Derry Mathews wins Boxing Writers Young Boxer Award

Derry Mathews has been given a big boost ahead of his WBU World Featherweight title defence against Matthew Marsh.

The unbeaten Liverpool fighter has been nominated as the Boxing Writers' Young Boxer of the Year and will pick up the award at a glittering ceremony at the Savoy Hotel.

Mathews, who won the title from Stephen Foster Jnr with a superb performance last year, makes the second defence against Marsh at the York Hall on Saturday 13th October.

'I nearly choked on my cornflakes when I got the call to say I had won!' said Mathews.

'I'm really honoured that the respected and knowledgeable boxing writers have chosen me as their boxer of the year.

"When you look down the list of great British fighters who have previously won the award it makes your spine tingle.

"I never would have imagined that my name would appear alongside Randolph Turpin who beat the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson.

'I've got a tough title defence against Marsh coming up but I'm confident in my skills as are the boxing writers who nominated me and I've trained hard so I'm going in there to put on a great performance and retain my title.'

Mathews is the first fighter from Liverpool in nearly 20 years to win the prestigious award.

The last was Paul Hodkinson who went on to win the WBC World Featherweight title.

Previous winners from Merseyside are John Conteh, Keith Wallace and Alan Rudkin.

allegedly, who has promoted fourteen past winners including Nigel Benn, Naseem Hamed, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton, said:

'I am absolutely delighted for Derry and his achievements. He was a superb amateur and has excelled in the professional ranks and I'm expecting big things from him in the future.

"Liverpool has produced some great fighters in the past and there is some fantastic young talent coming through now with the likes of Paul Smith, Stephen Burke, Joe McNally and pro-debutant Tony Bellew and we are looking forward to promoting some big events with these guys when the new Liverpool Echo Arena opens next year.'

Derry's a good prospect with potential but he doesn't deserve that award yet.

You are usually the only guy who fights our corner. I think he has achieved more than any of the other nominees regardless of who you think has more potential down the line. Not a good night v's John Simpson, granted, but he deffo won the fight (farcical scoring aside). I also think John's last performance against Andy Morris put things in better perspective .

derry scraps by in british title level fights and gets the award.

Scrapes by? Give it a rest! I don't get peoples dislike for Matthews. He has one less than stellar showing against Simpson (who's no mug), and it undoes all the good work he's done. People are quick to forget his excellent display V Stephen Foster Jnr.

I thought he won 9 rounds to 3 Vs Simpson but the knockdown and point deductions made the scores close.

I agree with Kevo.

Fighters like Hatton and Cotto aren't that much criticised for fouling but Derry Is.

i just suggested that the choices were poor this year.

not that he neccesarily didn't deserve the award.

Fewkes can fight. But the guy I like the look of more is young Nathan Cleverly. He is in the Calzaghe gym and getting great schooling, although a lad who is a student at Cardiff Uni studying maths in clearly no stanger to the concept of study. He is a good technician, learning with every fight at a rate of knots and also a nice bloke. Maybe, just maybe, if he can keep it together for a year or two, he could be an emerging talent who can go a very long way. Not many people are talking about him at the moment, but my hunch is that will soon change. He could be very good.

You're not wrong there. The only way I can justify Matthews getting the nod over Anderson, is becuse he remained undefeated! But when you take in to account Andersons wins, that shouldn't matter

I personally think it would be okay if you have won the British and/or Commonwealth title, but if you win an EBU title then no.

What about English or EU champions, what about Intercontinental baubles.

It would be a bit harsh for Kevin not to be recognised for his achievements. He cannot help he is better than those in his age bracket and surely a World champion (Hatton or Witter) or someone like Colin Lynes will win the senior title.

I think you have gone too far if you have won a British title or above, the trinket belts don't count.

Thats just my opinion, it's not worth a proper argument.

Really depends how much it is a prospect award and how much it is a young persons award
