Is Pavlik v Taylor on UK TV?
David Reid couldn't hold a shot, he had a fair few come from the floor to win fights. But when up against it, he stayed down. I do think he had the fighters heart but not the tools.
Good fight, I picked the right man - but dissapointed in him actually. I was expecting him to see him outwork Taylor and be quite dominating. He wasn't. I think Joe Calzaghe is breathing a sigh... Taylor is the tougher fight for Joe.

Spot on Sir.Autobarn wrote: I believe Taylor won't be the same. This was the fight where he actually came out with a lot of spunk, rattled off combos and moved very nicely - he fought better than ever, and then he was flattened. He plainly doesn't have the energy levels to keep up the punch and move strategy which he'd have to use in a rematch.
I can't see Taylor doing any better in a rematch either. Everthing went right for him early on, he brought his A game & it still wasn't enough.
I can see Taylor being a little gunshy in a rematch & Pavlik getting the job done quicker next time.
Personally, I’d be surprised if Taylor took an immediate rematch.
Another pearl of a one-liner from Dooley - should have saved it for your fight report!Terry D wrote:I may have come across as terse last night VM, apologies if that is the case. I just think Taylor has more in common with Richard Reid (the abortive shoe bomber) than David.
Taylor, like Richard, had all the tools but just needed a little spark to set them all off.
I think that Taylor has the right tools (although appears to lack stamina) but the big thing that for me prevents him from fulfilling his potential is that he just doesn't seem to love boxing.
I wondered if there was a little of Lewis-Rahman about Saturdays fight in that Taylor got tired and Pavlik got lucky?
I think Taylor showed he has what it takes to beat Pavlik, a rematch would be fascinating. Taylor fans would have their hands over their eyes every time Pavlik opened up.
I could see either Pavlik walking straight through him and doing the job quicker OR Taylor winning a dull points decision.

LOL, I'm always a miserable bugger after staying up all night anway. Taylor has some beautiful combos, but I just think he needs to combine movement and combos to beat Pavlik. Which Jermain's body - at 160 at least -can't maintain, leaving that chin open in the 2nd half.Terry D wrote:I may have come across as terse last night VM, apologies if that is the case. I hope they don't have an immediate rematch - both guys could actually get ruined. They'll probably have tune-ups and we'll see what kind of shape Jermain's in and hw much he wants another fight with Pavlik.
My big issue was that Taylor wasn't fully proven - holding his own with WW and BH and CS is good, but I saw it as anticlimatic - which made the Reid comparison attractive for me.
I don't think that Taylor has what it takes to beat Pavlik, especially not after this fight. I felt Pavlik clearly won three rounds - the 1st, the 3rd and the 7th of course. If he's fighting a faster man it'll take him longer to play catchup, and I felt he was getting back in the fight in the 6th (some decent jabs) and was dominating the seventh. In round 7 he found his rhythm and was pretty much in control, measuring a tired Taylor.Goz wrote:I wondered if there was a little of Lewis-Rahman about Saturdays fight in that Taylor got tired and Pavlik got lucky?

Taylor was much more tired than Pavlik - who'd had the shit beaten out of him in rd 2 - and it showed after 6 rds where it really counted.
Technically, Pavlik may be a tad underrated - he has a very good arsenal. When he gets the shots going, some of them are beautiful punches.
I'm glad pavlik won. I hope Kessler beats Calzaghe. That way I believe lots more major fights will happen.

No one will bother with Kessler if he wins. He doesn't have the name appeal. I can't see BHOPs or Pavlik fighting him. Winky will probably look for Pavlik at 160. Maybe if Taylor has nowhere else to go he'll fight KesslerAutobarn wrote: I'm glad pavlik won. I hope Kessler beats Calzaghe. That way I believe lots more major fights will happen.
I see it the opposite - HBO offered him a contract (which he turned down). I think ppl will admire Kessler's skills and achievements. If he beats Calzaghe, it may be terribly exciting and with his good looks and personality (he went on ESPN's boxing program and showed some humour an dpersonality) there should be plenty for him. Also, Yanks aren't that keen on Joe, even if they show grudging respect, and I think they'd like a replacement guy who shows he wants to go after good fights.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:No one will bother with Kessler if he wins. Reckon it's curtains for Winky. If he goes down in weight too far, he's going to get beaten up. He's not won his last 2 big fights and it's all downhill. He's made a joke of himself saying he'd go down to 147 for DLH.
I just remembered, Pavlik has won three times this year - won 2 WBC elims and then the WBO/WBO belts. If he can squeeze in a tune up style title defense like Duddy, I'd be mightily impressed & it's be good for his weihgt making. Your bird has a point on Pav's size - he's too big for 160 and the only way he can keep weight down is by fighting regular. Thankfully, Arum was saying months ago that they would be busy, and that they wanted to go at it Toney-style with non-title fights poss on network TV (also conveniently getting Pav's face around more homes). Maybe they can go to Monte Carlo next as well!An immediate rematch should be Ok for both guys. I hope Pavlik does not make one of the mistakes Taylor made in fighting twice, max, per year as a Champion. Fighting more often keeps weight down, skills up and keeps you in the gym.
Pavlik was no way ahead - only nutcases can claim that. My big thing is that I feel he would have owned the late rds if he hadn't scored the KO. But he was 3 rds behind as I saw it...I kept falling asleep during the Berto fight. Andre looks very talented but too eager to please and not too smart.

I think what HBO want will also be a factor. Do they want to go straight in with another great fight? That seems more to be Showtime's way of doing things (Marquez-Vazquez, Corrales-Castillo). HBO like to build stars and I think after 3 consecutive KOs on HBO in 1 year that Pavlik is their man-of-the-moment.
DiBella could enforce the immediate rematch, but what if HBO don't give them a date, for instance? Would be interesting to see who gives...I think HBO will be very open to the interests of Arum for the moment.

definitely would make some PPV $. Also, with it being up at 168, Pavlik has nothing to lose if it goes ahead. Personally, I think he'd be a monster at 168 - he does not loo healthy at 160 - and that he'd do Taylor again.nickd wrote:I think HBO would jump at a rematch, the first fight was awesome they could make some decent PPV $ from a rematch.

I've never been much of a Taylor fan since he won the title, but I did feel a bit sorry for him losing his title, after really trying to turn things around and putting in the most exciting performance of his career.
He could easily have have had a sensational win in the 2nd - there's more than a few refs who would have jumped in there. Brings home the point that a few seconds can change a career.
That right hand bomb Pavlic landed reminded me of that famous shot of Marciano landing a crunching right hand: Taylor's face changed shape on the slo mo replay. He showed a great chin to stay on his feet after that.
But KP is a world class finisher alright.
I wouldn't right off Taylor in a rematch too quickly, as long as he's not too shattered by the defeat. He looked pretty lethal in the opening couple of rounds, and if he'd kept his head a bit, would have surely finished Pavlic.
Pavlic deserves it all though, he's got balls of steel.
