Khan, an olympic silver, at 135, 14-0. They are billing him as a world champ.

Compare his record to another 14-0 olympian at 147 and see the difference in the standard of boxing

Impressive performance from Khan. He looked very strong, put his punches together well and was too quick and heavy handed for Lawton. However, he did what one would expect of a prospective world class fighter against a domestic level.

I think he now ready for a stiffer test against a fighter that will be take him into later rounds to see how his form holds.

I still think he is vulnerable defensively but that aside it was a very good win.

The thing that impressed me the most was while he was throughing those uppercuts he had his hand on his face. Seems to be learning. Wofuly one sided for me though.

I really don't think Khan learned anything from tonight's fight and neither did we. I don't think Lawton turned up with any ambition tonight. It's got to be Earl or Thaxton next. Then we might find out a bit more.

James, I think you are as unimpresed with Mugabi, as I am impresed with him?

Would an honorable defeat to Michael Katsidis or Yuri Ramonev stand Khan in good stead for his career.

He won't beat those fighters just yet though, and it beat pissing on fighters like Lawton, Earl and Limond.

I didnt realise we were talking about RIGHT NOW.... IMO beating Earl would be on a par with getting spanked by Katsidis.

What a great counter that was by Pryce! fantastic shot

Terry D wrote:He looked good tonight. Surprised Lawton ditched the jab, or was unable to use it, as he landed it a few times when he let it go. It was his best defence and he was a sitting target without it.

I think Khan will be better if he ditches 5-6 shot flurries, as he did in this fight. Why not throw 1-2-3 then take a step to the side and throw another trio. Same amount of shots but he gets to switch the angles and avoid a straight shot coming his way.

Oliver has him doing this and it seems his style is settling down a little bit in every few fights or so.

Flurrying against Earl could allow Earl to swing one in so I hope he picks his shots from now on. James Toney used hand speed and steps between combos well in his best bouts.
I think you're spot on with all of this Terry, particularly with regards to the 5-6 shot flurries, as it's the one time where he does still appear to square up with his chin hanging out. Against someone who can time him coming in he could easily get clocked... bad habit from the amateurs that they need to erase.

Well, not quite idolise, but he was a terrific fighter, and great fun to watch.

My point is that there's nothing spectacular about that list of opponents. Mugabi was rightly called the beast and was as murderous a puncher as I've ever seen, but he wasn't fighting anyone special in his first 14 fights.

Now JUST now, but within his next three fights. I don't think Kasidis would spank Khan but I don't think Khan would be Katsidis.

If Katsidis can stop Earl, he can stop Khan, if Limond put Khan on Judah-legs, then Katsidis can rock him for sure

You're right, Khan's tendency to throw quick flurries coming forward carries his momentum right into his opponents range and opens him up for short counters. Against an opponent who can dig, Khan will have to come through a some sticky moments.

Personally I don't like Khan's inability to hold his feet and dominate a fight at his range when he has such fast hands. His forward momentum seems always end up on top off his opponent either crowding his own work or allowing counters. Let's hope this gets ironed out. There was certainly less of that tonight, but it was still there.

Usually, I would bow to your superior knowledge, but as I have seen every single pro and olympic fight of mugabi, I will beg to differ here.

Roosevelt Green 3 times chicago golden gloves champ, doug demmings and curtis ramsey were all better than any of khans opponents. Ask Mighty Warrior, Bennie, Ian McNeilly, or Steve Farhood. Mugabi sparked them all.

Surely, P4P Mugabi would have hammered Khan at the same stage.
