Didn't Earnie Shavers put Ali down too? A case can be made that Frazier knocked Ali down twice in their first fight. One was ruled a slip, but many say, including Ferdie Pacheco, that Ali took a left and went down after a second delay. Because water was there, they called it a slip. I think Wepner stepped on Ali's foot to assist in his knockdown, but that's the way it goes!

Ali credits the fact that he'd been down, been in trouble, been rocked, as a crucial advantage when he fought Foreman. He said he'd "been somewhere George hadn't," and knew how to handle it. While it was stupid to do, Ali also said he let guys hit him in the gym so he could practice operating in the "world of the half-dream," as he called it.

How many times was Leonard floored during his prime years - say up untill Hagler. I believe it is only the once (against Howard), why isn't he mentioned with the punchers he faced is beyond me.

I think in his biggest fights during these periods only Duran temporarily hurt him once.

Yes, he stayed in the game to long and his chin was a notable thing that went. I mean he went down in 4 of his last 5 fights. That has obviously tarnished his reputation a bit - but surely a canditate in his pomp.

earnie shaver didn't put ali down, but one right hand he hit him with was so hard the vibration damn near broke my tv set. and he landed a few other explosions too.

which brings up a point about knockdowns. wepner has that official knockdown over ali...a body punch was ali was backing up and a little off balance. not damaging at all...not nearly so much as the punches by shaver. someitmes a knock down, even a clean "to the jaw" one isna't as damaging as those the fighter takes and stays on his feet. ron lyle hit ali with a few pips, for example, but didn't put ali down.

the knockdowns hearns scored over leonard in the second fight look more like semi-harmless shoves...not nearly as hard as some of the right hands hearns landed all through the fight.

joe louis...up to the marciano fight always claimed nobody hit him harder than max baer...including schemling...yet baer didn't put him down..though of course a few others did.

abe simon, who knocked jersey joe walcott out..and was stopped twice by louis..and took a real beating in the second fight...for the rest of his life always said nobody hit him harder than walcott...."i never felt a sock like that one" was the way he usuallly described it.

In my opinion Jake LaMotta had the greatest chin of all times very closely followed by Hagler (He got kinda semi hurt by Hearns in the first round but apart from that I don't think he ever was effected by a punch!)
I think that Muhammad Ali has the best chins of the heaveyweights, unbelievable that he was able to get up on the count of 3 after that hook by Joe Frazier in their first fight.
