Here it is, Hopkins wants 60-40

Post by Autobarn »

Warren says Joe's the draw.

Hopkins says he wants 60-40, anything less unacceptable (Hopkins told this to a UK newspaper; there's a piece up on BS titled 'Hopkins respects Hatton more than Calzaghe').

Who will give ground on this one, if at all?

The first stumbling block in negotiations.

I can't see B-Hop giving ground. Hopkins-calzaghe will be @ LHW if it happens & B-hop is the linear champ at the weight, so I guess you cannot argue with him saying he wants parity.

Calzaghe is a draw, but with the fight being in USA, he won't be the draw like he is in the UK. Then again, B-Hop isn't exactly top-draw either.

For me, this is make or break time now. Negotiations need to be sorted out soon or there's no fight. Then we'll have to listen that the other guy didn't want the fight.

It may be a case of Joe having to accept the smaller percentage for the fight to happen. However, I completely understand it's all about making as much money as possible for Joe at this stage of his career. Calzaghe derserves some big paydays.

I hope he gets the big paydays!

Calzaghe should take the 40% if it's going to be a deal breaker. He needs to get Hopkins in the ring next. I don't see who else is around who will enhance his position as much as beating Hopkins would. Please nobody say Froch he has very little to gain in the big scheme of things from taking and winning that fight.

depends on how much or how little he wants to give Hopkins a big payday and does it really matter anyway when they're both multi-millionaires.

Joe could go over there, spank the Yank, pocket a cool million or whatever, have a few days of lovely sun with missus.......without overly troubling himself.

Or another way of looking at it, is it better to take on Hopkins at 33 or 43......, why the hell not. I'd take the money but hold out for more money and maybe end up getting even money cos Hopkins is just being greedy IMO.
And only evens cos at LH Joe would be boxing without his belts, if it was for the belts I'd want 70% and screw Hopkins if he don't like it.

What other superfight is there for Hopkins anyway.

I read that Joe got £2-£2.5 mill for the Kessler fight. Good money, but surely 40% of the pot available for a fight with BHop would be considerably more? There'd be the PPV revenue which I'm sure would be considerable. The fact that BHop would be getting more would be a crazy reason for turning down his best payday. Anyway, despite his ugly fights, Bernard is still the bigger name at this stage and the champ at 175, so a 60-40 split seems reasonable. If Joe and his team turn it down, that tells me they either don't want the fight or don't really want to fight in the US (and not have full control of the promotion) or maybe a combination of both.

got to be a 50/50 split, and if 60/40 is hopkins opening offer then there is a slight chance of a 50/50 purse and then hopkins taking 60/40 or even 65/35 on the ppv income as most of this will be generated in the states where hopkins is the name.

there you go, ive sorted it, well done promoter rhino.

Erdei is the linear champion at LHW.

Joe should respond with " Bernard who ? "

I have more fun watching my hand battle my junk...than watching Hopkins grapple his opponents

Joe should fight Erdei in Germany for a nice payday.

That sounds reasonable, Rhino and I think BHop should get a little more, though the PPV customers would probably be paying to see Joe rather than Bernard, based on their recent performances.

What happens if Tito DESTROYS Jones. I don't think it will happen, but there might be some appeal if Tito does a massive number.

Hopkins is a right twat when it comes to negotiations.

When was the last time Hopkins drew a crowd of 50,000?

They should tell it's either 50-50 or they go find someone else to fight. It's a big fight, but not because of Hopkins, who is a terrible bore to watch.

Should be 50/50 particularly if Joe is going to the US

Whatever we think of Hopkins and whatever he might get out of it, Joe should take it if the money's good which it would be. Joe's not had many huge fights, so he's not many huge paydays. Wasn't the re-match with Veit in Germany his biggest to date at the time? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that only in the region of £700k? I think he's only recently become a 7-figure (in £) fighter. I'm sure he's not short of a few bob, but his divorce reportedly cost him several mill., he's only got a few fights left and it's time to feather his nest. If he's offered, say, £3 mill+, he should take it and not give an eff what Hopkins is making. I can't see any other fight making him more, not even the Jones-Trinidad winner. Any fight outside the US would probably not bring any US PPV money.

Its a big fight cause HOPKINS is the #1 Light Heavy in the world.

So Dawson vs Calzaghe, Calzaghe vs Woods, Calzaghe vs Erdei would draw more money/ratings?

Agreed, 40% of a Hopkins fight is more than 50-60% of any other potential matchup. He should take 40.

Joe shouldn't make the same mistake as Marquez did when he negotiated himself out of the originally planned Pacquiao rematch.
He should make sure he is getting a much better purse than he could get elsewhere and not be too concerned about Bernard's pay packet.

Mayweather didn't whine about his 35/65 deal with Oscar because he ended up with $20M. Joe should still try to drive a hard bargain but just make sure the fight happens.

Hopkins, though he has achieved a lot, is the most overrated fighter in boxing not to mention one of the most boring.

The public have never warmed to him because of that. I would rather watch Mike Tyson selling out Madison Square Garden masturbating than Hopkins fight.....

just a thought guys, but if calzaghe has been 'ray parloured' and has to pay his ex wife a cut of his FUTURE earnings then he may not want quite such a big purse....

just a thought.

i think it is strange that an unbeaten calzaghe should have to take a lower cut of anybodys purse these days.

Well, let Hopkins go and find himself a big fight at light heavyweight then.
