's right hand needs to be a single shot to land on Calzaghe like Bika's did otherwise he won't touch him with rights.

Other than Mayweather, theres no one currently near as talented but even Mayweather hates a battle and just pot shot and boxes with fast hands.

I prefer boxers with skill over guys who want to fight like Gatti or Mexicans except ones like the Marquez's like Hatton does.

Fair dues Max.

I agree JC is a very talented fighter. It’s, of course, a real shame he hasn’t got bigger names on that resume of his as opposed to decent middling opposition. It would have really put his career into perspective. But I am looking forward to the Kessler fight and a win would definitely secure a legacy.

I like all styles myself but have a preference for fighters that go after the big fights against the very best opposition. That's why I have a preference for the lighter guys at BW to SFW nowadays. Elite level guys going at it time and again. :TU:

I did think the review on Hopkins vs Wright in Boxing Monthly was OTT... I couldn't understand why that performance and that victory cemented Hopkins more so than his previous wins. I also thought Hopkins looked sloppy at times and clearly looked a bit shot.

Having said that, Calzaghe vs Hopkins is still intriguing... but now only intriguing - back in 2000 / 2001 it would have been a hard ask for Joe IMO.
