From the USA Boxing website:

FOUR U.S. BOXERS ADVANCE TO FINAL ROUND ACTION AT THE 2007 WOMEN'S PAN AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Four U.S. boxers have moved on to the championship round at the 2007 Women’s Pan American Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Defending champions, flyweight Cheryl Houlihan (Norton, Mass.) and middleweight Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) will compete for their second straight gold medals on Monday night. 2006 Women’s World Championships light flyweight bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas and 2005 Women’s World Championships light heavyweight bronze medalist Tyler Lord-Wilder (Lansing, Mich.) join Crews and Houlihan in final round action as well.
Esparza was too young to compete in the 2006 edition and Lord-Wilder won the 2005 event unopposed. Heavyweight Anne Gibbon (Odenton, Md.) will won the heavyweight championship unopposed.

Too bad Anne Gibbon didn't get a bout. That sucks to go to camp for two weeks, travel for a week to the tournament and not get a bout.

Too bad they're not getting the actual tournament results. I searched the web today and didn't find anything. The AIBA web site might have the total results eventually.

Thanks much, localbox - you're better at surfing the web than I am! What does (EE.UU) mean? And I tried to get to the Eucador link and it isn't working.

amy wrote:There were a lot of RSCs in the finals. Anyone know what the experience of some of these international girls are compared to the girls from the US?

My guess is that their experience is not very much. Even the Caribbean men do not have much experience. Boxing is just not that big in most countries in the Americas. I would bet that most of the boxers besides US, Canada and Argentina have less than 10 bouts total.

Many of the South American countries were slow to allow their women to box. I can't remember if Mexico still doesn't (I'll look it up). Canada started their women's amateur boxing program 6 years before the U.S started in 1994. The rest of the continent trickled in much later.

Canada has been dominant since the women started competing internationally. That doesn't seem to change. 8)
