Wayne Alexander has suffered what could prove to be a fatal blow in his boxing comeback after breaking his ankle in training.
But the former WBU light-middleweight champion has insisted: "I'll be back."
Alexander was forced to spend four nights in Mayday Hospital recovering from an operation after falling awkwardly on his ankle when attempting to jump over a gate while running last Monday.
Surgeons were forced to insert two pins and a metal plate into his leg, meaning the 34-year-old will not be able to do any physical work for at least two months leaving Alexander's career in the balance.

My cousin once jumped out of a bird's bedroom window (first floor) and landed square on his bare feet on concrete, breaking his ankles "like eggs" (according to the doctor).Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Blimey, it's hard to break your ankle, such is the protection down there. Jumped off a bus once, caught the kirb edge and my foot bent under - Didnt know for a moment whether I was going to pass out or throw up - Fortunately it happened in the city centre and help was at hand - Basically instead of having a night out I spent 7 hours in A and E - Wasnt broken but the pain was awful and it took a fortnight to heal well enough to walk normally - A break must be on a far higher level and Im glad it wasnt worse than it was.

I had about six months out but boxed again after.
I suppose injuries heal quicker when you are a kid. It will be tough for Wayne but I hope he makes it. Good luck

Remember a guy at my secondary school, who used to always wear steel toecap DM's.
He got his feet run over by a cement mixer one day, which managed to crush the toe caps, mullering his toes, he howled in pain and fell backwards, smashing his head on the floor, and also broke both his ankles as his feet were still trapped unnder the wheel.

People ,wayne was in hospital for two nigts not four and only had one pin inserted,i really dont think his career is in tattters over this, its a set back but thats all.
Wayne asked me to let you all know hes grateful for the good wishes you sent him and that he WILL be back, he was down to 11 stone 10 before the injury and has completely rededicated himself to the game.

LG.Wayne you have been an undefeated champion at Southern Area, British, European and WBU levels yet you are perceived as an underachiever why do you think this is?
WA. I know why that is ,and being totally honest I blew it by not being dedicated or committed enough to make the next step, I have always been motivated to win titles but when I win them it’s a bit of an anti climax, the bottom line is that once ive won titles ive lost focus, im lazy and don’t live the life I should, ive never lost a title in the ring but have been stripped or relinquished them all which is really sad.
LG. talking about not living the life rumours have circulated the sport for years that you’re a bad liver and lazy, are these true?
WA. Yes they are, all true, I always had the belief that I had the ability to win no matter what happened outside the ring, and maybe I believed my own hype ,on the way up people kept telling me how good I was and that I could knock out everyone and I brought into it, being straight im 34 years old and ive been lazy and have not led the life I should, I thought I could work hard and play hard and get away with it ,but ive been proved wrong big time on several occasions.
LG. Your career has been dogged by spells of inactivity why has this been?
WA Same old story not living the life, I cant blame anyone but me for the lack of fights ive had, Frank (Warren) must be pulling his hair out, I wasn’t in the gym enough ,until recently I still didn’t really tick over and when the calls came in I was so out of condition I wouldn’t have been ready for the fights I was offered, then instead of getting down to serious training again would do nothing and go on the same viscous circle using every excuse there was other then being man enough to admit its my fault.
LG. Was it the same when you were offered a part on the contender earlier this year, in what would have been a great way back for you after your defeat to Vigne.?
WA.yep ,I was given eight weeks notice for the fight ,done nothing but grumble about this and that, without seeing what a great opportunity it was for three weeks, I started training and realised again its to late and I wont be ready ,I hadn’t sparred for nearly four months and left it to late.
LG. You have changed trainers from Jimmy Tibbs to John Breen why was that and who’s training you at the moment?
WA. I loved working with Jimmy he’s one of the best there is, but it reached a stage where I lost to Mellis, and got dropped by Howard Clarke (before stopping him )that I needed a change, maybe it was the easy thing to do putting bad performances down to being stale but in truth the whole London scene around me was to distracting , I met with Frank(Warren) and he suggested John Breen ,I jumped at the chance and things went well, but being away from my daughter was so hard and started getting on top of me, im in talks with a well respected coach on the mainland who I would love to work with at the moment and hope to have some good news soon.

