The Best Fighter Of YOUR Lifetime...

Post by Goodnight, Irene »

So we all agree (sorry, Elmer) that Robinson is the best fighter in history. But in your view, who is the best fighter of your lifetime, i.e., seen them fight live (either been at the fight or watched live televised events etc.) for whom you can vouch to the next generation of boxing fans that this fighter in your day was the real deal?

Personally, I can't say I've seen better than Pernell Whitaker. This masterclass Lightweight retired when I was only 17, but that still gave me sufficient time to marvel at what I feel is the most perfect fighter I have seen in my time. I'd also give an honourable mention to a fighter some people have a penchant for criticising & that's Ricardo Lopez. Finito really was that good.

Who's the best in your lifetime?

Chavez ahead of Whitaker? You saw their fight right? It was no draw, surely?

If we could try to keep it pegged down to one or two fighters only as well that would make it a lot more thought-provoking & easier to invoke discussion.

It's simply too easy to rattle off fifteen or twenty names, especially when fighters aren't listed in any order. Attempting to pick out just one above all others (I realise it gets harder the older the poster is, as even at 23 I had a hard time) makes it a more genuine challenge.

I saw the fight and Chavez got an ass whipping. It was a mistake that I put Chavez on top of Whitaker.

The list goes like this:

1. Roberto Duran
2. Muhammad Ali
3. Sugar Ray Leonard
4. Pernell Whitaker
5. Marvin Hagler
6. Julio Cesar Chavez
7. Alexis Arguello
8.Evander Holyfield
9. George Foreman
10. Larry Holmes
11. Salvador Sanchez
12. Thomas Hearns

That is the list that I want it to bring in the first place :TU: :TU: :TU:

Good man :TU:

Only Chavez's most rabid fans insist that fight was a legitimate draw. None will dare to argue Chavez won.

i'm 26 but will discount the greats of the 80s (Hagler,Leonard, Duran et al) because i was too young to remember them (at the time)

So from the 90s / 2000s i'll go with:

Roy Jones
Bernard Hopkins
Floyd Mayweather
Joe Calzaghe
Oscar De La Hoya
Shane Mosely
Marco Antonia Barrera
Lennox Lewis
Felix Trinidad

aaron pryor-julio chavez-meldrick taylor
roberto duran-alexis arguello
salvador sanchez
ricardo lopez

and i know i am missing some more.

In my lifetime it would be Duran or Ali but I didn't really grow up seeing them in their pimes. Of the guys I followed throughout their careers I'd say it would be Whittaker, Chavez or Holyfield.

A Larry Holmes fan!? I thought they were mythical concoctions of the imagination, like Leprechauns, or Minotaurs!

That looks like a pretty good list.
Btw, is "Definitely" Marvin Hagler any relation to "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler"? :D

No Larry Holmes is very real :)

See my favourite era is 30s-90s. Not a big fan of todays guys
and I am wary of "classical" fighters who get so much praise yet, no one see's the footage. Legends in there own times surely.

I appreciate there talent and skills just at times I get annoyed with 'fans' of that era that just hate on anything modern.

Big Holmes fan too but I really caught his career from Witherspoon onwards.

I was trying to come up with guys who I followed from early on in their careers.

My guy was Jose Napoles. The first time I saw him was a fight in Tijuana in the old auditorium. He hadn't even gotten into the ring. He was walking from the dressing room. Something hit me. I knew the guy was special. He was always composed, even later on when his cuts would open up and it looked like he couldn't go on. Hemingway's "grace under pressure" is metaphor for the "Mantequilla" man.
