Michael Hunter
Michael Hunter
What happening with him?
Hope he hasn't been on the sauce again, he said he hit it pretty bad after the defeat to Molitor. What a comeback opponent for Brodie.
By the way is Brodie training with Anthony Farnell or Bobby Rimmer? I'm presuming Jack Trickett isn't involved with him anymore?
I head Trickett had signed up David Barnes but not sure whats going on there. Wasn't Barnes supposed to be with Hobson?

looked a bit like Ricky Hatton looks between fights I thought, face-wise.
However he seems to be talking a good fight still. I'm sure there must be another go in Hunter, he has given too much to the sport to go out on the back of one failed world title crack......it's not as though he got beaten up or anything, he was just a bit outclassed on the night.

how does Michael go from Lonsdale belt outright, Commonwealth champ, European champ with 1, 2, 3 defences, and a respectable enough tilt at the IBF against a seemingly flawless oppo in Molitor (he chose to box a boxer that night when perhaps a tear-up would have been the sensible (sic) option.......to being "potentially in some good DOMESTIC match ups".......
I do KIND of see where you're coming from...higher weight etc...and one really doesn't know what he can do until he fights at the weight....but I think he will see his aspirations as higher than domestic.

Interesting you should mention that, NEBox. I was thinking the same thing, and that got me remembering Paul Lloyd, who kind of hit a ceiling after getting the Brit/Commonwealth/Euro trifecta.NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:how does Michael go from Lonsdale belt outright, Commonwealth champ, European champ with 1, 2, 3 defences, and a respectable enough tilt at the IBF against a seemingly flawless oppo in Molitor (he chose to box a boxer that night when perhaps a tear-up would have been the sensible (sic) option.......to being "potentially in some good DOMESTIC match ups".......

It is odd though, innit, that some guys get to the top in Europe/Britain for a time, and then it all goes awry after not succeeding at world level, whereas some seem able to bounce back and make another go of it.
I wonder (speaking in general here, no names no pack-drill) if it's a motivational thing, a kind of "I've climbed the bloody mountain, fell off near the top & now I cannae be bothered to get the rope out again" sort of thing.
Time will tell in Michael's case, I suppose, but interesting...
Controversial one this mate - do you think Michael quit against Molitor?NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:how does Michael go from Lonsdale belt outright, Commonwealth champ, European champ with 1, 2, 3 defences, and a respectable enough tilt at the IBF against a seemingly flawless oppo in Molitor (he chose to box a boxer that night when perhaps a tear-up would have been the sensible (sic) option.......to being "potentially in some good DOMESTIC match ups".......

Depends on our definitions of the word quit doesn't it. But for me the answer is NO. If Hunter was a quitter he could have quit against Pickering in round 2, or against Payne for the Brit title, or against Guartos who tried to blow Hunter away in 3 rounds for the Euro title before running out of steam.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Controversial one this mate - do you think Michael quit against Molitor?NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:how does Michael go from Lonsdale belt outright, Commonwealth champ, European champ with 1, 2, 3 defences, and a respectable enough tilt at the IBF against a seemingly flawless oppo in Molitor (he chose to box a boxer that night when perhaps a tear-up would have been the sensible (sic) option.......to being "potentially in some good DOMESTIC match ups".......

In my opinion Hunter knew he was beat and it was just too late in the fight to change the pattern of the fight, if he'd come out blazing away from the start then maybe it would have been different but Hunter had obviously decided prior that he was going to box Molitor, which possibly was his undoing.
I can see, having been there and watched the tape a few times, why people would ask that question, but quit is not an appropriate word for a warrior like Michael. He was beaten and knew it, had he had a chance of winning he would have gone for it I have no doubt.
That's why I was so surprised - he had been in some bad places before, especially against Pickering, and kept blazing away. Yes, I believe he knew he was beaten but thought he might have gone out on his shield. I believe, perhaps like you, he could have gone on but thought better of it.NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:Depends on our definitions of the word quit doesn't it. But for me the answer is NO. firstly, excellent as he, Pickering is no Molitor.
secondly, as bad as they looked at the time, the knockdowns against Pickering (from the tapes) seemed more flash knockdowns to me which, whilst fairly powerful, had as much effect due to the element of surprise as well as the fact they came very early on in the fight.
Molitor's shots, especially the one to the forehead of Michael were thrown with far more venom.
I always look out for Molitor's results now in various locations around the world as he's looking unbeatable at the moment.

I dont like to use the word "quitter" about any fighter but Hunter did pretty much fulfill the definiton of it against Molitor. All the more surprising given his fight with Pickering. Maybe it was a confidence thing and he ust felt like he couldn't do anything with Molitor.Des1 wrote:Yes, Hunter quit againts Molitor. He was on his knee and shook his head as the ref was finishing his count
Still some cracking fights out there for him though.
He knew he was a beat man, why go on and take more punishment? Hunter was not taking much punishment, his fans had come to watch him try to win a World title and he put in a dire showing. Taking a certain amount of punishment in pursuit of the title was his duty, and he failed.Razor wrote:He knew he was a beat man, why go on and take more punishment?
