2007 National Pal
Got a phone call from my husband, who is officiating this week. He was at weigh-ins this morning and read me the bout sheet. Lots of JOs and boxing tonight (only 1 session) are Dominique Dolton, Jamal James, Oscar Molina, Gary Allen Russell. Mostly California boxers, with a smattering from back east and a good contingent from Texas.
Julie Goldsticker will not be there but said she'll post any results she gets from Oxnard. I also offered to post results on my web site. Rick will be getting the results and sending them to me (he said tonight).
I'll try and keep everyone updated, as best I can.

I have the results from Monday night but won't be able to post them until tonight. Sorry - but work really does interfer with boxing!!!!!
However - the open boxers there are, whose names we recognize, are: Duran Caferro, Domonique Dolton, Jamal James, Juan Leija, J'Leon Love, Oscar Molina, Shawn Nichol, Gino & Louie Padilla, Shemuel Pagan, Gary Allen Russell, Gabino Saenz, , Leandre White. Others I have never head of. I do have the list, so if you want to know about anyone, ask me and I'll see if they are there. No Jeremy Bryan.

Mel, any word on how Oscar Molina's attempt to make the Mexican Olympic team is going ? I wonder if two brothers have ever boxed in the same Olympics for different countries ?

Roberto Luna
Oscar's trainer Roberto Luna said Oscar was going to try and make the Olympic team. Here is the link to that story.

Mexico picks who it wants. If there is someone they think they might want, they have a box-off between the two and if their guy looks better during the bout, he wins. Many of the US boxers who are citizens, and non-citizens, have tried to make the Mexican team throughout the years and very few actually do. In 2004, the only US boxer was George Garcia from Arizona and he didn't qualify for the Olympics.
Mexico sponsored a "Copa Azteca" tournament in 2004 in Los Angeles. The purpose was to give U.S. citizens of Mexican descent who didn't make the U.S. team a chance to box for Mexico. The winners were all invited to Mexico, where they were used as sparring partners. I think Garcia was in that, but I can't remember (and can't find the results).
Do you have any names of the "a lot of US boxers?"

well
it has been at one point or another that jesus mendez, gerardo ibarra, joshua garza, jessie vargas & oscar molina are "going to try to make the olympic team" ... but when i ask what determines if a certain athlete makes it or not i have been unable to get a straight answer. thats why i was wondering how mexico picks an olympic team. You can't really find out much about mexico amateur boxing on the internet or anything. or at least i havent been able to.
