Chinese heavyweights
I can see from the AIBA website that Chinese boxers captured bronze in both the heavyweight and superheavyweight divisions.
Anything you guys can tell me about these guys? Any pics available? The Chinese have improved so much lately, quite impressive.

ive been trying to find information on these two, mostly Zhang Zhilei, for a long time. I haven't found one shred of information on them other than results. I have found only one picture of each, its hard to see either of their faces though. Looking through the results its evident that Nijiati is a young fighter who just now has come into China number 1 Heavyweight. Zhilei seems to have been China's number 1 for a while, and has shown marked improvement over the years.
Some Past results..
Yushun Nijiati
2005 Junior Asian Bronze Medal (L-Ahror Muralimov 39-23)
Zhang Zhilei
2003 World Championship (L-Grzegorz Kiełsa 22:8 )
2005 World Championship Top 8 (1-1 W-Vugar Alekperov 20:11, L-Olandier Solis 17:7)
2007 Asian Games Silver Medal (L-Rustam Saidov 14:3)
Yushan Nijiati

Zhang Zhilei

They're both tall and pretty ponderous. Zhang especially is massive, easily the biggest fighter I saw (people laughed and gasped when he would come out) but very slow in kind of a Hulk smash way. He knocked out the Australian with a wide, cuffing right hand, but I figured he would lose to Glazkov. Glazkov is pretty decent, nothing special, but has much better skills and faster hands.
Yushan did well, but his competition was not that tough. He beat fighters from Australia, New Zealand, Jordan, and Hungary - and only barely beat the Jordanian.

I have Zhang Zhilei's fight with Odlanier Solis from the 2005 World Championships and he gave him a tough fight losing 17-7. It was close for about two rounds but in the end Solis' greater boxing skills and superior speed made the difference. However I was impressed with the chinese and thought that with some more experience this huge kid has to be world class.
I'm not sure it's the guy in the picture with Sulaiman.

China deserves a lot of credit for doing well in boxing. The average Chinese man stands about 5’ 5" tall or if you prefer 164.8 cm tall.
This is not a heavyweight; however China has 1.3+ Billion people. This is a huge population. Some people are bound to be on the taller end of the spectrum. In the NBA basketball league, there are some tall Chinese players. We should see some tall Chinese fighters. In fact there were.
The two bronze medals for China in the heavyweight, and super heavyweight division were a surprise, but I suspect injuries to other fighters before and during the games, and a favorable draw 91 and 91k+ that did not match them vs the best early on had something to with the results. I would be surprised if the Chinese medal at twice at 91k and 91K+ in the Olympics.

Cheers.scouseheavy wrote:i did see him yes. he wasnt bad, southpaw, low lead hand. not the quickest but seemed to be quite heavy handed. if he wasnt southpaw his opponents would have found it a lot easier so id say his main strength is that! the ukranian, who is about 6'2'' won the fight by outjabbing him.
Should we look more into your nickname(and the fact you were at the worlds in some capacity
It's hard to guess just how big fighters are because you're looking down at an angle. I could only really speculate based on how much bigger they looked than their opponents. Zhang dwarfed Beahan, but I think Beahan is one of the smaller super heavies.
He looks quite a bit taller than Glazkov in photos, although those are hard to use as well because of perspective and body positioning. In turn, Glazkov appears taller than Cammarelle, who is listed as 6'3. David Price is said to be 6'8, and I think Zhang was probably at least as tall as Price, although much much meatier. If I had to guess, I'd say in the range of 6-9 270. As I mentioned, he was the only fighter who caused the crowd to twitter when he came out (some of this may have been partly due to his being Chinese though).
These pictures perhaps better shows his beefiness:

EDIT - If scouseheavy is David Price, than he would certainly know better than me!

yes yiddo, youve gotta speculate to accumulate!! this is david price but im on a friends account- so any other posts by this name i am not responsible for! i was behind the chinaman at the scales and the guy checking said 112 kilos. i dont know what that equates to. but i know that beahan is about 93 kilo. so he must have to eat to make the weight!! glazkov is about the same height- if not a little smaller than camarelle- ive boxed both.

Welcome to the board.
I saw you box in last years ABA final against a lad from my local gym, Tom Dallas.
How is the hand mending?
When will you be back in action mate?
Good luck with the remaining qualifiers
That's a real bummer, David. How in the world did you do that? Are you also active on Warriorboxing.com's amateur forum?yes i did boxmel. fractured my left hand in the last round of my last 16 bout against macedonia
And definitely good luck in the qualifiers. Looks like they are far enough away that your hand should heal and you'll be 100%.

it was the first punch of the last round- a left hook. i was coasting at that point as well. it was very, very disappointing for me because i believed i had a good chance of beating the italian- it would not have been easy, but i fancied the job. it seems to be mending ok and should start using it in about 4 weeks. i am registered on warrior but i dont really contribute to posts on there.
yiddo- tell tom i was askin after him- he was one tough guy, and a nice guy too so wish him luck from me.il probably take part in a round robin format tournament in sheffield in january against kazakhstan, uzbekistan and germany.
as for tyson fury well im in the same boat as yourselves. there was talk of him going the next qualifiers for wales because id be going for england. but because he hasnt boxed internationally as a senior they wanted to send him to a couple of tournaments- one being the test event in china this week- but he pulled out last minute.
