Should Carl Froch Fight Tony Dodson Next Fight???

Post by get in the ring »

There has been much debate as to whether Carl Froch should challenge British champion Tony Dodson in his very next fight, after winning an eliminator with Alan Page.

The argument is -

Should Froch fight Dodson and win what is a winnable fight for the Nottingham puncher, where would he go after? There's a big gap between Dodson and the top 3 in Britain (Calzaghe, Reid, Magee) and you'd think Froch is a couple of years away from mixing with that type of crowd. Is there the worry that if Froch were to beat Dodson for the British title, he would find it hard to find suitable challengers in Britain, and his opponent level would drop?

The alternative is Froch fighting a few fights before the Dodson title shot, against tough foreign opposition, and continue his learning curve before embarking on championship class.

What do you think? British title shot next fight, or a few more tough, learning fights?

Here's a report of his last fight against Alan Page that I did. I thought he was impressive.

Its a tough one to call, he could fight Dodson now and then combine a few easier British title defences (Foster, Adrian Dodson, Barney etc) and mix in some tougher European challengers.

Who's the commonwealth champion now (didn't Thysse vacate?) that always good to get some experience under your belt.

I'd like to see Froch continue to learn (i.e. continue to fighter better than Page all the time) but yes Magee, Cately, Starie etc are a bit too tough for the moment.

However, I'm sure he can win the lonsdale belt without fighting these guys.

I expect Froch to beat Dodson but he wouldnt have it all his own way. A championship fight, against an determined opponent with ability would be a good test for Froch. I thought he did quite well against Page but it's difficult to measure his performance because we don't know how good Page is. Lets see how he rebounds before going overboard on Froch's brilliance.

People like Catley, Reid, Calzaghe will never be interested in fighting for the British title again. There's so many more tin pot ones for them to concern themselves with. Froch can defend the British crown against fairly untaxing opposition, win the Commonwealth and maybe fight for the European.
