Strange scoring
Strange scoring
Whats the strangest scoring of a boxin bout youve ever come across?
I don't think the scoring of Reid-Ottke was particularly dodgy to be honest it was the referee that caused the problems that night. I was saddened to see Penalosa so widely outpointed by Ponce De Leon. It confirmed my fear that the American judges really are looking for the mindless come forward aggression sometimes as the art of Boxing and moving becomes more and more stigmatised.
Final score wasn't dodgy, but HOW they came to the final totals was. Apparently, Ottke was awarded all (or most) of the early rounds, Reid the latter.steve689 wrote:I don't think the scoring of Reid-Ottke was particularly dodgy to be honest it was the referee that caused the problems that night. I think EVERYONE I have spoken too had it the other way round.
Some "controvesial" cards that I had no problems with - Leonard vs Hearns II, Mayweather vs Castillo 1, Barrera vs Morales II.
I was just about to mention that Stu. It really did seem as if the judges had the winner decided beforehand, then tried to make it look a bit more even in Reid-Ottke.
The one I still can't understand is Damean Kelly vs. Simone Maludrottu (First fight). How the hell one judge had it 118-111 to Maludrottu amazes me. I think any win for the Italian would have been a wrong call, but that margin simply staggered me.

I had reid up by 1 even with the point deducted however that was assuming a lot of even rounds went to Ottke and Reid should have won 1 or 2 of those.stujones wrote:Final score wasn't dodgy, but HOW they came to the final totals was. That fight is one of the clear examples of what I think is a fix in boxing, and I can't think of many more. Ottke did absolutely nothing but run for the first 5 rounds, and Reid although hardly prolific, clearly won those rounds hands down. Yet after six, he was WAY behind on all cards.josh fg wrote:I had reid up by 1 even with the point deducted however that was assuming a lot of even rounds went to Ottke and Reid should have won 1 or 2 of those.stujones wrote:Final score wasn't dodgy, but HOW they came to the final totals was. After being warned repeatedly, including one warning for simply landing a left hook on Ottke, and then not being credited with a clear knockdown, Reid's trainer Brian Hughes, apparetly warned him he was going to get disqualified and urged him to be cautious.
Reid did little over the latter half of the fight, I'm guessing he was trying to find one shot to knock Ottke out, because he knew he wouldn't get a decision, but didn't want to get disqualified by the blatantly paid for referee.
Bizzarely, the judges then proceeded to give Reid something like 4 of the last 6 rounds, clearly, they were trying to even the scoring up after having given Ottke a big lead going into the 6th. Blatant corrupt officiating, I can think of no other plausible explanation for it.

Re: Strange scoring
I've never found that one a strange one, i thought it was a fair result, i watched the fight whilst i was in Thailand , and didn't have any commentary on. I thought that Holyfield might even have edged it.Ally-M1 wrote:Lewis vs Holyfield 1rooney wrote:Whats the strangest scoring of a boxin bout youve ever come across?
That one was the worst I've ever seen. I couldn't believe it when the ref warned Reid for hitting Ottke. Reid had 2 opponents in there that night and it was the ref who was doing him more harm.jamesmcdonnell wrote:That fight is one of the clear examples of what I think is a fix in boxing, and I can't think of many more. What about Calagze vs. Reid, never saw it but remember controversy surrounding the scoring. Was it bad?
Saw a small hall fight involving Danny Goode vs. Terry Adams, Goode won this 77-75 but had a 10-7 round so already he was 3 rounds down and he didn't do anything to win the fight.
Old Bones Ian also saw this fight and was dismade by the scoring.

Another one i found strange was the first Jeff Fenech v Azumah Nelson , it looked like Fenech had outworked Nelson . And after the fight ended Nelson hardly raised a hand, but he managed to scrape a draw thanks to judge Miguel Donate who had it 116-112 to Nelson, how he managed to only score 4 rounds to Fenech was amazing.
Henry Wharton getting the nod over Fidel Castro Smith /Slugger O'Toole in 1992.
It was the proverbial hometown decision as it was fought at Elland Road in front of a frenzied Leeds crowd.
Smith absolutely boxed his head off. If Smith had been the star, and Wharton the opponent, I think it would have been almost a shut-out.

Good call, that was an awful decision. I think it took alot out of Fidal, as he never quite looked the same after that.Abbo wrote:Henry Wharton getting the nod over Fidel Castro Smith /Slugger O'Toole in 1992.

For me it's the worst decision I've ever seen .steve689 wrote:Good call on Maludrottu-Kelly....disgraceful decision but the scoring![]()

Can a bad decision be made worse by ridiculously wide scoring? I think so.
118-110 , 117-111 and 116-112(if you give every round that Kelly didn't clearly dominate to Maludrottu) in Kelly's favour are the only acceptable scores for that fight imo . Well I suppose you could of given those 2 rounds I gave to Maluddrottu to Kelly so 119-109 and 120-108 might be acceptable to but 118-111 in favour of Maludrottu was basically a judge scoring a fight corruptly but trying to show everyone he did it too .
I still don't know how those judges didn't get lynched...........that fight was in Belfast after all .
