Worst start to a career for a champ.

Charley Phil Rosenberg started out 7-10-3 in his first twenty pro fights.
Later on he became Worlg Bantamweight Champ.
Stiff comp. back then, he certainly didnt get discouraged.
Must be some others with similar starts.
Not all champs have started out with glossy records.

Former IBF bantamweight champ Kelvin Seabrooks was something like 14-12 at one time, before he strung together a few big wins and got a shot at the title.

Ricardo Mayorga was stopped in the third round in his pro debut.

James Bonecrusher Smith was stopped in the fourth in his pro debut against James Broad.

Former IBF Junior Middleweight champ Buster Drayton had like nine losses before he won the title.

..benny leonard got kayoed on his first fight and kayoed twice in the next two years.

sandy saddler got kayoed in his second fight..overmatched against jock leslie. he was never stopped again in his long career.

I actually met him once. Sat beside him at the Anthony Hembrick/Booker T. Word fight at Ft. Bragg, NC. He seemed like a pretty nice. Easy to talk to.

Freddie Pendleton was at one point 7-7-1 and when he challenged Pernell Whitaker for the title he was 23-15-3. He later became champ beating Tracy Spann.

I was going nuts trying to remember this guy's name. i remembered some fighter having about the worst pre-champ record i'd seen and knew it wasn't in the distant past. couldn't come up with it...and even when i thought about him i didn't recall his record being that bad.

After beating guys like Mighty Joe and Super Human Power in Nigeria, Dick Tiger dropped 4 straight debuting in England. He was like 22-9 at one point through his club fights in England before he found his footing.

That's not quite right....what about that time Willie Pep Knocked Saddler out without Saddler even going down or hitting the deck or the ref or the crowd even noticing it?

I guess we shouldn't be surprised that it does not show up in the record books anywhere. That's just how good Willie was.

I think so, but then again he wasn't but 13, or 14 years old at the time!

Same thing with Benny Leonard...I think he was 15 years old when he was first stopped.

British featherweight Steve 'Cinderella Man' Robinson was a journeyman with a 13-9-1 record when he beat John Davison for the WBO title.

Robinson had 48 hours notice and beat Davison to win the title. Then defended it 7 times beating some decent fighters on the way, Colin McMillan, Steve Hodkinson and Duke McKenzie. Lost the title to Hamed.

An amazing story to win the title in the first place, but even more amazing to then prove himself a worthy champion. It was like if Tim Tomashek had somehow beaten Morrison and then gone on to defend it for 2-3 years!

I think Manny Melchor had an appalling run before grabbing the IBF title in the early 90's.
