All our world champs are northerners. 8)

Plus Southerners speak too hyper like the way Napa and Haskins were speaking yesterday.

It's pretty clear I would say that the North of England has produced far more quality figthers per capita than the south.

Especially these days, there are very few world class fighters coming out of the South of England, and London itself seems a bit of a boxing wilderness these days.

Out of london there are some good people largely because of the ethnic diversity of the city (and the fact that 7 million people live there). Lennox Lewis, Ian Naper David Haye etc. The north gives you Amir Khan Junior Witter Vikky Fatton, Clinton Woods.

Carl Froch is alone in representing the midlands.

London has always been the epicentre of British boxing with Glasgow, Cardiff, Belfast and Manchester having surges with differing promotional outfits throughout the last century. Today is different of course with top class domestic boxers and boxing in all parts of the country.

On thing about Fwanks empire is that he brought boxing out of the capital.

I think the first time Frank Bruno (our biggest drawcard since Henry Cooper) first fought outside the capital was in Birmingham against Carl 'The Truth' Williams and that was his 35th fight. (I think)

In the late 1970s and 1980s, good fighters from the north west like the Gilbody's, Gary Stretch, Keith Wallace, Jimmy Price etc had to go down to London to fight as pros.

One thing I do want to know from any of the the Londoners on here was about the 'all white' boxing clubs phenonemon that existed around south east/east London. Was there amateur clubs that had a colour bar or is it 'urban myth'?

I have to say, this is the first time I have ever heard this, but thinking about it I can certainly see how some people believe it.

I boxed from 1978 through the 80’s, and my East London club had a few black and Asian kids boxing for us who had started several years previous to me. I recall other gyms having a few black guys and Asians boxing for them as well throughout that period.

It was certainly a different time, and the boxing culture was predominantly a white one, with prejudicial overtones and a ‘white’ east end underworld mentality. I know that our guys didn't get a warm reception on a few occasions (especially the Asians).

There most certainly appeared to be clubs that had ‘all white’ boxers turning out for them, but I find it difficult (although not impossible) to believe that they had a ‘colour bar’ at them. I find it more likely that given that there were relatively few black and Asian boxers back then, that those who were attracted to the sport gravitated to those clubs that already had boxers of their ethnic persuasion.

I left London in 1971 and back then London was very racist blocking the opportunities of black people for decent jobs - They could get employment as porters, bus conducters and drivers and work on the underground but they would not be considered for promotion - The police for many years wouldnt allow Black or Asian applicants - Buckingham Palace still wont as far as I know employ Black people - Wouldnt surprise me at all if Black people back then had difficulty getting into boxing gyms - Black people were invited here because London Transport had a problem with recruitment - They arrived here expecting the opportunity to earn money and get on but instead they were treated as modern day slaves - Good enough to do the menial jobs but not good enough to take supervisory positions - There were no black bus inspectors when I left London - Thankfully times have changed and society is generally more tolerant.

At the moment, and for the past 6-7 years, Manchester is, and has been, the capital of boxing. Plus we've had all the fighters from Sheffield as well. North wins easily. :D
