After all that in the past Pundit, do you think Calzaghe wins?

I think Calzaghe will win, but thats not to say Kessler can't have his moments as hes a very good fighter. It seems to me when the real danger is in front of Calzaghe he brings his A Game and at his best he's a great fighter, this is what I think will happen tomorrow night as Kessler will bring the best out of Joe.pundit wrote:Head says Calzaghe, heart says Kessler. The Hawk wrote:jamesmcdonnell wrote: Fcku me! Okay I can understand that there might have been frustration in some quarters that Calzaghe's list of opponents for the most part have not been up to scratch. Even his staunchest fan would find it difficult to argue otherwise.pundit wrote:Calzaghe got stick in large part due to his inadequate opposition, together with his constant bragging and announcements what great things he would do in the future -- and never did. Hence the bile was well deserved.tony3 wrote:Calzaghe all the way partly because I'm British and partly because of the hateful, incessant stream of bile that Joe has to endure from morons world over.
Just by taking this fight -- against his clear, one and only peer at 168 -- Calzaghe has done a lot to silence the critics. Whether he wins or loses.
That said, there have been some good names on his record too and he has proven that when the occasion demands, he is an incredible exponent of the sweet science.
Was it really his fault that matches with Roy Jones (who probably would have beaten him) or B-Hop never came off? At the very worst he can only shoulder half the blame because the camps of both of the above couldn't agree to financial terms when they were at their respective peaks.
Another bone of contention is Calzaghe's susceptibility to injury (particularly his hand and wrists). Again, it can be extremely vexing when a fighter repeatedly pulls out of scheduled contests due to physical woes, but put yourself in their shoes. Boxing is a potentially life-or-death sport and also with such heavy emphasis on a clean record these days, is it any wonder that Joe has opted not to enter the ring in anything less than prime condition?
Admirable? Maybe not.
Understandable though? Youbetchya!
Finally as Eubank has recently been quoted as saying, "don't believe everything you are told". allegedly would have everyone believe that all of his fighters are P4P demi-gods. If people listen to his hype, of course they're going to end up being disappointed! I've followed Calzaghe's career since he stopped Mark Delaney and know full well that he can be terribly inconsistent. In fact is you compare his match with David Starie with the one against Lacy, you could be forgiven for assuming that the pair were facing an entirely different man.
Calzaghe like many other champions operating out of Europe has generally faced a string of upper tier jouneymen, a handful of ex-champions and one or two live prospects.
That doesn't equate to him being a ATG but neither does it make him deserving of the scathing and often malicious criticism he so often receives over the internet and in the press IMHO.
ppl talk about Calzaghe's supposed variety. But if an opponent doesn't come straight at him, there's loads of scuffling, mugging, getting tied up, lunging out of range. Joe's messy style could backfire here. Against a taller man, I think it will be messy. I wonder if the big crowd will fire up Joe too much to the point that he gets overanxious and make mistakes.

I've always been on-and-off with Joe, and I've always liked Kessler, so it's an easy pick.
I've got so cynical that I don't want it to get to the point where Calzaghe comes out with every reason in the book why fights with Pavlik, Taylor & Hopkins refuse to fight him. As such, I would really like him to lose to Kessler...If Joe loses, at least he has no title to protect and his next fight he'll take a risk.

Joe will spank Kessler and render your argument ridiculous. Quote me on it.Autobarn wrote:because Kessler will take on world class opponents most of the time in his subsequent fights, duh...NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:not really understanding all the messages saying it will be better for boxing if Kessler wins.
it sounds like nonsense to me, if Joe's the best man, and I think he will be, whether he's 35 or whatever...in what way is that any worse for boxing than if Kessler wins?
exactly, it's not.
This fight is the one I have been waiting for - Calzaghe to be in a real fight.
Also stated for 2 nearly 3 years Kessler and Froch are the fighters to give Calzaghe all he can handle.
I cannot stand Calzaghe but thats because of one reason which of course is his promoter - in addition the endless list of what I can only say are unsatisfactory opponents - his best win and yes flawless performance was against Lacy that way way and way over hyped American -
Now Calzaghe is in a real fight - the night has finally arrived and strangly I want him to win - yep I want him to beat the opponent I have said all along is capable of beating him.
It would be fantastic for British Boxing if Calzaghe wins - absolutely fantastic - with the lads doing well in the amateurs - then we have Hatton, Witter, Woods, Maccarinelli - we possibly have David Haye winning a world title - on top of that we have got Wayne Elcock and Jamie Moore in big fights.
For the sake of British boxing I want to see Calzaghe win.
Mind you wouldn't be saying the same thing if he was fighting Clinton Woods or Carl Froch.
British Boxing needs the momentum and big lift to

I can't believe how nervous I'm getting the closer the fight approaches. Autobarn's been putting forward such a strong, coherent case for Kessler over the past week that he's had me swaying on a number of occasions, and Kessler also looked really 'up for it' at the weigh-in.
I really want Joe to pull through here with a career-best performance, but the closer it gets, the more I fear that this could be the wrong fight at the wrong time. God, I so, so hope that I'm wrong :(

I thought exactly the same thing - but the rumours of the Kessler hand injuries have been circulating for a long time - it is that and that alone which has caused me to have some doubts.Deserter wrote:Kessler also looked really 'up for it' at the weigh-in
I(
However - When I put this to someone I respect highly as a journalist - he said "Kessler is not just turning up for the money - he could get the money he is getting for this fight in some soft defences in Denmark - he is taking on Calzaghe because he is convinced he can beat him - why take him on other wise??
Out of the massive fights involving Calzaghe and Hatton - I want both of them to win for the sake of British boxing - but in my opinion Calzaghe is a real favourite to win - whilst Hatton although it would be an amazing win - I just cannot see it for the life of me -
I think Calzaghe stops Kessler and Mayweather stops Hatton.
there's a load of doubters for Joe on this forum. I am not one of them. Also I don't buy a lot of the arguments about Joe avoiding name fighters.
Throughout Joe's career there have been champions at his weight from both America and Germany to name two countries. Boxers who are renowned for not wanting to stray from their own shores. Why should Joe be any different.
Why go and be a sucker and get robbed in some country where dodgy decision or CHEATING in other words seems an inherent characteristic of the sport.
fornicate 'em I say, Joe could and would spank 'em all, if they won't risk coming to his house he shouldn't go running to them while he is making good money.
