Harris in confident mood ahead of Witter fight
6 September 2007

Vivian Harris is in confident mood ahead of his fight against WBC Light-Welterweight Champion Junior Witter on Friday.

Harris (New York/Guyana) challenges Witter (Bradford, England) for the most prestigious world title at the The Dome at Doncaster Lakeside on a Hennessy Sports show in association with GoldenPalace.com.

Both weighed in at the first time of asking this afternoon, (Witter 9st 13lb 8 oz, Harris 9st 13lb).

Witter makes his second defence after out-pointing DeMarcus Corley (USA) for the title last year and defending against Arturo Morua (Mexico) last time out in January.

The challenger does not consider Witter's style or his home advantage as a problem in his attempt to become a two-time world champion.

"I am here to get to get the job done and I'm not making any predictions," said Harris, the former WBA champion.

"I just know that come the end of the fight I will be WBC champion.

"I don't know what's going to happen when the fight starts but I'm going to do what I've got to do.

"He has an awkward style. He fights a bit like a coward, but I have faced more awkward people.

"I've got a lot of weapons and I'm going to win that belt. I'm not worried about the judging, the crowd or Witter, nothing."

The Hennessy Sports show in association with title partners GoldenPalace.com will be screened live on Sky Sports and also features the English Super-Flyweight Title fight between Robert Nelson and Andy Bell in an all-Yorkshire encounter.

Also in action is top domestic lightweight Lee Meager, who meets Hungarian Laszlo Komjathi in an international ten round contest.

I'm quite looking forward to it to be honest.

I know many of you are worried about the styles not exactly 'meshing' and producing a stinker but they can both bang a bit, it has potential.

I think we are also spoilt at the moment with Hatton-PBF & Calzaghe-Kessler to look forward to so it doesn't stand out as much but it is a genuine world title fight between two genuine world class fighters.

Despite being the holder of the WBC belt, Witter is not big box office but it is a major fight between Witter the champion and Harris the former WBA title holder - Lets hope its good and lasts a bit because on paper the only other fight worth seeing is the one involving Lee Meager - Both fighters are heavy hitters so a KO is quite likely and Harris I think will land it - I would like to see Witter retain but I just feel Harris will prove to be too much and will get a late stoppage - I hope I am wrong but Witter is not as good as he was and against the better fighters he doesnt seem to be able to find the target with the big bomb - I would be very, very surprised to see Harris hit the canvas but boxing is full of surprises so maybe, just maybe - Anyway not long now for the first of four potentially very exciting fights - Lets hope Junior can set the trend for the others with a good win.

I too think Harris wins, its just an instinct I have.

I'm just not sure Witter has twelve effective rounds in him.

Harris beat an awkward opponent Urkal in his backyard late.

Harris has significant height advantages too.

I'm really excited about this fight. I think it could be a cracker.

Got the potential to be a good fight, but as ever it's all down to Witter.

According to his trainer, he's going to take the fight to Harris, as standing off such a tall opponent could lead to trouble...not sure how true that'll turn out to be - Witter COMING FORWARD???

Harris is quality alright, and back to his best going by his last fight - he can crack with the right hand, but ( so far ) Witter has shown an excellent chin.

I reckon Junior can win this - if he hits his best form he could even bomb out Harris.

I'm just praying we don't get another really negative Witter performance - that would really be the end for him, and hopefully he knows that.

Witter coming forward! Remember the way he fainted his way across the ring against N'Dou, forcing him against the ropes without throwing a punch then knocking him over? Maybe he'll just do that, over and over?

I'll go for Witter to prevail, probably on points.

Don't have a lot to base that on other than a feeling that despite the age difference Harris might have less left in the tank than Witter and if Junior can pop him a few times Harris might be reluctant to commit and lose rounds.

I've a feeling Junior's in for a rough night. If Harris is properly trained for 12 hard rounds and paces himself, he should come on over the second half of the fight by when Witter has usually burnt himself out.

That's the way I see it too. If he fades like he did against Kotelnik he may not get away with it this time.

Harris fades too. Both deply flawed but talented fighters. My head says Harris beats him with straight punches but the heart says Witter will be forced to do something bigger than normal and pull off a hard win.

It could come down judges interpretation if there are a few scrappy rounds. What odds someone is crying 'robbery' at the end of this one?

Harris does not have great footwork, and that will always leave him one step behind Witter I feel.

I'd love to see Witter knock this guy out.

i cant see junior winning this one on points but i can see him stopping harris, witter surely hits harder than maussa.

Well, 18 out of 20 of Maussa's wins came inside the distance but I think it was more exhaustion and under preperation that knocked Harris over rather than Maussa's power. Then that punch after he went down took him out altogether in case he even thought about getting up.

I think Harris has a decent enough chin, and I'm not convinced Witter has that much power. He had a streak of KO's against glorified bums and then when he stepped it up it was distance galore.
