Matthew Thirlwall, wasted talent?
When Meaty Mick launched the 'class of 2002' there were Two main prospects, Carl Froch and Matthew Thirlwall, these were the guys who were going to make the big impact...
Now we could talk about Carl stagnating but thats for another day, I hope he gets his shot, its been a long time coming..
But Thirlwall, the man hasnt even had a British Title shot, or fought anyone decent, he fights on the next Hennessey bill in another 6 rounder..
I heard a few years ago that he wasnt a dedicated trainer and thought he was a star but there must come a point where Mick throws him in with someone in a 'sink or swim' fight...
Or is he just a wasted talent destined to achieve absolutely nothing?

I remember following the class of 2002 on the bbc but i was never overly impressed with Thirlwall. He always seemed too small for a super middle to me but i still expected him to be at least challenging domestically well before now.
I did love watching Dave Walker though, whats happened to him now? He had 1 bout this year in his comeback and now seems to have disappeared again.

thirlwall will come again to british title level i feel, but not beyond that by any means.
dave walker, in my opinion, cant decide if he is carrying on or not, his last fight was at the seni box oakey spartacus undercard when he was not too inspiring in a 6 or 8 round points formality over the catweazle.

He got Juniour Witter a WBC shot which after his carrer had stagnated under warren was a good thing.Coco wrote:He hasn't brought any of his fighters far, certainly not to their potential.
Thirwell looked great in the amateurs but has never impressed me in the pro's.
I don't think he is good enough to win a Southern Area belt
Thirwall just doesn't seem to be that good as a pro.
He might as well got him a southern area title shot for all the money and recognition he has had from it.josh fg wrote:He got Juniour Witter a WBC shot which after his carrer had stagnated under warren was a good thing.Coco wrote:He hasn't brought any of his fighters far, certainly not to their potential.

The reason he got the shot was through his own endeavor not through Hennessy work
He's topping bills and getting exposor in the states via Golden Boy. Certainly getting more than under Warren. I think Hennessy has been instromental in winning a few purse bids to bring fights to the UK (often the Ali Pally)Coco wrote:He might as well got him a southern area title shot for all the money and recognition he has had from it.josh fg wrote:He got Juniour Witter a WBC shot which after his carrer had stagnated under warren was a good thing.Coco wrote:He hasn't brought any of his fighters far, certainly not to their potential.

Are you seriously saying that Witter is getting more work, exposure and money with Hennessy than he would do with Warren??josh fg wrote:He's topping bills and getting exposor in the states via Golden Boy. For a start Witters purses are about 60k

i've seen Thirwell box as amature and pro, he box more like a pro as an amature and a good one at that. He had a brilliant defence but would stand no more than a few inches away from you, he was a very explosive and compact as an amature, if he brought that into the pros it would have been a lot better for him, he's boxing with the wrong style now. its as if most of the Hennessy boys or those trained by McCracken are trying to mimick Froch's style with their lead arm dangling low etc, that style suits Froch but not everyone

You could also argue that he's brought some of his fighters on too quick - John O'Donnell??josh fg wrote:He got Juniour Witter a WBC shot which after his carrer had stagnated under warren was a good thing.Coco wrote:He hasn't brought any of his fighters far, certainly not to their potential.

I'm arguing he hasn't done a good job all round, he hasn't had any real success storiesDirk Kelly wrote:You could also argue that he's brought some of his fighters on too quick - John O'Donnell??josh fg wrote:He got Juniour Witter a WBC shot which after his carrer had stagnated under warren was a good thing.Coco wrote:He hasn't brought any of his fighters far, certainly not to their potential.
