Ever Hammer corrections

Post by surf-bat »

You have the following fight between Ever Hammer and Eddie Gordon listed as a draw from the Milwaukee papers. The papers from the town(Racine Journal News and Racine Daily Times) where the fight actually happened have it differently:

Racine Daily Times 3/7/1914: "Gordon tried to vindicate himself for the knockout about two months ago at the hands of Ever Hammer. He went at Ever with the express purpose of disposing of him in the early rounds. The Chicago boy took a bad beating in these rounds, but then came back in his bearcat style and roughed it with Gordon, knocking him down three times, and having him in such distress in a number of instances that the bell was the only thing that saved him."

also the Hammer/Wolgast bout(which you erroniously have as a draw):

Racine Times Call 4/1/1916: "It was a slam-bang affair from start to finish, with Hammer constantly boring in and taking the aggressive and Wolgast gamely fighting back, using every trick and every bit of ring generalship which he had learned in the 150 or more battles which he has fought. Wolgast's ring generalship was superb, but Hammer's youth and enthusiasm was too much for the old-timer, who was rushed off his feet by the Swede's onslaughts and slammed against the ropes time and again."

The Racine Journal News concurs with the above. Their reports should outweigh anything the Milwaukee papers say. Neither fight was a draw, but wins for Hammer.

Hope this helps set the record straigh. Best regards!
