Witter - Harris or Corely

Post by Albert »

Which has been Junior Witters best victory in his career.

In naming that win do you go for the manner of the victory or the names on the CV of the opponent.

I cannot understand people wetting themselves so much over the Harris win, just wait a second by looking at who Harris fought in comparison to say Corely?

On many many occasions I see many of you disecting Hatton's opponents and the manner of his victories -

Do you think Witters victory was that good against Harris, or is your glee and over the top plaudits more out of relief due to you being able to carry on hoping and praying the Hatton fight will happen or is it out of genuine belief that Witter really did perform that well.

I will give you my view. I thought Witter proved beyond doubt that he belongs in the world class ranks of the Light Welterweight Division, but he has yet to prove he is deserving of a place anywhere near the top 15 of the P4P rankings.

World class definitely. Best victory for me has to be Corely. Look at the CV of that fighter. But you have to say a fighter at the end of his career

The Harris victory as good as it was was nothing in comparison to the Corely win in my view. That fight was an excellent piece of matchmaking. A very good victory.

Harris... I think he has a better CV of wins than Corley.

Harris is the best win I think.

I also think Corley and Nd'ou are good wins and Kotelnik and Lynes ( due to Lynes recent run of form).

Stu,

Don't get me wrong I thought the Corely win was bloody boring, where as the Harris win was a lot better, but seriously I am asking who is the better fighter Harris or Corely?

Look at Corely's CV, Witter, PBF, Cotto and Judah, then look at the defeats - you could argue he has done okay.

Then look at Harris - involved in 2 titanic struggles against Oktay Urkal. Need I go on.

Corley isn't in the same league as Harris. Harris has far better wins - Hurtado, Ukral, Mbaiye, Johnston, Lazcano. Corley hasn't beaten a fighter as good as any of those 5

Compare wins not who they've been in with. Is Emanual Augustus better than both?

Lazcano not proven at world level.

Urkal not proven at world level.

Mbaye need anyone say anymore.

Of course it has to be Harris. The manner of the victory and performance is all important against a dangerous opponent. Many had this as a 50/50 fight, but Witter dominated him and looked very impressive.

I understand about people going overboard, but on that showing I think he is the best LWW outside of Hatton right now. The calls from some that he will KO Hatton is really redredging old arguments from those pissed off that they haven't faced by now.

As for P4P status Witter has to face and beat someone within those rankings or dominate the rest of the LWW division, which at the moment is light of truly elite company.

Lazcano - went close with Castillo
Ukral - went close with Tyszu and gave Cotto problems and Euro Champ who beat Magee
Mbaiye - World Champ and Euro Champ beat abnd drew with Kotelnik

Whos Corley beat? The best name sames to be Randal Bailey who was stopped by Hurtado, who Harris beat

Harris is clearly (at least in my mind) the better win. Corley hadn't won a fight of any note for over three and a half years prior to fighting Witter, and he got himself knocked out against a guy nobody had ever heard of at 130lb's in his next fight.

To be honest, I'm not sure the Corley fight is a big deal on Witter's C.V. Kotelnik beats Corley at this point. As do Urango, Lynes and Kevin Anderson, if I'm naming names.

Of course Corely is past it States. Too old now, but he has some impressive names on his opponents list.

Harris is the better fighter - Corley was inept on the night and I think it is safe to assume he had seen his best nights before facing Witter.

It will be interesting to see what Harris does now.

Exactly.

Both Corely and Harris were on the slide, before anyone says no I am not taking anything away from Witter's victories, I will say it again he deserves his place in the world class ranks.

Plenty of fighters including Hatton have beaten fighters who are in the twilight of their career or definitely on the slide and plenty of boxers will do the same in the future.

What worries me slightly is there are some as usual who are going way over the top with the comments concerning Witter and other boxers just because he won a fight with what was a very good performance.

I wonder what this forum would be like if say Hatton beats Mayweather, I bet there will not be too many people giving Witter a chance then.

Incidentally I have no problems going on record stating that I think Mayweather is a truly exceptional fighter and without doubt the very best fighter in the world. I do not think for one minute Hatton will win that fight, just my opinion, and furthermore I think it is a great big mistake Hatton stepping up to Welterweight where he loses a lot of his effectiveness where as Mayweather does not.

With regards to after Mayweather, its my opinion that Hatton could possibly retire if he loses the fight badly, who can blame after earning near on £10m for one fight!!!

You have to give Witter credit. He can only fight guys that will fight him. He did school Corley although it was boring. The Harris win was superb because Witter was sharp, accomplished and all business. Both guys were top WBC contenders - WBC have better challengers than WBO, for instance - and neither had a clue what was happening in that ring.

Junior's got some world class wins. It's not like he can pick and choose, is it? So let's give him some credit.

Would Hatton have chased the WBA belt after Kostya Tszyu had Harris beaten Maussa?

No.

Harris has a far superior record than Corley and is a much more dangerous fighter.

Which fighter had a mandated shot at Corley when he was WBO champion and renaged on it, was it a) Hatton b) Witter or c) both.

I think it was a) Hatton.

I thinking listing the fighters a guy has lost to is a poor way of promoting his ability over another. Harris has beaten several top ten contenders over the years, Corley hasn't.

Harris is Witter's best victory. He must be a very good fighter, he is after all the guy offered 750k to fight Hatton three year ago.

I think saying Urkal is not proven at world level, after his fight with a prime Tszyu, basically shows your knowledge on the matter. You've been shown Harris has at least 5 better wins than anything Corley can manage, admit you were wrong once again, have only ever seen Harris fight Witter and Maussa, and move on

Harris, without question. The fact that Vivian came to fight helped Junior's cause.

Corley lost to all of those fighters. His best win over Randal Bailey and Ener Julio - thats about it.

Struggles or not vs Urkal - he lost the first fight in my opinion clear, he dominated the second fight pretty much all the way and scored a KO (no titantic struggle in the rematch). Criticise Urkal all you want, he's better than Bailey or Julio.

Harris has beaten Hurtado - who was coming of a win against Corley's best victory.

Harris has beaten the likes of Mbaye, Michael Clark, Golden Johnson, and Juan Lazcano... Much better than Corley's top 5 wins (add Urkal in there).

Peter Buckley went the distance once with Naz, does that make him a world class fighter?

Corley is obviously decent who can hang/survive in world class - but no true evidence that he is anything more than fringe world class himself (depending on your definition).

Harris has BEATEN the better guys.

They were both great boxing lessons. Harris was better though and had a KO.

Harris was coming into the fight at 50/50 with two good wins on his belt. I go for him...
