I do understand the concern, if someone told me it was McCullough-Vasquez/Ponce de Leo/ Marquez I would be screaming that the fight shouldnt happen unless Wayne has proven hes up to it, those guys are fast and punishing..

Martinez is slow as fcuk and i my(yet to be proven) opinion is limited, I have no concern about the fight

And thats from a huge fan..

I think McCullough can maybe weather the early storm and wear Martinez down. We still don't know how good he is or how he copes under pressure which is something Wayne will offer in abundance.

Of course Martinez may just spark him out, i mean the chin has to let him down someday and McCullough isn't getting any younger.

No concern??.... Martinez is exactly the sort of guy who could give Wayne a slow and brutal beating for 10 rounds or so, at least if he was fighting Delon it would more likely be over early.......

McCullough has been a great servant to the sport but his time is overdue. After reading his autobiography he was bordering on delusion, he had an excuse/secret injury/Cheryl wanted me out of the fight i said no in the locker room type yarn for every loss.

Yes, this is the problem. Athletes are the last to know when to call it quits. At least in say, Athletics, you just don't qualify for any big race meets any more. In boxing your name can get you a fight you simply haven't proven you have any right being in, and the nature of hypercompetitive people is often that they find it very hard to admit that they have simply lost the fight, and instead they grasp at straws and convince themselves that next time it will be different.

To me this is him going out in Belfast, in a winnable fight...If he loses to this guy he retires, mark my words...

I can see this fight turning out like Gattis last one (lets hope it was his last one!!) against Gomez.... which I thought was quite awful and depressing to watch....

Nope, unless he is koed I can see him even if he takes a bad beating, putting it down to inactivity and fighting on if he can. The thing is theres some guys who will just fight on and on till someone either stops them or they cant get paid anymore, .....these are the guys that often end up hurt....

Based on McCullough's win-loss record over the past few years its a disgrace how many opportunities he keeps on getting.

Its not just Wayne who gets the opportunities, Boxing is littered with plenty of cases worse. All you have to do is look at the weekend when Holyfield fought for the WBO title at Heavyweight and McCline for example for the Interim WBC, what had they done to get those cracks?

Waynes fighting a European holder, coming off 2 world title fights one of which he done very well at. Its not like he has landed another world title fight, if Wayne did not fight him, chances are some unknown from France or somewhere would be fighting him for the European belt soon. Its a test for both men as he's never been tested asides blowing Dunne away so we'll see what he's like when he's took rounds by someone who has fought the very best. Like it or lump it, if Wayne is fighting on, fair play to him for getting this fight as I think he has a great chance of winning it if he can produce what he did against Larios in the first fight which is not impossible.

But it doesn't make it right. When was the last time McCullough won? And what's the point of the EBU having ratings when McCullough can simply be allowed to jump the queque and earn yet another ill-deserved pay cheque?

Just because we haven't heard of the majority of the contenders doesn't mean they should be rail roaded to accomodate McCullough. I don't know what irritates me more, the EBU's morality or McCullough's belief that he should be afforded opportunity after opportunity based on his acheivements from over a decade ago.

Bit Vitriolic there Ben...

It does make me wonder how Wayne has got this shot but Boxing is a business, like it or lump it Wayne has got the shot, voluntary defence, its a tale as old as time...

When I say that I want him to fight Molitor, I do mean if he wins this...once again I wouldnt want Wayne jumping in with Molitor straight away, a man who is a known quantity and a guy who style could give ANYONE a sustained beating..

the crux of my argument is that Wayne from Two years ago could have beaten this guy(gut instinct) If he hasnt dropped too much he can win the fight!!

Oh come on, take the rose tinted specs off!... aside from the health worries of this fight, Wayne simply does not deserve another title fight at this point!.... end of story.

He's been living off his name since Naz, he's had beating from Larios and Morales (several) and does not deserve this shot. He's lost a lot lately....

His corner & wife just sat and watched as he took a terrible pounding off Harrison, which is bad news for a fighter like Wayne, who will just keep taking the punches all night long.

A bad match for him this one.

Wheres your evidence that he can win??.... whens the last time he beat even a good Europeon level featherweight???.... I dont see how taking a pasting from Larios over two years ago says that he is going to beat Marttinez now.... the guy will be too young and too strong, much like Harrison was and we know what happened then and that was a few years back!...

My point is that Waynes been put into a dangerous fight that he doesnt 'deserve' and that it is a bad and dangerous fight anyway you look at it. I'm always against guys coming out of inactivity right into a championship fight... they seldom have a happy ending....

I've always found it curious the way his wife is so cool during his fights, especially his latter ones, I'm sure she loves him and everything, perhaps she thinks he's invincible as well, I just hope somewhere down the road she doesnt live to regret allowing Wayne to take so many shots over the years, you'd think at least after the Larios bout she'd be saying 'enoughs enough!'....

Remember, when Wayne fought Larios the first time plenty of people had him winning(including Steve Holdsworth) The Second fight was more one sided but that was at world class!!!

Martinez is in no way a proven quantity but you talk like he is the Tyson of the Super Bantamweights...86 seconds is far too little time to prove what you have...

Im not saying Wayne wins this, im not saying he has earned the shot, but its a winnable fight against an unproven champ..if of course he hasnt regressed...

Hey, wouldnt it be funny that since its in Belfast he got a gift decision..... :TU:

I never brought it that Wayne won the first Larios fight, just as I dont think he beat Zaragozza, Morales or Hamed.... he was very brave and did better against Larios the first time round than people thought he would do, but still took quite a beating even then, and then in their rematch we all know what happened. And to be honest Larios was never a top tier 'world champion' exciting yes, but also rather limited and one dimentional....

I had Larios a draw, Wayne didnt get a shellacking, and at one point had me thinking(and many others) that Larios was gonna quit!!

You say that Larios wasnt a top class wiorld champ..but he was a long reighing title holder..Martinez has proven nothing yet other than he can catch Dunne cold(or Dunnes chinny)

This IS a step down in class, it all depends what Wayne has left, and no-one on here can say what the last 2 years has done to him
