Lucien Bute V Alejandro Berrio

Post by steve689 »

Noticed this result off the results page. Bute the new champion, Berro was only ever a gatekeeper i thought until someone decent relieved him of his belt. Some short finishing KO footage below:

Any thoughts?

Very true, he seemed to recover a few seconds after getting stopped and stayed on his feet. He was like "shit i've been stopped but there's nothing i can do!"

Great find Steve - superb clip showing the brutal finish.

The only way to describe Berrio's head in those final moments is 'lolling'..

I was a big Bute fan from early in his pro career - I thought of him as the natural successor to JC and certainly marked him out as being good enough to 'smoke' Froch's boots but now I am not so sure.

His last fight against Bika was full of negativity and maybe that can be put down to the African's strength and awkwardness, but it tempered my belief in the transplated Romanian somewhat.

Will be interesting to see how he develops as a champ. Maybe Froch should look into trying to get him over to the UK - I don't know if Bute has the mental strength/attitude to match his physical assets and skills?

We should have a Froch/Bute eliminator to take on the Calzaghe/Kessler winner really.

Great call! I'm up for that. Bute to be fair has done it the right way thus far, stepping up a little each time and getting his shot the right way.

Yes, if that fight did happen, especially with a world title on the line then I would like Calzaghe (should he beat Kessler) to take the winner on before moving up.

I think the winner of that fight will have just as much as a claim as Kessler for being labelled the "next generation long term champ".

Said it for a while - but they would have to fight each other first.

Remember that Mundine is still (and rightfully so) ahead of both Froch and Bute. But they are for sure doing really well and I hope one of them can get a fight with Mundine to see who is the rightful topcontender.

Mundine has already had a crack at Kessler though and failed. Don't think there'd be much demand for a rematch. Him against Calzahe might be decent though if Calzaghe sticks around to break the defence record.

Is Mundine definately OK now? Last I heard he had a career threatening eye infection, from cleaning his contact lens in his mouth.

I reckon the Supermiddle division is gonna provide some great matches over the next few years, there seem to be a fair few very good fighters reaching their peak Bute, Kessler, Froch, Inkin, Braehmmer, Green, Mundine(?), Lacy, Andrade, Pascal, Ward, Dirrell (Froch beats them all 8) ). I just hope that politics don't stop too many from happening

Froch Vs Bute would be excellent, I seem to remember this getting mandated previously and nothing came of it. Maybe Mick Hennessey can use his Canadian connections to secure Frochy a shot.

When Froch was round my house i started to show him Bute v Bika and when i'd made us all a coffee i came back into the room and he'd changed the channel to eastenders and was talking emphatically about the mitchell sisters.

Mundine's still legally blind though. I think he'd be very tricky, if he gets better, for Calzaghe what with Joe's recent lack of accuracy (flailing would be the word) going with Mundine's defence and clean countering.

I was impressed by Bute. Not the finished article yet, but he started well, woke up in the middle, and from 8 onward totally dominated. he was knocking berrio back with straight lefts over the final 1/3 and the final assault was nasty - he stopped the colombian falling down with a straight left and a left uppercut. terrific stuff and this guy hasn't even peaked yet.

definitely has to snap out a jab (so ppl can't just walk up to him), use a better guard etc but lots of raw talent and i'm pleased that he's turning out to be the fighter i hoped he would (when he obliterated kabary salem).

froch has yet to beat a berrio level top 10, hard hitting super middle.

I don't see why Bute should give Froch a shot at the title. He had the opportunity to fight Bute earlier this year in a title eliminator and he turned it down.

If he wants a shot at the title he most work for it just like Bute did. I have a feeling he much rather get a shot at one of the vacant titles that Calzaghe or Kessler will drop when they move to 175lbs.

We've had this debate on here a few times and it was Bute who didn't fancy it. I reckon they'll meet soon enough though as they're both class acts and will be around the top of the SM division for a few years

Theres not much difference in the standard of opposition between Bute and Froch, so I don't understand the 'he must work for a title shot', with the exception of Bika (who is no greet shakes anyway IMO) there standard of opposition is comparable.

Bute will be in shock when he feels Froch's power, just look what happened to Tatevosyan 8)

They're both obviously had Tatevosyan. Bute shut him out, Froch blew him away, Bute probably ruined him a bit etc

Froch has had good KO wins over Dodson, Magee, Porras and Tatevosyan

Bute has beaten lots of guys at or near that level, Bika, Salem, Mock, James Obede Toney, etc. Froch certainly hasn't beaten a Berrio-level opponent, though.

There's definitely more sense of purpose with the way Bute's career has moved.

Who really? How's that?

It was quite simple. The IBF asked. Do you want to take part in a title eliminator?

1- Bute: Yes
2- Inkin: No
3- Froch: No
4- Braemer: No
etc...
etc...
etc...
11- Bika: Yes

Are you trying to say Bute said "Sure I'll fight the title eliminator as long as the very scary Froch isnt part of it!!"???

As I remember thats not the way it was depicted (sp) on the debate that was on here.

Bute will get what's coming too him (from Froch) in time, it should be an excellent few years in the SM division.

No one ever proved me wrong. There inst 20 ways to do it.

The IBF has very simple and clear rules on how to make a title elimination bout happen and who is and who's not eligible.

Froch and his team has tried to say that they were not contacted because they had a fight schedule which made them unavailable. But it's a load of crap. Bute and Bika also had fights schedules and they we both contacted. Like Inkin, Braehmer and all the other contenders outside of Beyer who wasn't eligible because he had lost his last fight.

The rules says you can't fight until the title eliminator. Bute accepted to cancel his fight. Froch refused to cancel his fight. Therefor he couldn't take part in the title eliminator.

Now why is that? You decided.

But refusing to fight a guy and then talk trash about him afterward doesn't show a lot of intelligence.

I think Bute has the skills & the ring education to do it, but Froch isn't garbage.

He's not only beaten, but KO'd, good comp like Tony Dodson, Brian Magee - I never had Magee ahead - and Tatevosyan, who he decimated.

He messes about, drops his guard and does give the other guy opportunities. But then again Bute goes through quiet spells, see rds 4-7 vs Berrio and rds 1-4 vs Bika, not to mention letting Tatevosyan off the hook.

Lacy was a good fighter but may have got ruined. Froch fights nothing like Lacy. He likes to draw opponents on to a right uppercut counter. Since when could "Left Hook" do that?

I watched Bute-Berrio in full last night and overall i was impressed with Bute, other than brief clips it's the first time i have seen him in a full contest. He was quite loose and languid and put his punches together well, particularly the right hook and straight left off the jab.

However, he is not infallible. When he is tagged and/or stunned he moves back in straight lines, hands down by his waist, chin dangling in mid air. Berrio is a solid, sound fighter but lacks the technical skills of some of his peers. If Bute moves back in straight lines with his chin hanging out to dry against Froch, he would be literally hanging out to dry on the ropes, KO'd.

I expect Bute will get an easy one as a first defence next, unless someone is lined up for him. He can certainly sell a ticket or two, the stadium looked packed.
