Eder Jofre how good was he?
Iv'e never seen this guy fight but from what iv'e heard through sources and online he was an amazing fighter who had it all, KO power in both fists, iron chin, great speed and refelxes and amazing satmina.
I encountered an article on him online where a writer considered him to be arguably the second greatest fighter of all time, the writer said "he was the equal of Ray robinson" now thats high praises, but unforutnatley he didn't fight much in the U.S so many believe he doesn't get the credit he deserves, I have a fight of his on the way agianst Jose Medel it will be the first time i see Jofre in action i am very anxious to see what few experts have been talking about.
Does anyone have any info on this forgetten champ?

Jofre was definately an all time great... the comparison to Robinson is interesting as Jofre like Robinson was a boxer with classic skills who was also a great puncher. Jofre won the nba version of the world bantam title in '59 then undisputed recognition in '60 and reigned as champ till '65 ....he made 7 successful defences (including one against Joe Medal... an excellent fighter) before losing his title on points to Fighting Harada... now Fighting Harada in my mind is a dreadfully overlooked all time great... anyway Harada then beat Jofre again in '66 again on points... I have both fights and they are thrillers and basically Harada just steam rolls Jofre...doesn't let him settle... both fights are close but Harada is clear winner. Anyway after 2nd loss to Harada Jofre retired in '66 but then came back in '69 as a Featherweight and now 33.... after running up a good string of wins Jofre beat Jose Legre for the world Feather title in 1973 (at age of 37!) he then defended it once against former champ Vincent Saldavar ...then for reason I don't know he relinquished title ('74 I think) but fought on in ring til 1976 when he was 40.... he won all last fights.... infact Fighting Harada was only man ever to beat Jofre!.... which says a lot about both fighters!.... in 72 wins Jofre scored 50 koes.... 22 points wins and had 4 draws.... I love these little fighters... damn shame people often don't look further than the heavies or Middles.... these men were real skilled warriors
I just watched both fights again, great matches!.... anyway Harada clearly won the first (10 rounds to 5 in my opinion) and the second is a little closer at 9 rounds to 6 (again my personal scoring) ... both fights follow simular patterns with Harada bustling forward and swarming over Jofre and Jofre trying to out box Harada.... the thing that really gave Harada the edge was his extra hand speed... he often was hitting Jofre 3 punches to every one punch Jofre landed. Having said that both fights are always competitive and exciting... Jofre often lands some great shots but Harada had a great chin and just walks through the punches. Also Harada often outboxes Jofre... landing triple jabs... although Harada is always described as a slugger who through punches non-stop he was really a very versitile box-fighter able to box at a distance when he wants. In both fights with Jofre Harada switches between coming forward swarming and boxing at a distance.... the key to his wins is the fact that he never lets Jofre settle enough to take control.
Harada should have been a 3 weight champion... in '69 he fought Johnney Famechon for the world Fether title and in great fight floored Famechon 3 times but was robbed when the ref (who was Willie Pep) gave the verdict to Famechon.... even the home crowd (the fight was in Famechons backyard of Austrailia) booed the verdict!..... they met again and this time Famechon koed Harada in the 14th.....

A bit more info on Jofre if you like, ....Edre's mother was a proffessional wreastler!.... after he retired Jofre became a politition in his native Brazil, working to improve the plight of the poor... During his boxing career Jofre was advised by many to base himself in America but chose to stay in Brazil.... he was also the first boxing champion to be a vegetarian.
Let me know what the Jofre vs Medal fight is like, I haven't got that... Medal was a great little mexican fighter who koed Harada in a classic before Harada Beat Jofre for the bantam title.... after he was champ Harada gave Medal a rematch with the title at stake and beat Medal on points.... outboxing him for much of the fight.
After Jofre won the world title in 1960 he took part in a proccession through the capital of Brazil and insisted that the proccession include a detour through the barrio town in which he had been brought up.

The Jofre v Medel fight displayed Jofres amazing skills this was the first time iv'e sen his fight and to be honest the man is remarkable fighter, Jofre cntrolled the early rounds with his jab and right hand in fifth he unleashes a fluury that nearly puts Medel down if it wasn't for the bell that saved him, in the 10th rd Medel backs jofre into the ropes and unleahes his own combination Jofre looks hurt but his iron chin allows him to absorb medel's best shot he then throws a wikced left hook that rattles medel once again medel is saved by the bell, but in the 10 jofres knowing that medel is hurt goes after him he hurts him with repeated bodyshots and the booooooooom a straight right floors medels for the count and it's all over, overall a great performance by Jofre.
The Harada series looks very interesting looks like i got add those to my collection, thanks for the info Silkov.

fornicate, what a question. He was certainly an all time great, easily one of the greatest fighters to ever step into a ring.
To put it into perspective, even Nat Fleischer, who was biased against all fighters not of his generation (such men as Ali) held Jofre up there as one of the greatest fighters he had ever seen, even comparing him to Robinson.
I wish I was apart of that time period and to have seen him fight in person, its a shame I came a little too late and only seen him fight on film. Very superb fighter, amazing longetivity, no short of phenomenal.

See the film.TonyJ wrote:I've heard that Jofre v Harad 1 was real close and many felt that Jofre deserved the decesion now that i think about it im not sure if it was 1 or 2, iv'e never seen the fight but iv'e heard about on other forums.
What did you think about it?
Harada hurt Jofre badly with a big uppercut,
and from there Jofre was out of the fight.
An amazing win for Harada, who was smaller than Jofre, and was fighting a great fighter.
