Would it hurt a fighter to come out as gay? Maybe not. There's no such thing as bad publicity, and if a fighter and his people felt the time was right and he could stand the heat, they might make it official just to end rumors.
Would the public accept it? There would be some outcry and "what's-this-world-coming-to?" editorials, but it would fade. Maybe boxing is the place where something like this will happen. Not even a century ago, just having a black champion sent gasps through the mainstream public.
And I have my suspicions about Hamed - too much glitter. Reminded me of Elton John.

viking eric...as no one else has replied to your question about the death of paret's affect on friday night fights....I'll do the best i can. The newspapers and antiboxing writers made a huge deal of this, and the story played for a while because paret didn't die immediately. i don't think there was any effect on friday night tv boxing.....but had already seen its big heyday anyway.
the weekend afternoon death (forget whether it was sunday or saturday)...back when networks were broadcasting some virtually every week .....of the challenger who got killed by boom boom mancini caused a much bigger uproar. it's one of the major reasons fights were shortened from 15 rounds to twelve. i don't know if it had any negative effect on the actual televising of boxing, but it didn't help.
p.s. major rumors that dempsey and jack kearns had a gay relationship. kearns a bachelor...dempsey with a high pitched voice...and supposedly kearns was jealouis when dempsey married that lady actress....estelle taylor. i think it's obvious that this was nonsense.

Dude, you're just trying to start something... A feat which you are better off not accomplishing.
I don't hate Lennox, and just because I said he's homosexual, and I gave instances that prove it enough for just about anyone... You get all offensive, and there's no reason to be. There's no argument here, I think he's gay, you think his "lover" is just very physically affectionate... Whatever the case may be, it doesn't really matter.
You may be right, you may be wrong, all I said was if he is gay, he should have came out years ago... I don't see how you have a problem with that. But if you have one, end it here.

his 'logic' is that courtney shand, one of his best friends, consoled him after he was knocked out... so does that mean every single boxer who's ever been knocked out and consoled by a close firend is actually having a homosexual relationship with that person?
he ignores the fact that lennox is married and has had a long string of girlfriends.
he ignores the fact that there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest lennox is gay.
if lennox was gay i too would think its pretty cool but the sheer amount of evidence aginst it makes it unlikely in the extreme.
'the_power', your saying you agree with this logic? what a retard!!

Demarcus Corley is married too... Yet alot of people think he's gay...
I defend Corley, so I know why you might defend Lewis, but I'm not thrashing him because he's gay(unlike the people I defend Corley against). I'm just saying, I think he is, and he'd make a great figure if he came out, no need to get offended.
If someone said, I think Demarcus Corley would make a great ambassador to the gay community, what am I gonna say? "fornicate you, retard simpleton prick!" ? No.
I personally know more than one gay man who is married (to a woman)... So don't throw that fact at me like it's concrete, because it's not. I'm not trying to offend anyone, there should be no offense taken by anything I've said.

All of this talk about Lennox Lewis and him being from West Ham, remains me of the movie "The Crying game" and this exchange in a small Tottenham apartment between Stephen Rea and Jaye Davidson

West Ham and East Ham are two distinct areas in East London (adjacent, but distinct, a bit like Wolverhampton and Walsall). West Ham, obviously, due to the football link, is more renowned. But it was actually East Ham where Lennox was brought up as a child by his single mum till she emigrated to Kitchener, Ontario when Lennox was 12. It's only something small, but I think it's worth pointing out.Broncano wrote:Details, Bennie, Details...

Lewis says he's hetero, and untill I see photos of him, hand in hand with Elton John on a beach wearing matching thongs, I believe him.Tantum wrote:Demarcus Corley is married too... Yet alot of people think he's gay...

That was just my Jaye Davidson impression, I guess it didnt work...bennie wrote:West Ham and East Ham are two distinct areas in East London (adjacent, but distinct, a bit like Wolverhampton and Walsall). Thank you for pointing it out. I myself was aware of the differences (I was at Upton Park in October 92 saw West Ham thrashing Sunderland 6-0) and nonetheless also made the same mistake.
Even then more than football or Lewis when I hear West Ham mentioned I think of delicious Pakistani kebabs a few blocks from Upton Park tube station. :P

IIRC, Brown was openly gay, either during or after his career. He was a fascinating person; good friends with Ernest Hemingway and leader of a popular jazz troupe.Ric wrote:So was said about 1930s Bantamweight Champion Panama Al Brown by the 1998 Frenchlanguage-book written by Spaniard Eduardo Arroyo, entitled "'Panama' Al Brown 1902-1951."
Brown's record, per research by BoxRec Editors:

Seriously, let's try to agree on a few things, rather than just flaming each other:
1) There is a stigma attached to being gay in most "manly" sports, and boxing is about the most extremely macho sport there is. Thus, few if any gay or bisexual boxers would want that fact to be publicly known.
2) It's not at all unusual for gay or bisexual men to be married and have children and to all public view appear to be heterosexual family men. That could be because they're gay but don't want to admit the fact to themselves (especially in repressed cultural or family milieux), or they're gay/bi but want a "normal" family life including children, or any number of reasons.
3) I dont think Tantum's point was to bash gays, merely to say that in an ultra-macho sport like boxing, it would be cool if a respected champion who happens to be gay had the moxy to publicly admit the fact. Of course none of us who hasn't been in Lennox Lewis' bedroom every time he's slept with somone can say with any certainty whether Lewis is gay or bisexual. There's no proof positive that he is, there are only persistent rumors. If this were a court of law then it would obviously be straight until proven otherwise, but this is the court of public opinion, and often when the rumors are very persistent and come from multiple sources, there is something to them. I don't think any reasonable person would respect Lewis any less as a boxer if he were gay/bi, but let's face it, there are many unreasonable people in the world.
