Is it me or is Amir Khan's next oponent a bit of a joke

yet another light punching (non punching) fighter is doing nothing to give me any confidence that Khan will learn anything about taking a shot. His 14th fight for someone with a good ametre pedagry is a bit of a joke.

Not good for boxing as he is the only fighter who's fights continue to be on ITV particularly judging by the joke bill its on http://www.boxrec.com/date_search.php?y ... m=10&dd=06

It will be the second best fighter Khan has fought, so I don't think it is a joke.

Maybe a little bit debatable with Komjathi.

This is about softest touch you can get for a domestic title.
He has been hand picked to give Amir an easy 1st defence and a confidence boost after he was nearly derailed by Limond .
Lawton is naturally smaller and a non puncher, so fits in well to Khan's usual suspects.
Lawton himself is a proud man who wil turn up in shape and to win so will make for decent TV.
However he doesn't do anything well enough in any department to trouble the Olympian

Agree with coco.

Only to add that eventually he will have to step in with someone who can bang a bit - And the way it is going he isn't going to be prepared.

The question is not weather he is a nice guy indeed I don't think its entirely his fault but everytime I watch him he is too open when he unloads and that caused him problems against the light punching Limmond he will not learn unless he is taking more live opponents and he still looks like he has his ametre head guard on.

At this stage of his career he should be fighting better opposition with each fight but this is definitely a step back. Lawton lost his last fight and fought 2 of Khans opponents but didnt beat either as convincingly.

He wont be allowed to go in with Jon Thaxton till his team are convinced Thaxton is past it

After nearly getting knocked out by Limond, it is clear that Khan is not really ready to take a big step up in class at this stage. I quite liked the look of Lawton in his fight with Thaxton, which was a pretty gutsy performance, so it should make for a decent fight. I may even have a small bet on Lawton at 9-1 just for kicks. All in all, I think Khan still needs a couple more learning fights like this before challenging Thaxton or advancing to a higher grade of fighter.

Limond fight was a wake-up call, so no surprise and understandable they have taken a step back for this one

When documentaries are made they film a whole lot more than we ever get to see - Most of it gets dumped by the editor who has a bias either for or against whoever, or whatever - Obviously they wanted Khan to look good and sound reasonable so everything in his favour is kept and Khan shooting his mouth off as an example would be dumped - Directors, producers and editors therefore have a lot of power and can either make you or break you - Documentaries can therefore be very misleading rather than unbiased and informative which is what they are supposed to be - Lets be honest the program was largely political - A white Christian lad having achieved exactly the same is unlikely to have a documetary like that made with his religion being a major feature in the program - Its a clever way of getting people of different cultures and religions to live with and accept each other better which can only be a good thing - Amir Khan is therefore an icon of the Asian community in multicultural Britain and not just a highly talented boxer - Lewis Hamilton is the same and not just a star of F1 and a documentary about his success so far was screened just last night on BBC3 - These young men can therefore do a lot not only for their sport and their country but to help mixed communities across the land to get on better and live peaceably together.

"14th fight for someone with a good ametre pedagry" - how many senior am fights did he have again? 8? 9? 10?

Everyone jumps on Amirs opponents but in reality he's fighting better guys now than the non existant JOhn Murray is, or the (former) senior ABA champ Kev Mitchel was. Scott's a good proud man, he has a decent jab and as previously mentioned gave Thaxton a few problems to think about. A good developmental fight.

Or should we throw Amir to the lions and hope his career is ruined by a comprehensive beat down?

He won silver in the olympics thats a pretty good peddagree I myself thought he should have stayed ametre because he would learn more there than fighting those guys but warren saw his investmant tarneshed when Kahn got Knocked down in the ABAs. That was a shame for Amir's carrer.

Murray has fought some good international opponents including gaining the WBC jr or what ever title and also fought over seas which is also good for his expireance. The problem with Khan is that he is now fighting pretty much on the top of very poor bills without having much of a contest which is not good for boxing.

I don't blame Khan, I think he is a nice kid, I think he is good for multicultural britain however I think taking on light punching fighters is bad for him and bad for british boxing.

I'd say he was in a very competative bout last time out, and is in good company as commonwealth champ.

I think its pretty safe to say that unless his defence is sorted he's going to struggle, regardless.

Lawton has a good jab and is a seasoned campaigner. he'll give Amir something to think about. He's also got a decent chin, so I dont expect Amir to blast him out, if at all.

Realisticaly how many people would pick Khan over Thaxton just now. So why would Warren put them in together?

I would just like him against a fighter with a few KOs on there record, even someone like Dean Phillips without the greatest win rate but who we know can bang a bit. Its dangerouse for his development taking on all these soft punching fighters cos Im sure that who ever he tries to take a belt off will be able to.

He has to defend himself against Lawton, it only reduces the risk of him getting KO'd ... which I suspect is Warrens plan.

Think some are being a tad unfair here.... Okay, Khan has spoken of his ambitions - but it no-one really had a bad word to say when Lawton challenged for the British title vs Thaxton.

Thaxton needs to get a move one if he is too fight for a world title (which he still says he wants to do). Khan is still learning. No-one had a problem for a fully matured, experienced, hard hitting champion with a proven chin facing Lawton with a more prestigious belt on the line. But for a not fully matured, inexperienced, hard hitting champion with an unproven chin facing Lawton with a less prestigious belt - it is a joke.

I personally don't/didn't have a problem with Lawton facing either fighter for either belt... He's alright.

But its because Thaxton's chin has been proven its less of a problem, there are a certain kind of fighter who are glairingly absent from Amir's record and thats bad for his development. To be clear Im not criticisin Khan but whoever is choosing the opponents. I want Khan to learn from different kinds of opponents who have different qualities. Someone who hits hard needs to be part of that.

Also I think the undercards not great for a nationaly telivised fight.

Good post Stu. Whatever the ambitions / hopes that surround Khan, right now he is 13-0 and Commonwealth champion.

It seems some just want to see Khan matched with a puncher asap so they can start rubbing their hands together.

I really hope Thaxton v Khan is made before long though, it would be one of the most anticipated domestic showdowns in recent years I'm sure.

Think VIP promotions / maloney promotions / Sky might have something to say about that. Also, Jamie has a hand in http://www.vipboxingequipment.com so i'd see it unlikely for him to leave.
Oh, and another thing, all of warrens fighters apart form Khan are with setanta now, no?

Everyone seems to have forgotten that following Lawton (providing Khan wins) he'll face earl.
