getting paid?
getting paid?
so, what exactly are the rules for amateur boxing and getting money? i understand you can not get paid for matches like a pro, but is there anything wrong with getting paid by sponsors or even for sparring with pros?
Our elite boxers have trust funds set up for them by USA Boxing and any monies they receive go to the trust fund. I'm pretty sure you can receive monies from sponsors as long as it doesn't go directly to the boxer, but pays for a trip to a tournament, trunks and tank tops, etc. Getting paid for sparring with pros is a total NO-NO! Once you actually get paid for sparring/competing, you are considered a pro.
Nalo - do you have a rule book??????

So the money Elite Athletes get paid, can't be used for personal expenses , like ex. phone bills or car payments. It can only be taken out of the fund for boxing related expenses ? And I think if a pro offers a amatuer to help him get ready for a fight that is fine. Not like the amatuer going to turn pro. In my opinion it's a stupid rule, probally isn't even enforced.
That's right. So the money Elite Athletes get paid, can't be used for personal expenses , like ex. phone bills or car payments. It can only be taken out of the fund for boxing related expenses ?
This does happen and the pro organization works it through USA Boxing, i.e., the trust fund. And I think if a pro offers a amatuer to help him get ready for a fight that is fine.
But that's why the pros give the amateurs the money - so they will turn pro, with whoever is sponsoring them. According to our rules, no boxer can receive pay for competing unless it is in agreement with USAB.Not like the amatuer going to turn pro.
It's not stupid because if you receive money specifically for competing in events, i.e., local shows, tournaments, etc., you would be considered pro. It is enforced to a large degree. Most of the pro managers work with USA Boxing in this area.In my opinion it's a stupid rule, probally isn't even enforced.
This will all change now that AIBA or IBA now, is getting into pro boxing. Pretty soon amateurs will be able to get paid as sparring partners and get sponsorship money. Just wait and see.boxmel wrote:That's right. So the money Elite Athletes get paid, can't be used for personal expenses , like ex. phone bills or car payments. Mel - I think you're wrong about the elite boxers money. It is a training stipend that the boxers can use to pay for everyday living expenses. It is designed to assist boxers so they can train and not have to work as much.
I'm in the process of sending it to you Mel. By the way, I did make some comments about the Worlds.boxmel wrote:Dennis, you are wonderful! Email it to me at [email protected] and I'll see what I can do to post it. Smooch!!!!
