The Best Fighter Of YOUR Lifetime...

So we all agree (sorry, Elmer) that Robinson is the best fighter in history. But in your view, who is the best fighter of your lifetime, i.e., seen them fight live (either been at the fight or watched live televised events etc.) for whom you can vouch to the next generation of boxing fans that this fighter in your day was the real deal?

Personally, I can't say I've seen better than Pernell Whitaker. This masterclass Lightweight retired when I was only 17, but that still gave me sufficient time to marvel at what I feel is the most perfect fighter I have seen in my time. I'd also give an honourable mention to a fighter some people have a penchant for criticising & that's Ricardo Lopez. Finito really was that good.

If we could try to keep it pegged down to one or two fighters only as well that would make it a lot more thought-provoking & easier to invoke discussion.

It's simply too easy to rattle off fifteen or twenty names, especially when fighters aren't listed in any order. Attempting to pick out just one above all others (I realise it gets harder the older the poster is, as even at 23 I had a hard time) makes it a more genuine challenge.

I saw the fight and Chavez got an ass whipping. It was a mistake that I put Chavez on top of Whitaker.

Im a Larry Holmes fan so I will say him. BUT there has been a lot of good guys in my life time so far. More so in my child hood years.

In my lifetime it would be Duran or Ali but I didn't really grow up seeing them in their pimes. Of the guys I followed throughout their careers I'd say it would be Whittaker, Chavez or Holyfield.

No Larry Holmes is very real :)

See my favourite era is 30s-90s. Not a big fan of todays guys
and I am wary of "classical" fighters who get so much praise yet, no one see's the footage. Legends in there own times surely.

I appreciate there talent and skills just at times I get annoyed with 'fans' of that era that just hate on anything modern.

My guy was Jose Napoles. The first time I saw him was a fight in Tijuana in the old auditorium. He hadn't even gotten into the ring. He was walking from the dressing room. Something hit me. I knew the guy was special. He was always composed,even later on when his cuts would open up and it looked like he couldn't go on. Hemingway's "grace under pressure" is metaphor for the "Mantequilla" man.
