Toney signals his intentions

Post by stujones »

..... By vacanting his hard earned IBF cruiserweight belt. Looks like Toney will be focusing solely on the heavyweight scene.

Mistake? Did Holyfield flatter him? Will the bigger heavyweight that he will face (he's facing one in McCline soon) KO him?

Is this a chance for the likes of Thomspon, Hobson and Maccrinelli to gate crash the world scene?

Should Nelson vacate and challenge for the IBF crown?

Toney will beat Mcline pretty easily IMO in what will probably be a boring fight....

As for Nelson he really needs to think about retiring and should fight once maybe twice more....If one of them fights could be for the vacant IBF title and get him more money then so be it...

I hate Nelsons style but respect him as a pro and want him to earn a last few quid before packing it in.

I think Toney had no choice but to give up on the IBF belt. The mandatory fight is due for January or so. There is no way Toney could go down to 190, fight is mandatory and be ready for McCline at heavyweight afterwards.

Also, I doubt Toney wanted to diet during the holidays. ;)

And how does this thread find itself on "The British scene" ?

I like the way Stu always makes sure he includes a British interest to his non-British threads.

All I know is that McCline has virtually no chance of beating Toney. It'll be a shut out. Did you see that big lump last week on Eurosport struggling with Cedric Boswell? Who showed only average defensive skills at best? Toney is going to have a laugh here. I just hope he remembers to train a bit or else he might enter the ring even heavier than McCline if he's not careful.

Stu - I'd be pretty shocked if Hobson ever "gate crashed the world scene".....

I dislike James Toney's arrogance.

However if he can beat Mccline next year, then i will become one of the believers, there is no doubting that if he can do this, he will be able in my mind, to take on most.

Added to his sheer guts and willingness to fight anyone, he could be real good for the heavy division.

Toney is my favourite fighter of all time - no question. Few warm to his abrasive nature and his seeming inability to control himself at the buffet table, but no one can denign his skill/tenacity.

Toney v McCline will look like something from a circus side show due to the size disparity but I cannot see a heavyweight of McCline's mental frailty beating a motivated Toney.

It's gonna be Lights Out for Big Time come fight night.

Toney is doing what Jones jr should have done.

The fight against Mcline is still risky, Mcline is a giant of a man. Will be an interesting fight imo.

I agree.

Mccline is big and the sheer size of the man will give him a chance against toney.

However as already pointed out, Mcclines mental state could become an issue, espically with Toneys mind games in and out of the ring.

He's great, his arrogance is hilarious, he just rubbishes everyone indiscriminately so it ceases to mean anything.

James Toney is a genuine star and an old fashioned stylist IMO - I have learnt more watching him box than any other fighter.

He is the only challenger for Mayweather's defensive excellence crown.

Anyone who seriously thought he was going to return to weight-making now he doesn't have to, doesn't know James Toney!

McCline is slow, ponderous, meek and simply gets battered for 12 - bet he doesn't land more than 10 clean punches in the whole fight

McCline doesn't have the balls to beat Toney - it'll be quite a sight, even though he's twice his size he'll probably be running from Toney, prancing round the ring like a heavyweight trying to do a Pernell Whitaker.

I thought the IBF cruiser title was now vacant? No way Toney gives up the chance to eat more...

I even read Jirov was looking at a Nelson match - but I hope not, as we don't need to see Johnny going backwards at a 100 miles an hour for 12 rounds.

Toney v Tyson in 2004?

The sad thing is right now Toney or Jones would easily beat Tyson IMO....

Hasn't it occured to anyone that maybe just maybe McCline will not find it quite so intimidating fighting Toney, seeing as he will be towering over him?

McCline also showed balls in his last fight, when he rallied to kick the fornicate out of Boswell in a come from behind win.

TBH I don't think it'll just be a confidence thing - Toney is just so much better.

It appears that we're in the minority, James. Good as Toney is, most people discount the size differential between McCline and Toney and look at McCline's passive style as the key to Toney's victory.

Toney may well outpoint McCline but if Jameel chooses to, he is more than capable of destroying Toney. Defensive skills or not, McCLine could easily punch through Toney's guard and paralyse him with body shots. I noticed against Boswell that he went to the body a lot.

I'd put my money on McCline every time in this match up. McCline is a competent fighter but he's very powerful and if he ever starts believing in himself he could be a genuine contender. Toney, at heavyweight, is little more than a distraction. Albeit a welcome one.

Does anyone know if the contracts have been been signed for this fight yet?

I forgot to add, much as I don't like Toney's overly aggressive style (which may or may not be a front) I admire him greatly and rate him very highly.

He's the closest thing I've seen in real life to Clubber Lang. :D

Toney may well be a short fat heavyweight - but those bodyshots had even intimidated Holyfield by the end of their fight ( as in he was thinking twice about wading in anymore ).

McCline will look like the Hulk in there, but he reminds me of the lion in the Wizard of Oz: He needs a heart.
He might be brave against the Boswells of this world, but the legendary James Toney is something else entirely.

I think Toney will get to him mentaly before the fight even starts. He'll kid him out of it and have Jameel convinced he's nothing more than his sparring partner.

Toney UD or even late stopage.

Well I do try...... As for McCline vs Toney I really can't see the disappointing McCline doing anything to upset the apple cart here. He does nothing special, doesn't hit particularly hard and is what I've labelled a boxing pacifist. I have been very dissapointed in all the fights I have seen of him and expect Toney to hard work him for a confortable (possible shut out) points win.

When I see McCline in action and then Danny I always think Danny has more talent, but I've been so disappointed with him in the past ..... I hope he can rekindle what he had in the mid to late 90's with his old promoter.

Very surprised JT picked Jameel as his next one but he has really turned his career round now. The size difference is gonna cause a few problems but JT will make Jameel come to him eventually and he'll pick his shots. JT and the TUAMAN would be a good un.

Its easy to go balls out when your opponent has ran out of gas.
Before the 9th round, Boswell was sticking that jab right into Mcclines mouth, and Mccline couldn't do a damn thing.
but as time went on, Boswell was almost dead on his feet, even before mccline rushed him.
Had Cedric Boswell done better body work throughout the fight, Mccline wouldn't have had it left in the tank to maul him like he did.

James Toney is going demolish Jameel Mccline.
He will not neglect to kill the body, because you cant if you want to beat a giant.
Thanks for giving us this fight James- You are a breath of fresh air in an era where fighters typically avoid hard fights.
The guy has got big giant stones, and even if he was to lose to a giant, you have to give him the biggest balls award.
