Archie Moore Vs Sugar Ray Robinson

Post by Robinson »

Lets say that these two legends met some time during the mid 1950s. Robinson fighting as a LHW or as a 'SHW' and Archie as a 175lber.

Who do you think wins this fight should they both met at this time ?

..robinson could never have been a full fledged light heavy..and at this stage of their careers archie would have been to strong for him and too hard a puncher. srr went after the crown when maxim had it because maxim wasn't a puncher. regardless of how one feels about the heat situation in their match....official cards show the sugar man just had to stay on his feet until the end and he would have won.....i do think robinson underestimated maxim's physical strength. he was very strong...and in this one he let robinson try to wrestle him in the clinches. if you watch the fight you can see the great phsical effort robinson was doing when in there, and all maxim had to do was hold him. i felt as i watched it live that if sugar ray had just gone limp in the clinches instead of trying to pull loose or push maxim he would have done okay....and this was while the fight was going on....not 20/20 vision after it ended.

back to archie....ray had the speed,a nd he actually rocked the iron chinned maxim a few times...but i think the mongoose probably would have kayoed him. there is one other guy at least who held the same opinion...and that was...tah dah!..sugar ray robinson!

As everyone knows I'm not much of an Archie Moore fan, but in this particular case I'd probably go with Archie by KO unless SRR simply wanted to make it to the end of the fight which he certainly had the skills to do.

Sorry I meant 'SMW' not 'SHW'

I really think this can only go one way. I can't see any possible scenario at 175lbs where Robinson can hang with Moore.

Keep in mind Moore is not just dramatically bigger. He's not just any old LHW. He's probably #2 all-time in a weightclass that has produced many fantastic champions (Ezzard Charles, Bob Foster, Billy Conn, Michael Moorer, Gene Tunney etc.)

Moore in a sledgehammer knockout, probably mid-rounds.

Robinson learned against Maxim that he had no KO punch against a top level 175 pounder.

That's why they have weight classes in boxing.
