Great fighters who stayed too long

There are some big names that stayed too long and sorta make you feel sorry for them. Gatti comes to mind first. But what about the ones that can't seem to win a big fight anymore, like Judah or DLH? Or the ones that are honestly delusional, like Holyfield?

Floyd Patterson
Muhammed Ali
Tommy Hearns (fought just last year)
Evander Holyfield (only if he keeps going for 3 fights or more).

Evander didnt stay to long because he actually did fight for the world title. Though like you said, he will if he keeps fighting, i think one more fight is to much.

Oscar continues to fight for the same reason Roy Jones does. Basically, those two do not want to go out as losers and be remembered a such. I am convinced that if Oscar would have beat Hopkins or knocked out Mayweather he would have retired on the spot.

Roberto turned out okay and won some titles. Actually he is pretty happy now. Quarry is a great choice. Its sad to see a guy go out like that. My last choice is Sammy Langford though the guy was blind in one eye almost blind in another and no one still wanted to fight him. One of the top ten or fifteen heavyweights of all time and he never one a belt. Now that is scary.

if you watch the fight again though... you will see why alot of people thought Oscer won that fight against Mayweather. It was very close.

Oscer can keep fighting. He really never got beat besides Hopkins.

Joe louis. Watching him being pummeled through the ropes by a youthful Marciano is a terrible, terrible sight.

At least Louis knew after that beating to hang them up, unlike Holyfield.

Chavez also went on fighting way too long, having several comebacks that were just unneccesary.

Holyfield - no other fighter would've been given a title fight after only beating Lou Savarese. He just keeps getting crushed by people that he would've beaten 10 years ago.

Sugar Ray Leonard is another. All time great fighter, and still looks ok and sounds good, but his last couple of fights were just sad.

Why mention DLH? You make it sound like the guy gets killed in his fights or something lol. He's the only fighter to this day to beat Mayweather on one judges score card. Doesn't sound too washed up to me.

This is stupid. Mosley and Mayweather clearly won against De la Hoya. They were 116-112 type decisions.

...ezzard charles' case is so sad. totally broke. fought way too long before he retired the first time, and then came back to fight some more. one of the saddest fights in boxing history was this former heavyweight champion and all-time great light heavyweight fighting a Dave Ashley in a ring in a high school gymnasium in a small community in Cincinnati.

Fought when he knew he was through. Money gone. Details too sad for me to continue writing about here.

Bobby Chacon.
"Schoolboy" had a hard time leaving the game .
He hung in there on heart but win or lose was taking big shots in every fight as his career wore on.
It cost him dearly in his personal life.
And now he is in real bad shape physicaly.

That's the best answer. The vast majority of great fighters fight too long. Many fight way too long.
