Frank Bruno Vs George Foreman 1991

Post by Robinson »

Say after the Foreman-Holyfield fight that big George and Bruno's path met and both men face of to validate there positions in the title picture.

How do you see this fight going and which of these two big men win it.

Bruno builds a lead on points, then runs out of gas in about 9 or 10 rounds, and Foreman then KOs or TKOs him

That's the obvious scenario, but Bruno could take single shots OK, he was just susceptible to combos and good finishers. Look at all his defeats - he was battered to the floor by a sustained burst rather than single shots (even if single shots were sometimes the catalyst for the fight-ending barrage, as in the Lewis fight).

The question is, what would happen if Foreman landed a huge single blow. Would that in itself be enough to KO Bruno? If not, did the 1991 Foreman have enough speed/reflexes to open up effectively and get Bruno out of there?

I think Foreman got a close-ish decision based on a couple of knockdowns which Bruno got up from and recovered from; perhaps something like the Alex Stewart fight.

Good match, either Frank gets busted up and stopped in about 8 if he's aggressive or if he boxes like he did against McCall then he could conceivably win a decision.

I agree on Bruno. Did Bruno ever recover from a knockdown though?

I would say though, as you point out, the Lewis and Smith KOs were basically one punch knockouts, as after those shots the follow-up was just icing on the cake.

Not exactly, although he was everything BUT knocked down against Jumbo Cummings. In fact, he was so sparked, his brain couldn't even process the command to lie down!

What I love about that shot from Cummings is that Bruno's reaction is like a character in a Warner Bros cartoon who has just been hit by a falling anvil.

Nice one. I reckon similar to Foreman vs. Moorer a few years later.

Bruno wins a close fight by out-jabbing the big lumbering Foreman. If Alex Stewart can hold off Big George and bust him up, what could a more superior fighter with a better jab in Bruno do? As someone said Bruno can take a punch but he just didnt know what to do when he was in trouble and old Foreman was no combination puncher.

I would have liked to see this fight I like Bruno and think he could have beaten Foreman in 91 if he like Razor said could keep Foreman away with the jab, ofcourse Foreman has the punchers chance like he did aginst moorer but i still favour Bruno by decision.
