Joe Louis.....Emanual Steward.....Wierd observation..

Post by abosworth »

I was watching Ali vs. Liston I last night and I was listening to the commentary and could have sworn that I heard Emanual Steward..... It was Joe Louis. I think that the two have very similar voices and even some of the comments that Joe made reminded me of Steward. I'm probably fvcking crazy but has anyone else ever thought this?

Boy, did Ali completely outclass Liston in that fight.......

The copy of that fight I have is retrospect, with a drawling American commentator discussing in no hurry what he knows will happen next.

I'd love to know what Joe Louis has to say during the telecast, Abosworth. We know he was in Clay's camp early on, & we know he developed a dubious friendship with Liston around the same time.

What were Louis' thoughts about what he was seeing in the breakdown?

To answer your question, I never made the connection, but in giving it some thought, I think there is at least a passing resemblance in the way they sound. Not a crazy comparison, IMO.

Louis obviously wasn't the greatest speaker and he seemed a little uncomfortable, but I thought his insights into what was happening in the fight were pretty good. I guess he's sort of comparable to Stewart in that way, but I think Stewart is a little more natural to commentating than Louis was. Louis was also the one to find out from the doctor that Liston hurt his shoulder, so he did a good job there as well.
