Robin Reid getting hassle from the ref...

Post by bennie »

Already, the ref is doing his best to break up Reid's concentration as I watch the early stages of the fight on the box.

Oh, Christ, the ref is a Belgian. We all remember what happened the last time a Belgian ref was involved in a 'world' title fight involving one of our lads (Brodie-Chi).

The ref is discraceful.

I fought 82 times as an amatuer and the worst ref I ever had IMO was Ken Curtis. He was always interfering.

But Ken Curtis makes this ref look like Arthur Mercante Sr.

I really sympathise with Robin Reid

No wonder Warren wont let Joe go over there. I cant blame him. You give them krauts a four round start.

At the start of 10 I have Reid 6 to 3 up.

By the way Its 12.45 and im a bit pissed now. I was meant to be out for dinner tonight with er indoors and another couple, but i managed to agree to get em to come round for dinner early. We finished in time for the first bell of Hatton Tackie. The couple talked about Hamed and Bruno all night, theyve now fucked off and the wife has gone to bed, and left me up to watch alone.

Interesting post. You're right. People don't forget a bad ref, and this guy is bad. The sad thing is, even with a good ref, Reid isn't going to get the verdict.

Agreed the ref is a complete and utter joke, mind you so was Mickey Vann in the Hatton fight tonight (although not as obvious). When Hatton does get in with Tsyzu will Vann work his corner seeing as he's unlikely to be appointed unless it's a WBU defence.

I dont mind you asking at all.

But no I didnt box for Earlsfield, but I boxed against a few of their fighters in the SW Divs at Battersea Town Hall.

I boxed for Westminster ABC and St Pancras ABC in the 1980's and very early 1990's.

Names that come to mind who I fought (over a numbr of years and weights) were Paul Hersey of Battersea, Peter Wilson of Kidbrook ( who gave Howard Eastman some very tough fights) Neil Dickinson of Kingston and Conn McMullen of Acton (who gave Wayne McCulloch a good fight as a pro)

I know a kid now (a friend of my 19 yo brother) called Patrick Carty who now boxes for Earlsfield.

Thanks for asking, what made you ask?

You mentioned you boxed in the SW Divs in the early 90's alongside Howard Eastman and I was quite intrigued. The ABA's will always have a touch of magic about them.

When I fought in the Divs alongside Howard I think he was at Light Middle ana I was at Lightweight.

Later on I moved up (basically I was a bit fat) and fought Peter Wilson at Light Middle (Peter had fought (nad I think beat Howard a few years earlier in the divs)

I saw Peter Wilson fight three wars in one night to win the divs.

He would have made a very entertaining pro, but I dont know what happened to him.

You mention mgic Ben, what I loved was the cameraderie between the boxers going round the club shows.

I watched Dickinson in the 1987 ABA's. He was one of the tallest bantamweights in the world and got to the All-England finals at Gloucester, where he lost to John Sillitoe. Sillitoe won the ABA title that year.

I remember Neil as a tall long tattooed, blond skin head lightweight with good boxing skills.

I was 5'7 and walked around at 12 stone between seasons at light weight.

I had short arms but always did well against Neil (i fought him twice) he was a much better boxer than me but i guess styles make fights.

I think he was trained by Freddie Barr who was a good friend of my coach. Freddie also trained a LHW called Trigger Bantam who was a great character and who I sparred and ran around with regularly.

I think trigger ended up winning the 1991 SE Div LHW title. He was as slipperly as an eel. I remember sitting in a minibus with him on the way to fights and he would sing all the way. He thought he was Marvin Gaye. A more appropraite role model would have been Marvin Hagler.

Great times though, ones I shall always treasure, but i'm a bit pissed now, scratching the grey matter.

Yeah, my twin brother boxed as an amateur and still remembers those days with real fondness. Amateur boxing is a sport, whereas pro boxing is a business. I used to always get to the amateur boxing with Boxing News legend, Brian Pigden, and the fights were fantastic, especially in the divs. Peter Wilson was a great fighter, as you say. He beat Tim Taylor in the 1989 ABA's, but was knackered by the time he got to Gloucester. That was the trouble with the divs. Competition was so fierce, the winners would often be too knackered to progress much further.
If you boxed for St Pancras, you'll know the great Mick Carney, and Mickey Hughes, Jimmy Mac, Rory Callaghan, and all them boys.

Youre right, In the Amateurs you have no frauds, no on the club shows.

Youd all go togethher, help out in the corner, get a trophy or a watch as well if you were in the fight of the night. Have a meal after and drive home. Great Great times, and what I really miss about boxing. Ive never been into football and this is the closest to team spirit i ever experienced.

St Pancras were a sister club of Westminster, where I started, but at St Pancras I was trained by Ron Smith, and sparred regularly with a flyweight called John Hanley.

Steve Hoier was my fairy godfather.

No, your are miles out and you may never guess.

I had over 60 of my fights with Westminster and they lost their premises and the clubs merged.

I'd rather not say who i am on open forum, (not because I'm a name) as i like the anonimity of exhanging views between fellow boxing lovers.

By the way this Garcia who is fighting Sims is no John Mugabi.

He hit him on the break, but protect yourself at all times.

Blimey he' s the WBA Super Welterweight Champ.

My idol boxed seemingly years to get a title shot at LM and by the time he did he was past his prime.

Ive had a few drinks and I hope to stay complis mentis for Hopkins Joppy, but do you think Mugabi at 154 would ever had any trouble with Simms or Garcia?

"The Beast" would have destroyed them both on the same night. You're right, he was past his prime when he got a light-middle shot.
Remember that fight with Hagler like it were yesterday. Mugabi softened Hagler up for Ray Leonard.
