for speed my brother everyone on the boxing team used to hate sparring him cos u couldnt land a glove on him and when you did manage to land one he would counter you with a 741 punch combination

pretty disappointed with this billy you swore to me when i hit you with that sweet bodyshot that it was the hardest you have ever been hit... made me feel good for a while anyway

dean phillips sparred with robbie regan and steve robinson when they were both world champions he would spar with both taking it in turns alternative rounds that was when he won the world kickboxing championship great sparring regan for the speed robinson for the preasure he had the chance to go anywhere for sparring but there was no better place than dai gardners gym in the valleys he allways had very good pro boxers there plus the two world champions at the time

Thats not hard if your willing to travel it is easy to get sparring.
He did most of his sparring with Floyd Havard at Colin Breen's gym who was managing them both at the time

It was after he had retired - he was 45 I think! BUt he was talking about a comeback. He was unfit.

To be frank, I'm seriously happy he scrapped the comeback. HE was terrible - ragged and unfit, although he did show glimpses of his power, just in how he threw shots when he was giving a demonstration or on the bag.

He was very gentlemanly and never tried to dig in big shots - he even said he didn't approve of sparring wars, contrary to his previous reputation.

Is he still around

As far as I understand he lives in Australia now, and is there now. Haven't seen him for 18 months now.

There is a guy who knows him at the gym; I will ask him. Hopefully he's financially comfortable.

I 'sparred' with Stephen Smith but we were about 14, he had been boxing a long time already and I hadn't and he gave me taps and took it easy - and I'm much bigger than him

Funny enough, I've been slapped by her in the very same nightclub. She came in once with Adele Stephens and we were saying to them why are you here for student night? Lisa replied because its great and I was like but Visage is a pile os shit to which she told offence and slapped me!

A good one Ive witnessed was when Frank Bruno came to Chicago he stopped by the gym I trained in and went a few rounds with Tillis.
Id say Frank got the better of that session. It was 1983 before Frank became big.
Many people dont realize he fought in Chicago.
He was a real nice guy.

He KO'd a bearded Mike Jameson in 2 rounds

Sparred with personally - done a 2 or 3 warm up rounds with Hennessy once but got battered by Dennis Hobson over 3 rounds in Vegas.

Mind you I am told Paul King packs a good punch!!!

Sorry, Adele Stephens - Adele Silva is the one I meant - Kelly from Emerdale. Yeah 1998 it was, on a Tuesday night, which was student night, a £1 a drink!
