It most certainly is, as is nearly all exercise. Keeping fit & training gives you a great mental 'high'. Knowing that you're fit, healthy, strong etc, that's a buzz in itself.
I love to run, train etc. I do not smoke & very rarely drink alcohol. When having a drink, it's doesn't take much for me to get pissed, as my body is not used to alcohol. In fact, my favourite alcohlic drink is a shandy!
I hope Scott Harrison gets back on the right path. However, it does seem he's in a denail a bit. If he believes the people he tells it was all about weight-making & not alcohol will believe him, then he must be stupid. We all know Harrison has a problem. I hope he addresses the problem soon, because if he chooses not to, then at some stage, sooner or later, he could be back drinking again.
Good to hear he's not had a drink for seven weeks. Long may it continue. What smart arse brought in 24-hr drinking in England?
Sounds like a good bloke! LOL.MightyWarrior wrote:His wife will go to visit the relatives for a few days, he'll see her off bright eyed and bushy tailed, sober as a judge for the last three months.
She'll get back, and find a mountain of empty bottles and he's bollock naked and trying to teach the dogs to swim in the neighbours pool

Regardless of how big the problems are that Scott still faces - drink, finince and crime-wise, I have to say that for me it was only a positive thing that he appeared in a gym this week, with his Dad at his side. And I have to say I thought he looked in pretty decent nick.
If he comes back into the ring again and loses he'll no doubt be written off (again?) And if he's seen in a pub pissed before or after, he'll no doubt be written off again - maybe with good reason.
But whether he's kidding himself he's off the drink or not, I'm quite heartened that he's suddenly turned up, with his head alledgedly screwed on. Hope to see him in the ring soon.

I really hope Harrison can turn things around.
I suffered with depression last year, having never been through anything like that before. It was horrendous and it's frightening how quickly you can go downhill, and to see how close you are to losing everything. I don't drink or do drugs but having been through that can see how people would turn to them. Of course that only makes things worse - it's tough enough to come through depression without having to quit drugs / drink as well.
It takes real character to go through something like Harrison has been through and to come out of it at the the other end so I'm right behind him.

I think that with a lot of sportspeople it's the competition that motivates them to train. Once that is gone it can be hard to exercise just to stay in shape.Captain Hook wrote:It astounds me how such a vain man could let himself go so much at such a young age.
I imagine it would be even harder with millions of pounds in the bank, although personally I agree that once he started turning into a porker you would have thought some level of pride would have kicked in and gotten his backside into gear.
I wholly agree with ur post, except for the 24 hour drinking bit.Rocky Balboa wrote:Coco wrote:Running is great for the mind, prob even better than it is for the body

It was brought in to reduce binge drinking and people spilling on the street at the same time, I believe this policy has made things better rather than worse

I used to rent out some property I had back in the eighties to nurses working in mental health care - One night I got a call from the house next door complaining they were being noisy - "What is it music, slamming doors" I asked - "No, they are laughing loudly" was the reply - I told the man if you dont laugh the job will get to you, and politely told him to bugger off - Not a lot to do with boxing just something that crossed my mind with the subject of mental health being discussed.

Too many idiots in Glasgow who know only too well about his problems but will get him back in the pubs and clubs and then more drinking and more trouble - Best to stay well away from the so called mates and the late night city life - Yes its a great city and has some of the nicest people you could ever meet - If it didnt have pubs and clubs, there would be no problem for Scott but obviously it does and just one night out and the comeback is over.KO Artist wrote:I agree, but whats wrong with Glasgow, Martin, always been a great city.MTG wrote:harrison will be back but i think he will need to stay away from glasgow to keep a clean head but he will be back and i reckon he can and will get back to world class fights.

Have any of you guys who have been open on here about your drinking ever had a liver function test? I mean how much would you have to be drinking for your liver to be in a poor way?, could the BBBoC give Harrison a liver function test? wouldn't that help him get his licence back and convince them, dosnt the liver regenerate itself when you leave it alone from booze or could the damage be to far gone? Im sure it cant be as he was fit and able to train hard up to not long ago.

The liver cannot regenerate itself, once the damage is done, its done - After detox most people are able to live a normal life as long as they dont drink alcohol - If the damage is severe then thats another matter - Lets not forget the brain either, too much alcohol over too many years leaves you puddled and the brain is another organ that cant repair itself - Thats the risk alcoholics take but the next drink is more important than the long term affects on their organs - The fight Scott lost I understand was due to him being on the piss the night before the fight and chucking up in his dressing room minutes before going in the ring - Obviously the man does have a level of liver damage but without the alcohol, his liver may be funtioning pretty well - If it wasnt he wouldnt be able to cope with the training - If he gave up now and never returned to it he could likely live a long life but if he doesnt do so he could die of liver failure in his 40s or 50s.Des1 wrote:Have any of you guys who have been open on here about your drinking ever had a liver function test? The liver can regenerate itself to a certain degree but it depends on the damage done, the fact is that once cirrosis sets in it is irreversable and often accellerates even if the person stops drinking. This is why many problem drinkers end up needing a liver transplant. Hopefully Harrison is not that far gone but the way he has been hammering himself I can quite believe that a doctor may have told him that he could be dead in a few years time. Remember Benny Lynch was only 32 when he died, lets hope Scott can avoid such a tragic fate even if he doesnt manage to salvage his boxing career...

Well thats obviously the worry, what happens if he realises that he hasnt got it in the ring anymore?.... I think he'll have a hard time getting back to being the fighter he used to be.... not that its impossible though.
The main thing though is that he has to be honest with himself about what his problems are, thats the only way he has a chance of overcoming them...
