Another Haye Thread - Punch Resistance

Post by Lenny »

Sorry about posting another thread regarding David Haye, feel free to lock it if you must, but what do people think of David's claim that his punch resistance is so low due to having to starve himself to make weight?

There are plenty of fighters at the moment (Cotto, Pacman) whose punch resistance is greatly improved with easier weight making, do we think Haye will be one of them?

chin will be better and body healthier for fighting at a higher weight, but there will be bigger punchers, so who knows?

Yep, going from cruiser to heavy means fighting guys who are typically 20 to 60lb heavier (or more!) than you're accustomed, it's not like the half or quarter stone difference between other divisions.

But do we buy the fact that all this extra weight makes them better punchers? Are Tua, Rahman, Williams etc better punchers at 250+ than they are weighing between 215-225?

I don't think it's the extra weight that makes these guys better punchers, it's the fact that if Haye is really draining himself to make the weight he'll be weaker all round, which would also affect his punching power. I wouldn't think that a guy weighing 220 lbs could hit significantly harder by simply moving to 250 lbs.

It could well be that weightmaking effects Hayes punch resistence, the knockdowns i've seen him have all seem to effect his legs more than his head, he seems to keep a pretty clear head . In his stoppage by Thompson he was never out of it , just got worn down.

Yes J, it will be good to watch how he goes.
With heavyweights your only a punch away from disaster, just look at Audley.
