Carlos Zarate had a UNBELIAVABLE record at the time of 52-0, with 51 KOs. But in Puerto Rico, he was thrashed by the great Wilfredo Gomez in 5 rounds. Now the excuses are that Zarate was "sick" before the fight and was not in proper shape, but chose to fight on instead of cancelling it. Many said that he understimated Gomez.
In the other hand, it was Gomez turn when he went up to 126 pounds to challenge the great Salvador Sanchez and got thrashed and outbombed in 8 rounds so easily. Rumours were that Gomez with 32-0-1 with 32 KOs at the time, was with a Puerto Rican beauty contestant for days before the fight instead of training. Some say that he understimated Sanchez. I personally believe this one. I do not think that Wilfredo was in great shape and it showed. He does not fight like I was accostumed seeing fight. I do not buy that Sanchez was better. Something was wrong with Wilfredo Gomez.
