Romania Golden Belt results - day two

Romania Golden Belt tournament takes place from 3rd-9th September

10 boxers from the GB team arrived safely in Romania to participate in tournament in Constanta city. The boxers representing the British team are:

48Kg Mo Nassir (Wales) and Darren Langley

51Kg Khalid Yafai

54Kg Joe Murray

57Kg Stephen Smith

64Kg Bradley Saunders

69Kg Neil Perkins

75Kg James Degale

91Kg Danny Price and Stephen Simmons (Scotland)

Tuesday

The first night of boxing in Romania kicked off with Darren Langley vs Yong Hay from Korea. The result of this bout was never in doubt with Darren dominating the young Korean from the bell. Darren now progresses to the last 8 where he meets Fernat from Turkey.

The second GB bout featured Joe Murray vs Hussain from Turkey. Joe allowed the turk an early lead and was 3 down after the first, however he regained his composure and won the last 3 rounds to win on points.

The last GB bout of Tuesday evening featured Bradley Saunders vs Onder of Turkey. Bradley had a difficult first round and was 1 down at the end, however he soon picked up tempo and after some good pressure in second round overturned the scores and climbed one point ahead. He made his superior strength show in the third round with solid rights and good jabs to win the fight. Bradley boxes again in the quarter finals on Thursday.

Wednesday

51kg Khalid Yafai (ENG) bt Rares (CYP) - RSC1

Khalid negotiated his senior international debut with style and confidence. He landed a quality right cross within the first 10 seconds and never looked back. Realising that he could dominate his opponent he went to work with some relish. The cypriot took a standing count after a good combination and the towel was thrown in while the bell for the first round was still some way off.

An excellent opener for Khalid. Sadly not all contests can be this easy. Khalid faces the double Olympic medallist Jerome Thomas (FRA) in the quarter-finals tomorrow. However, after this excellent showing and a week of hard sparring in Poland a fortnight ago Khalid is confident of causing a major upset.

54kg Joe Murray (ENG) beat Man Soon Chul (KOR) 22:10

Joe Murray improved his performance significantly from yesterday's level to beat the Korean and secure a bronze medal in the process. An energetic first round saw both boxers throwing a lot of punches. Joe edged the round with some more accurate punching. 5:3.

Joe lost a little focus in the 2nd and 3rd spending too much time circling his opponent and failing to dominate the centre of the ring. However, he was still in command at 14:10. After a few stern words from Terry Edwards in the corner Joe emerged strongly for the fourth, punching accurately and maintaining his form to the final bell. A comfortable 22:10 victory in the final analysis.

Joe faces another quality French Olympian in the semi-final on Friday (Hallab Ali)

69kg Neil Perkins, 91kg Danny Price and Stephen Simmons all box later tonight. Results to follow... 5/5 so far....

This is the last opportunity for a run-out before the World Champs. The Golden Belt has turned out to be a big event with approximately 20 nations competing, and a total of 147 boxers taking part. This should be a good experience for the British team with some tough competition.

I see that Fundo Mhura has been suspended because of a reacurring eye problem, he isn't allowed to box for the forseeable future, big shame for the lad, who had worked so hard to try and get into the Olympic team.

GB have picked up 6 Bronze medals so far with Mo Nasir , Darren Langley, Joe Murray, Bradley Saunders , Neil Perkins and James Degale All reaching the Semi Finals .
The first Olympic Qualifying event takes place next Month at the World championships in Chicago.
Boxers who reach quarter finals will qualify after that there are 2 other tournaments to qualify in for European Boxers they are to be in Italy and Greece next year.
Britian has a great chance of getting more then one boxer qualified at the worlds With Inform Boxers Joe Murray younger brother of Professional John Murray,
Stephen Smith whos older brother Paul is competing in Contender 3 at moment,
Bradley Saunders , Frankie Gavin , and James Degale.
These lads as well as Neil Perkins , Darren Langley , Mo Nasir , Danny Price and Stephen Simmons all have a good chance with a bit of luck in the draw.
