Margarito v Mayorga
Who wins? This has to be one of the potentially best match ups for next year. Perhaps controversially I think Margarito...
Mayorga should win, I liked the look of Margarito against Diaz (who I rated very highly at the time) however I don't think he was at all impressive against China Chinned Lewis.
Having seen Diaz's subsequent fight, its clear that the guy is faded (would still be a tough fighter for the likes of Hatton, Witter and Magee). He recently got stopped by Hector Quiroz in a fight of the year contender, however he stopped Quiroz when he was at his prime a few years back. Lets not forget Diaz was leading on the cards against Magarito prior to the stoppage.
I just the Mayorga will hit to hard and be to quick for Margarito, Ricardo has exceptional stamina and his style is going to cause havoc for years to come.
I would go for Mayroga by late stoppage or points. But, lets not forget Mayorga has a toughy this weekend (a very toughy), I'm predicting a Ricardo victory, but I'm not at all confident with the pick and will be going to the bookies and laying a few pounds on Cory.

Margarito seems to love to hurt people just as much as Mayorga. If there's one big fight next year that's certain to deliver the goods - this is it.
I've never seen Spinks so I can't comment too much on his chances on saturday night but what I do know is if he's the light puncher that his record suggests then he'll have to box like Sugar Ray Leonard to keep Mayorga off him. Is Spinks really that good a boxer?

Margarito is one of the better WBO champions, and holds a stoppage win over that scourge of British fighters, Sergio Martinez. But would he have twice beaten Forrest? I'm not sure he would. And, at the end of the day, the WBO is still the WBO. Pretty naff. Mayorga's fight with Spinks is for all three titles, which gives the winner an edge over everyone.
But is he a good boxer Stu? I've never read anything about Spinks that suggests he does anything particularly special in the ring. And Mayorga is probably a little cleverer than many give him credit for. Surely basic jab & move tactics are not enough to contain this monster no matter how long your arms are.stujones wrote:He's got a nine inch reach advantage, 5 inches more than Forrest!
bennie - if you'd asked me befroe Mayorga-Forrest 1 (and 2 if i'm honest) I'd have said Mayorga COULD NEVER have beaten Forrest at all - never mind KO him and then outpoint him (solidly).bennie wrote:Margarito is one of the better WBO champions. But would he have twice beaten Forrest?
still I agree I'd fancy Mayorga still.
One point about the Mayorga-Spinks bout - Don King has (according to BM) insisted that Emmanuel Steward works with Mayorga for this one bout - so DK obviously thinks this is a tough fight for Mayorga - and DK is a pretty shrewd judge of a fight.

Cory Spinks might have something to say about this, come Saturday.bigfatjourneyman wrote:Who wins? This has to be one of the potentially best match ups for next year. Perhaps controversially I think Margarito...
Good point!!Kilburn wrote: I mean does anyone think that Mayorga was actually taught to fight like that?
The other good point is that Latino tradition dictates that both fighters occupy centre-ring and take turns to try to KO each other - this type of fight will surely favour "El Matador"
PS. Does anyone else appreciate the irony of a fighter that fights like a
paternally enraged bull (on crack), naming himself after the bull-fighter?
(Mayorga apparently points out that "the Matador is the only one left standing at the end" - hence the nickname).

I think Mayorga is gonna have problems with Spinks this weekend. Mayorga could be throwing at air a lot of the times if Spinks boxes from distance.
Steward has been kicked into touch which won't make much of a difference but this is an ugle match up for Mayorga. Could make him look bad if Spinks runs. He'd be better put in with a come forward fighter.

It's great that we're going to see this fight 'live'. Spinks is Spinks. Born with blood in his veins. His father was an animal (think what he did in the '76 Olympics; he stopped the legendary Cuban Sixto Soria to win the gold). And Cory won the title in Italy. He's no mug. But Mayorga hasn't borne comparison to the legendary Roberto Duran for nothing.
Great fight. Great bill. Great night.

Talk about unlucky - he's born 5 days after his Dad becomes heavyweight champion of the world, and he still ends up being brought up broke in a St Louis ghetto, where his brother and best friend are both shot to death.bennie wrote:It's great that we're going to see this fight 'live'. Uncle Mike and Leon are going to be ringside.
Great knowledge, MW. Didn't know Cory was born five days after the Ali win. What a week that was for Leon!MightyWarrior wrote:Talk about unlucky - he's born 5 days after his Dad becomes heavyweight champion of the world, and he still ends up being brought up broke in a St Louis ghetto, where his brother and best friend are both shot to death.bennie wrote:It's great that we're going to see this fight 'live'. Stu Jones has just revealed that William Joppy is a 7/1 outsider against Bernard Hopkins. That's what Spinks was against Ali. Mmmm...

Joppy's stock fell alot after Trinidad flattened him - and I reckon he's better than people see him currently, in the same way I reckon Eastman is better than most think - making Joppy's win a really good one, better prep than Hakkar and co.bennie wrote:[William Joppy is a 7/1 outsider against Bernard Hopkins.
He's tricky and could steal alot of rounds - but BHop is a tricky guy to steal rounds from!
I don't reckon BHop will stop him (although I don't think its out of the question) - so it looks like there could be some interesting scoring to me.
I have a strong feeling he will give (a fading?) BHop more of a tussle than people think and 7/1 seems pretty long to me.
Yet another bout to get pant-wettingly over-excited about.
This is raising a serious problem - which bout(s) do I snooze through?????
(John Ruiz is a fair bet - I haven't lasted too many of his fights!)

Maragarito for all his come forward attributes he has defensive flaws imo, if he marches forward and takes the flush shots he did against Diaz and Lewis from Mayorga then he gets stopped and early. He loves a tearup and so does Mayorga..so lets get it on! Margarito forces the fights well and always looks better when on the outside using his jab but against Diaz he took way to many right hands and left hooks and Mayorga's power would tell. Margarito's stamina is good but he looked open against against Six Heads, defensive frailites will cost him....Mayorga KO7 Margarito.
