Joe Murray Qualifies for Beijing Olympics.

Manchesters Joe Murray has just beat Bruno Julie on pts 26-19 and booked his place in the quarter finals and a place in the Olympics next Year.
20 year old Joe younger Brother of Professional Lightweight John Murray Now meets Chinas Gu Yu for a place in the Semis and a chance to pick up a medal.

Bradley Saunders and Frankie Gavin qualified last night....

I'd love to dig up the thread where a few BALLOONS were spoutin off, thinking they know it all, saying no one would qualify or medal from this tournament.

3 is not bad at all. I also think more will qualify from Italy and Greece(i think that's where the last QF is)

Yeah excellent effort by the lads, will inspire the ones who failed to qualify.
I think this goes a long way to justifying the money invested in the boxing team. Sponsorship does work if the money is invested correctly , and the boxers themselves have to get the results to keep the sponsorship.

Makes the Olympics look a whole lot better now.

I went to the Sydney games, and the atmosphere was amazing.

Also it wasn't long ago that no British fighter had medalled in the world championships

I think this is the 1st qualifying tournament.

The others should be easier as the people who have already qualified might not bother going

Hopefully we will get more again then.

Qualifying thru the World Champs is prob the hardest route

Hey all, I'm here in Chicago and can give you some reports on your lads, although I didn't take notes so I don't have a lot of details.

I wasn't terribly impressed with Murray - Julie looked more like a boxer, with a stalking, high guard. Murray went backwards and tried to counter - he got an early lead and was able to stay just ahead of Julie for the rest of the fight. Julie was quite mad about the decision, but it was one of those typical amateur decisions, where the guy that is pushing the fight thinks he should have won but probably actually didn't score enough to win. I was a little late arriving, so I only saw the end of Gu Yu's fight, but he really dominated Rakhimzhanov on points, and I think Murray will have a very hard time getting past him. China was quite impressive all day - I wonder if it will translate to pro boxing successes there or if they will focus on medals.

Saunders beat the American Molina in a slow fight. Both guys wanted to counter and neither would lead. Saunders established a small lead and started successfully countering Molina every time Molina tried to push the action. Finally, in the fourth, Molina broke through a little and got an eight-count on Saunders, but really couldn't get the score any closer. Saunders fights Alexis Vastine next - Vastine started out great and was racking up the points on a Moldovan. He's tall and rangy - but he got careless and tired in the late going, and got stung and looked very unsure of himself for the last round. Still, I think he will present a technical challenge for Saunders, who I think will have to get an early lead again to advance. Should be a good fight.

Simmons had one of the most entertaining fights. He was outpointing Gajovic in front of a lot of cheering Montenegrins, but Gajovic started loading up big punches and absolutely rocked him. Simmons was trying to survive, but the Montenegrin kept chasing him down and belting him, and when the ref stopped it, he had just had his third standing eight of the round.

It was also a bad night for Ireland, as Sutherland and Sweeney lost. Sutherland looked good but was just outworked by the Venezuelan Blanco, who also beat DeGale. Sweeney never had a chance against the Russian Chakhiev, but he gamely took it the full distance, after it looked like he was going to get blown away in the first round.
