i remember the FACE TO FACE progs with roy plumley entering this territory.
Thats been going on for years. In the 1970s Eric Clapton said he supported the National Front on stage and every interview since then the contract has said the interviewer isn't allowed to ask him about it. fornicating arsehol steels all his music from black people and then says keep brition white I'd love to punch him in his mediochr guitar playing face... rant over

What unlike before when he looked really cool?

He's got the worst dress sense and taste since Timmy Mallet.

The original Face To Face with John Freeman exemplifies TV interviewing at its very best. His interviews with Gilbert Harding and Tony Hancock - household names at the time - were genuinely probing and consequently moving discussions which coaxed previously unkown revelations from the interviewee. It was the complete antithesis of the interviewee-controlled garbage we have now.

This occurred at a time when his addictions to drugs and alcohol were at their peak. That is, of course, no excuse, as those beliefs must have been deep-seated in his addled mind. The phrase "in vino veritas" can be applied to this outburst and I don't know how he can reconcile his plagiarising of black music and befriending of black blues legends with the racist views.

Comparitivly, BB King, Jeff Beck Jimi Hendrix are all better than him in my opinion and they were within his era. The people he was happy to steal riffs from and didn't want in the UK were certainly better (King, Robert Johnson etc)

I'd find it more paletable if he'd wasn't trying to cover it up. If he did a hacknied appoligy on TV or if he allowed people to mention it and said I was young and stupid it was unnacceptible, but the fact he keeps it quiet show's he isn't willing to appoligise.

BB King! How can you compare King, a straight blues man to Clapton, that's just plain ridiculous. Whatever Clapton's politics, or bigotry, he's a fekking brilliant guitarist.

Being inferior to Hendrix....so what, name one guitarist who isn't....

hmm, lots of subjects here to get my teeth into!
1. i was wrong, chesh, and you were right; it was not plumley who did FACE TO FACE it was john freeman. roy may have produced the show or directed it or something.
2. clapton is a great guitarist - and i'm no slouch - but hendrix is the greatest electric guitarist of them all. jeff beck runs him very close though and is arguably more inventive because his progress has been constant up till today whereas jimi was finding himself trapped musically at the time of his death. the racist thing? well, even I an old socialist, have vented frustration at the 3 party system by saying stupid idiotic things like eric did now and then. plus, he was off his nut on drink and drugs at the time.
3. putin has been very bad for russia and its surrounding nations. i hope he goes soon.
4. who is the biggest twat - jonathon ross or ben elton?

Harry, my answer to 4. would be Ben Elton, but only just! And regarding guitarists, I agree with what you say about Hendrix and Beck. Jeff Beck appeared at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2004 and reportedly stole the show. I've got the double DVD, but for some mysterious reason he's not on it! I'll forgive Clapton anything, though, as he recently made a great album with one of my favourite guitarist/songwriters, JJ Cale. He's the guy that wrote "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" which Clapton made famous. Their joint album's called "The Road To Escondido" and is well worth checking out.

Terry D wrote:Jimi did get some good stuff with the Band of Gypsies and the Fillmore set was a stonker, he was on the up before he got killed by the downers. Granted he was getting bored by the music he had produced but there was a rumour of an album with Miles Davis. I think Miles' wife was a big Jimi fan, perhaps that is why Miles why so creative, and hoped the two would work together. Certainly elements of 'Bitches Brew' and 'Jack Johnson' were Jimi receptive.
Before his death, Jimi had, I think, just started to do some work with Miles Davis' brilliant former collaborator/arranger Gil Evans (he was the arranger on "Sketches Of Spain", amongst others). Evans later went on to do a jazz orchestra tribute album to Hendrix. You've got me wanting to dig out my old vinyl copy of "Bitches' Brew" now. I think Hendrix was definitely heading in a jazz fusion direction and a collaboration with Davis and Evans would have been really something.

Terry D wrote:Gil Evans did a Jimi jazz album of covers. It is pretty awesome actually. I have it on CD with extra tracks and an essay on Jimi/jazz.
A classic Evans one I have on CD has the brilliant title "Svengali" - an anagram of Gil Evans. I'm going to sound very old now, but I saw the Gil Evans Orchestra live at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in 1976!

i have always though jimi should have explored jazz playing more than he did. there is some stuff on electric ladyland that is jazzy and its really good. technically he could have done it but i think his heart was somewhere else. i'll put forward this suggestion; technically as a player he would have been ok going the jazz fusion route but i think as a writer it would not have suited him and i dont think he could reconcile the two strands of creativity. jeff - so versatile, so open-minded, managed it. but jimi...

claptons best playing is on the beatles "while my guitar gently weeps"
long long single note phrases of great emotional depth. i'll take that kind of playing over flashy supersonic flurries anyday.

Didn't know that was Clapton. Love that song, love most of what the beatles did, great band with a unique sound, and so many great songs.

That was on TV, on a show hosted by Lulu. Jimi was doing "Hey Joe" and suddenly stopped part way through and said something like "Let's stop playing this rubbish" and went into "Sunshine Of Your Love". Poor Lulu looked petrified, as I think it was live TV.
