From what I heard, Tarver tried to rest on his laurels, and arrogance, and didn't do much of anything to win in the Olympics. He was a prima donna - a boxer that no coach wanted on an international event team. He demanded to be treated differently than any other boxer and was not well liked or respected.

I'd say Tarver was a bit lucky to win the 1995 Worlds and yes, he could've won the Jirov fight at the Olympics which was very close.
Tarver has an incredible 1995: gold at the US Championship, gold at the Pan Am Games, gold at the World Championships, winner of the World Championship Challenge.
But really, he wasn't any star outside of the US. His fights were mostly boring.