LG.Early in your career you were famously labelled chinny by Barry Mcguigan after your enthralling slugfest with Ojay Abrahams, yet in your next fight stood up to power punches from Paul Samuels without flinching how much did this criticism hurt you or affect your confidence ?
WA. Not really I don’t think, Barry’s a true legend and someone I admire greatly, but no one likes being called chinny, and it’s something you can’t do anything about, in the back of my mind im thinking what if I am, what if he’s right, im fucked! , I think my style chin up, no defence (laughs) don’t really help does it, look I know I aint no Jake La Motta but my chin aint that bad, is it ?(laughs), and I let it get to me in the TV interview after I beat (Paul) Samuels.(Wayne kept saying “see Barry I aint chinny”)
LG.That said you have been vulnerable and been hurt against journeymen type opponents Delroy Me;llis,Serge Vigne and Howard Clarke all spring to mind but you have taken harder shots from Samuals,Harry Simon and Takaloo can you explain this?
WA. Yeah it’s a mental thing, when ive fought these tough guys ive managed to get my head right, I know they can bang and get myself mentally ready, I suppose its fear, no disrespect to the others but ive just been to complacent and not trained hard enough for them the way I should have ,ive gone in completely disregaurding their abilitys,which I know is so wrong. When I boxed (Paul) Samuels that was the biggest fight of my life, ever since I started as an amateur id dreamt about being British champion and on that night no one was going to stop me, I could have been hit by Mike Tyson that night and stood up (LAUGHING).
LG. You have never gone beyond three rounds to win a title and you were calling out Oscar de la hoya a few years back what went wrong ?
After I beat Pizzamagillio (for the European title) I was number 5 in the WBC ratings and thought I was the nuts, but I just couldn’t stay focused and went of the rails a bit, people must think im cranky to be so close to the big time and lose focus like I did, but at the time life for me was difficult and I chose to party hard and its those times that people want to know you, and be around you which makes you feel good.
I done some really stupid things during that period and upset some important people to me ,but I can and will put things right to those people I let down.
LG. You have pulled out of fights with Daniel Santos, Steve Roberts, Bradley Pryce, Howard Eastman and Segie Dzenki how much would have taking these fights win or lose have enhanced your career?
WA. I never really pulled out of the Roberts fight I just chose Santos instead, then pulled out of that (laughing) in hindsight I regret not facing any of them because I know deep down there all fights I could have won, The Eastman fight was to be at middleweight and I just looked at it as an easy option because I wouldn’t have to train as hard to get down to the weight, once again being lazy but again the call came and I done nothing and wouldn’t have been ready, its strange but losing really scares me, and id rather pull out then think I was going in to lose. I guess had I done ok in those fights I would be in a much better position financially.
LG what’s your biggest single regret about your career to date?.
WA. Not living the life, as simple as that really, ive not looked after myself properly and taken my ability for granted and have possibility blown the chance to secure my future, but who knows what’s left.
LG On a positive note what plans have you got and how do you see your career ending?
WA. Hopefully I can sit down in the next few weeks with Frank (Warren) and my new team and workout a plan, id like to be fighting for the British or European title in the next six months but well have to wait and see, domestically only (Jamie) Moore and (Bradley) Pryce would concern me but they both seem to be looking upwards and good luck to them both, but if I can secure a title shot im sure I can move on and who knows someone like Cory Spinks would be an good target ,in an ideal world winning and defending a world title is still my dream but at this stage of my life financial security comes before any lasting legacy.
LG.can you achieve these dreams?
WA. Defiantly, look I have never been about tidy neat boxing, im a puncher and I know if I hit any light middle in the world right they will go, whether I get the chance we will see as i said earlier ive never lost a title in the ring and when im right mentally and physically im very, very hard to beat. WA. Not living the life, as simple as that really, ive not looked after myself properly and taken my ability for granted and have possibility blown the chance to secure my future, but who knows what’s left.
LG On a positive note what plans have you got and how do you see your career ending?
WA. Hopefully I can sit down in the next few weeks with Frank (Warren) and my new team and workout a plan, id like to be fighting for the British or European title in the next six months but well have to wait and see, domestically only (Jamie) Moore and (Bradley) Pryce would concern me but they both seem to be looking upwards and good luck to them both, but if I can secure a title shot im sure I can move on and who knows someone like Cory Spinks would be an good target ,in an ideal world winning and defending a world title is still my dream but at this stage of my life financial security comes before any lasting legacy.
LG.can you achieve these dreams?
WA. Defiantly, look I have never been about tidy neat boxing, im a puncher and I know if I hit any light middle in the world right they will go, whether I get the chance we will see as i said earlier ive never lost a title in the ring and when im right mentally and physically im very, very hard to beat. When I lost last November I was in really top shape physically but had my eye on the WBO shot that was lined up for February this year, I went in overconfident and complacent ,really I hadn’t even thought about Vigne, he caught me cold with a shot I didn’t see ,but it still annoys me that the fight was stopped so soon, I went down, I know that !,but got up and was clearing my head when the ref stopped it, the ref is an ex journeyman who should have known better ,when he stopped it my head and eyes were clear and he was only landing on my gloves anyone could see that, that really hurt and depressed me for some time after, but now its only forward not back im looking.
LG.Anything you want to end with?
WA. I do sincerely apologise to those people I have let down, they know who they are and to allegedly, Dean Powell and the rest of the lads at Sports network, its taken me a long time to realise that I cant keep blaming other people for the way my careers gone it down to me, I just hope that I get that last chance to put things right and show people what I can really do.

