Matt Skelton wants to fight Alexander Dimitrenko

Post by Tunney »

Matt Skelton said he's turned down a third fight with Danny Williams, and said he instead wants to fight Alexander Dimitrenko. He also said he will be fighting on the Nov 3 Calzaghe vs. Kessler card, against an unnamed opponent in a "stay active" fight.

Since the McDermott fight in December 2005 Skelton has made no progress whatsoever on the world scene. Williams twice, Sprott and Kalachyan - all of these guys are stay busy fights for anybody with world ambitions. The thoughts of him looking to take on a TBC on the Calzaghe undercard makes me sick. Maybe one of the sanctioning bodies should create a new world title for the elderly and they can let him fight it out with Holyfield for it.

Skelton is mandatory challenger together with Dimitrenko for the vacant EBU title.

It would be better for Dimitrenko if he'd cancel his fight with Timo Hoffmann scheduled for Nov 17, and fight Skelton instead! Beating Hoffman won't elevate Sasha's status (since Timo just lost to Timor Ibragimov) but Matt Skelton would be a good win on Dimitrenko's resume.

"unnamed opponent" and "stay active fight" the mind boggles at that one particularly regarding Skelton. Perhaps Zoltan Petranyi could be invited back over or maybe Radcliffe Green.....is Mitch Green available?

Its sad how Matt has dissapointed in the last couple of years - Had he been younger things may have been different - He entered pro boxing too late in life, I think he is actually 42 now.

Dimetrenko too schooled for Matt IMO, I rate Dimentrenko as highly as Povetkin. He's different to him alot more mechanical - but has his own strengths and a good jab.

Yup. I would have thought the only way Skelton would get a win would be to get at his bullying best and maybe force a stoppage, but whilst I think Dimitrenko may be tagged later in his career I think he'll just be too good to get dragged in by Matt.

And I don't want to turn this into a rant, as Skelton is finally out of the domestic merry-go-round, but I'm not sure I actually give him much more of a chance against Dimitrenko than he would have had against Maskaev. And against Maskaev he would have had a world title shot rather than a European title shot, and a bit longer in his career to start again had he lost.
