Joppy announces his retirement

William Joppy has announced his retirement from boxing after his points beating at the hands of Bernard Hopkins over the weekend.
"I ain't fighting no more," Joppy said, "That's it, man. I had a good career. I was a world champion. I'm not real motivated for it no more."

Wow, bit shocked at that really. He's quite young, but I guess fighters age by difficult fights fought, not years gone by.

Shouldn't that read "Hopkins announces Joppy's retirement for him".

A rare boxing retirement - timely, graceful and with honour.

That's if he stays retired, many dont remember, the lure is too great, he's been a good fighter and an honest guy despite his limitations who has always given 100% in every fight. Three time world champ and only beaten 3 times all by better men, he's had some personal tragedy as well which i feel for him. I must admit that throughout the 12th against Hopkins i was willing him to finish the fight as a warrior and on his feet, the £50,000 will soften the blow of retirement, thats quite a pension!!

He will comeback and not advance much further.

Good news if it's true, his face was in a shocking state by the end as I've said elsewhere. Hopkins was clattering right hands off his head all night long.
Unfortunately it was only 50K dollars he got I think, plus his purse of $ 125K - which ain't a helluva lot.
Glad they're not throwing him straight in with the young lions, because that's the fate awaiting him. He needs a rest at least, because I'm sure he'll be back at some point.

Won't advance much further than being WBA Champion of the world and, before Saturday's fight, the accepted No. 2 in the world at the weight?

Hah yeah it looks a bit like Mosley after his welterweight debut against Wilfredo Rivera, except Sugar Shane had a big smile on his face.

Would have thought Joppy might have moved up and been able to earn a couple of quid in a fight with someone like Calzaghe.

Or even a rematch with Eastman, all worth a few extra pence in the kitty. You're a long time retired....