Wayne Alexander, former undefeated British, European and WBU world champion is one of our sports forgotten men, The dynamite punching Crodyon fighter has been somewhat of an enigma over his twelve year pro career having periods of inactivity that have prevented him from reaching the pinnacle of the sport. Following a shock defeat to Frenchman Serge Vigne last November Wayne’s been missing from the scene I caught up with him recently to see if the man allegedly had called the next Nigel Benn ,really has a future in the game.
LG.Wayne you have been an undefeated champion at Southern Area, British, European and WBU levels yet you are perceived as an underachiever why do you think this is?
WA. I know why that is ,and being totally honest I blew it by not being dedicated or committed enough to make the next step, I have always been motivated to win titles but when I win them it’s a bit of an anti climax, the bottom line is that once ive won titles ive lost focus, im lazy and don’t live the life I should, ive never lost a title in the ring but have been stripped or relinquished them all which is really sad.
LG. talking about not living the life rumours have circulated the sport for years that you’re a bad liver and lazy, are these true?
WA. Yes they are, all true, I always had the belief that I had the ability to win no matter what happened outside the ring, and maybe I believed my own hype ,on the way up people kept telling me how good I was and that I could knock out everyone and I brought into it, being straight im 34 years old and ive been lazy and have not led the life I should, I thought I could work hard and play hard and get away with it ,but ive been proved wrong big time on several occasions.
LG. Your career has been dogged by spells of inactivity why has this been?
WA Same old story not living the life, I cant blame anyone but me for the lack of fights ive had, Frank (Warren) must be pulling his hair out, I wasn’t in the gym enough ,until recently I still didn’t really tick over and when the calls came in I was so out of condition I wouldn’t have been ready for the fights I was offered, then instead of getting down to serious training again would do nothing and go on the same viscous circle using every excuse there was other then being man enough to admit its my fault.
LG. Was it the same when you were offered a part on the contender earlier this year, in what would have been a great way back for you after your defeat to Vigne.?
WA.yep ,I was given eight weeks notice for the fight ,done nothing but grumble about this and that, without seeing what a great opportunity it was for three weeks, I started training and realised again its to late and I wont be ready ,I hadn’t sparred for nearly four months and left it to late.
LG. You have changed trainers from Jimmy Tibbs to John Breen why was that and who’s training you at the moment?
WA. I loved working with Jimmy he’s one of the best there is, but it reached a stage where I lost to Mellis, and got dropped by Howard Clarke (before stopping him )that I needed a change, maybe it was the easy thing to do putting bad performances down to being stale but in truth the whole London scene around me was to distracting , I met with Frank(Warren) and he suggested John Breen ,I jumped at the chance and things went well, but being away from my daughter was so hard and started getting on top of me, im in talks with a well respected coach on the mainland who I would love to work with at the moment and hope to have some good news soon.
LG. Any Names?

LG.Early in your career you were famously labelled chinny by Barry Mcguigan after your enthralling slugfest with Ojay Abrahams, yet in your next fight stood up to power punches from Paul Samuels without flinching how much did this criticism hurt you or affect your confidence ?
WA. Not really I don’t think, Barry’s a true legend and someone I admire greatly, but no one likes being called chinny, and it’s something you can’t do anything about, in the back of my mind im thinking what if I am, what if he’s right, im fucked! , I think my style chin up, no defence (laughs) don’t really help does it, look I know I aint no Jake La Motta but my chin aint that bad, is it ?(laughs), and I let it get to me in the TV interview after I beat (Paul) Samuels.(Wayne kept saying “see Barry I aint chinny”)
LG.That said you have been vulnerable and been hurt against journeymen type opponents Delroy Me;llis,Serge Vigne and Howard Clarke all spring to mind but you have taken harder shots from Samuals,Harry Simon and Takaloo can you explain this?
WA. Yeah it’s a mental thing, when ive fought these tough guys ive managed to get my head right, I know they can bang and get myself mentally ready, I suppose its fear, no disrespect to the others but ive just been to complacent and not trained hard enough for them the way I should have ,ive gone in completely disregaurding their abilitys,which I know is so wrong. When I boxed (Paul) Samuels that was the biggest fight of my life, ever since I started as an amateur id dreamt about being British champion and on that night no one was going to stop me, I could have been hit by Mike Tyson that night and stood up (LAUGHING).
LG. You have never gone beyond three rounds to win a title and you were calling out Oscar de la hoya a few years back what went wrong ?
After I beat Pizzamagillio (for the European title) I was number 5 in the WBC ratings and thought I was the nuts, but I just couldn’t stay focused and went of the rails a bit, people must think im cranky to be so close to the big time and lose focus like I did, but at the time life for me was difficult and I chose to party hard and its those times that people want to know you, and be around you which makes you feel good.
I done some really stupid things during that period and upset some important people to me ,but I can and will put things right to those people I let down.
LG. You have pulled out of fights with Daniel Santos, Steve Roberts, Bradley Pryce, Howard Eastman and Segie Dzenki how much would have taking these fights win or lose have enhanced your career?
WA. I never really pulled out of the Roberts fight I just chose Santos instead, then pulled out of that (laughing) in hindsight I regret not facing any of them because I know deep down there all fights I could have won, The Eastman fight was to be at middleweight and I just looked at it as an easy option because I wouldn’t have to train as hard to get down to the weight, once again being lazy but again the call came and I done nothing and wouldn’t have been ready, its strange but losing really scares me, and id rather pull out then think I was going in to lose. I guess had I done ok in those fights I would be in a much better position financially.
